Sayid

"oh baby I... love you too.." She replied, her fingers running over his hair onto his face. "so much..."

He loved the way she brought her hand to his face, almost pushing him to look at her, not that he didn't want to but she guided him to look directly into her eyes asnd get lost in those blue pools of need and want.

She had time to think of it, to think of that love, and how he'd been the first to ever say it to her and reallly mean it. It was so simple and yet so powerful and it had and still sometimes did frighten and awe her. And it alwasys meade her wonder what had been wrong with her befoore. She looked down at him with slightly pained eyes.

His brow knitted just a little bit as she looked at him.  He'd seen that look before and he knew there were so many things she still had yet to work through, and as usual he would be there to help her through them.

She wondered what had been wrong with her before, why she'd been hurt instead of loved. Why she'd allowed it to be that way as well. And it led her to hurt others too. And thought had occured to her that she didn't deserve his love, or the love of her children and she she knew those were dangerous thoughts, but they were in the back of hermind just the same. She saw him look up at her and smiled, deciding to just for the moment, to forget those awful thoughts.

"It's nothing.." She said,  her hand still on his head. "Dosen't matter.." She smiled, placing her hand over his, the one on her breast. "All that matters.. is this..."

His breathing became a bit more ragged as he felt her nipple slide under his fingers.  He reached down and ran his tongue over it.

Still smiling softly she pulled his lips back to hers and kissed him deeply, letting her tongue move against his and dance there. She moaned softly, feeling his hands on her, his body against hers and knew at that moment just how loved she really was. And it was beautiful.

"and that you love me.." She whispered against his lips, running her fingers through his hair. "that's all that matters.. to me.."

Her kiss was deep and wanting and he loved the way she felt.  Her lips yielded to him and her tongue moved with his. "And to me, my love." He whispered against her kiss.

Sayid ran his hands up her back and into her hair.  His mind wondered to the last time she tasted him and the way his hand moved in her hair, gently pulling it just enough to make her take him further down her throat.  He knew she loved it when he did that. He closed his eyes and let the images of her sucking and licking his hard cock fill his mind.

He felt his cock start to harden again and the need inside him grew even more than the last time they made love.

Suddenly he stopped and pulled away from her.  "Shhh."  He whispered as he quickly slipped off the bed.  He had heard something and looked over at Vincent.  He growled softly as the hair on his back stood on end and his ears perked up.  Vincent knew not to make too much noise as to spoil the element of surprise that Sayid's military training had taught him to count on.

Sayid slid his feet into the shoes he kept just under the edge of the bed.  He turned the combination on the lock box and took out the 9mm he kept locked away from the children.  He quickly pulled his jeans up and his t-shirt over his head.  He grabbed the gun, cocked it and turned to Shannon.  "Stay here."  He said softly, knowing full well that she would not and that she would follow him.

Sayid slowly opened the bedroom door and slipped quietly passed the children's rooms. He scanned each quickly, noting that nothing seemed out of the ordinary as Sarah and Samir slept soundly.  He looked back at Shannon.  She had learned from him how to be an asset to him and most certainly how to handle a gun.  She was almost as good a shot as he was.  He had taught her well and taught her to care for herself just in case the inevitable happened to him and she had to care for the children on her own.

Then he saw them.  Two men in black with ski masks and no marks at all on their clothing.  These were professionals.  He didn't have time to wonder who they were or who had sent them, though he would not have put it passed Ben to do this.  They must have disabled the security system which would mean that they were very well versed in such a state of the art system and that would make them professionals.

Sayid avoided the step that made the creaking sound and looked back at Shannon.  He moved his left hand in a motion to make her step back just a little into the shaddows of the hallway.  If these two saw her, it would be possible that the situation would deteriorate into something he couldn't control.  He couldn't maintain the concentration he knew he had to have if she was attacked.

He stepped quietly up behind one of the men and grabbed him placing the 9mm against his temple.  "Do not move."  But before Sayid could do anything, a man came up behind him and hit him in the back of his head causing him to go down on all fours.  The three men took off, knocking over furniture and turning back to see Sayid up and coming after them.  He fired 3 shots at them, missing twice and grazing one on the back of the shoulder.

Sayid fell hard into the tile near the front door when he felt the bullet drive itself deep into his left chest.  The wound was deep and just close enough to his heart to be dangerous.  He laid on the floor in a pool of blood as he looked up at Shannon.  He reached for her hand and brought it to his lips and kissed it gently.  "Call...call Jack."  He said.  Jack and Sun had been in England for a few weeks while Jack attended a conference and did some consulting at one of the major hospitals in London.  "Call him quickly."  He said.

-------

Libby

The sounds had woke them both and they shot up out of bed.  "What the hell was that?"  John asked as Libby thought for a moment.  He opened the drapes and looked down to see three men running from the house.  "Shit, somebody attacked them."

"Gunshots."  Libby said.  "It was gunshots."

"Let's go." John said, as they both grabbed a gun and ran down the stairs and across to the house.

"Shannon."  Libby called.  "Sayid?" She called.  They came in through the back door and moved through the house toward the front door.

Sayid was almost unconscious as they both looked at Shannon and then at each other.  "I'll call Jack."  Libby said, her hands shaking as she dialed the phone, praying Sayid would live.

occ: not a problem LIsa, i have that happen myself ;)

Shannon

Her kiss was deep and wanting and he loved the way she felt.  Her lips yielded to him and her tongue moved with his. "And to me, my love." He whispered against her kiss.

"mmm hmmm." She swhispered softly against his lips. " I know baby.."

She slid a leg around him and smiled, sensing he was thinking of something rather pleasant by the way he was t ouching and kissing her. "What's on your mind baby?"

He felt his cock start to harden again and the need inside him grew even more than the last time they made love.

"must be... something good.." She whispered, rubbing herself against him a little. "Feels... pretty good.."

Suddenly he stopped and pulled away from her.

"What?' She asked a little confused.

She felt cold dread at the way Vincent was acting. He only acted this way if there was a threat to someone in the family and the first thing she thought of was the kidss. She immediatly sat up, reaching for something to wear.

"The hell I will.." She whispered, grabbing one of his shirts, which was immediatly available and a pair of her sleep shorts, throwing them both on.

She picked up her own gun as well, goddamn if she was going unarmed. She slid in quietly behind him, noting as he did that the children seemed ok. Then she saw movement and flattened herself against the wall between the kids room, Vincent crounching near her feet.

The fear and anger that gripped her also caused her to go a little cold, immediatly in protective mode of her children. There were men in her house and she wanted them out, if any of them made a move in the direction of those rooms, they'd be dead, she fingered own gun nervously.

She shook  her head. "no.." She whispered angirly, but kept hidden just the same.

She ducked in the hallway, looking, making sure the children weren't coming. The shots would surely wake them soon, hell her own ears were ringing. When she turned back it was like slow motion and saw one of them raise their gun and screamed in warning. "Watch out!" And raised her own gun as well, standing up in the hallway.

Sayid fell hard into the tile near the front door when he felt the bullet drive itself deep into his left chest.  The wound was deep and just close enough to his heart to be dangerous.

"No!" She screamed and stepped over him, briefly blinded by rage and fired a cuple of shorts of her own. "Bastard!"  She didn't know whether she hit anything but was nearly knocked over by Vincent roared after them. "Vincent!" She yelled. To no avail and then turned to her husband

She was shaking, so much in a panic. She didn't have her cellphone with him and sure as hell wasn't gonna leave him to get it. She grabbed a cushion cover off one of the chairs and pressed it to his wound, which was pouring blood all over her.

"baby I...I can't.. the phone..." She started. And that's when she heard Sarah at the top of the stairs.

"Mommy?" She asked in a little sleepy voice. "Would noise.."

"Stay up there sweetie.." She called, trying to keep the panic out of her voice. "Watch you brother.."

""But mommy.."

"Listeen to me Sarah dammit just stay up there and watch your boother!" She yelled, feeling the blood soak her shirt and shorts, and not wanting the kids to see it. "Just do it!"

And tha'ts when she heard Libby..

"Shannon."  Libby called.  "Sayid?" She called.  They came in through the back door and moved through the house toward the front door.

"In here!!" She called out in a hollow voice.  "Hurry!"

She looked down at Sayid and started feeling the panic starting to set in now. He was pale and losing a rapid amount of blood. She prayed that Sarah would stay upstairs like she was told. She could also hear Vincent growling and barking outside, probably having chased them to the fence.

Sayid was almost unconscious as they both looked at Shannon and then at each other.  "I'll call Jack."  Libby said, her hands shaking as she dialed the phone, praying Sayid would live.

"Please..." Shannon said, the cushion cover soaked now. She threw it aside. "hurry!.."

She grabbed another one, her red hands staining it already but she didn't care. Nothing mattered except trying to stop his bleeding. She could see him fading out and she got very afraid, shaking his head with her other hand.

"Baby please... stay with me..."  she practiccly begged. "Don't you fucking do this to me..." She patted his face. "Dammit soldier stay awake!"

It seemed to keep him awake if only for a few more minutes. She needed him to stay awake cause the moment he gave in she knew he would die. And all she could think of was if that happened, heaven help those men, cause she'd find them and end their miserable lives, and whoever sent them.

Vincent trotted back in through the open door and sat down, looking miserable and worried. He also had blood around his muzzle and a piece of cloth in his teeth, meaning he'd got a peice of one of them. He whined and dropped the cloth, licking one of Sayids hands.

"Mommy???!!" Sarah called again from the stairs, sounding scared and upset. "Come down... scared..."

Shannon shook her head, trying desperatly to concentrate on stopping the bleeding while they waited for Jack, who was hopefully coming soon. She looked up at John and Libby with pained eyes.

"Can one of... get her... check on the kids...please.." She asked, looking down at her bloody clothes. "I can't.. they can't see this..."

She pushed her hair back, not caring if she got any blood in it. Not caring about being covered in it except for her children seeing it. Unfortunatly it wasn't the first time she'd had someone else's blood on her. And when she had time to think later the fear and horror would set in, but for now, she was trying to be cool, to concentrate on saving him.

"Come on please..." She whispred, keeping pressure down on him, and shaking him every so often to keep him awake. "You stay with me dammit..that's an order.."

Jack and Libby

"Dr. Shepherd."  He answered before he even looking at the phone.

"Jack." Libby began.  "We need you."

"What happened?"  He asked as he grabbed his medical bag and started out the door.  For Libby to call in the middle of the night and say they needed him meant that something bad had happened.

"Sayid's been shot."  She said.  "Somebody broke in, he went after 'em and they shot him."  Jack looked at Sun and mouthed "Sayid" to her.

"I'm on my way."  Jack said closing his phone.  "I'll be back as soon as I can honey."  He said, kissing Sun on the cheek and leaving the house.

Libby hung up the phone and knelt down next to Shannon. "He's on his way."

Sayid's eyes glassed over as he began to drift in and out of consciousness.  He wanted to stay awake but the pain was immense and it was causing him to go in and out.

His face showed the pain he was in and he felt himself beginning to get cold from losing so much blood. "Shannon."  He whispered.

"Baby please... stay with me..."  she practiccly begged. "Don't you fucking do this to me..." She patted his face. "Dammit soldier stay awake!"

He responded to her touching his face and opened his eyes again.  "Remember...the things I...I taught you."  He said softly.  He looked up into her eyes.

It seemed to keep him awake if only for a few more minutes. She needed him to stay awake cause the moment he gave in she knew he would die. And all she could think of was if that happened, heaven help those men, cause she'd find them and end their miserable lives, and whoever sent them.

"This is...is not good." He said.  He knew enough about medicine to know that he'd be in deep trouble if he wasn't rushed into surgery soon.  He was losing too much blood for this to be simply a flesh wound.

Vincent trotted back in through the open door and sat down, looking miserable and worried. He also had blood around his muzzle and a piece of cloth in his teeth, meaning he'd got a peice of one of them. He whined and dropped the cloth, licking one of Sayids hands.

"Good...good boy."  Sayid said weakly.  Vincent looked as though he knew what was happening and knew how serious the situation was.

"Mommy???!!" Sarah called again from the stairs, sounding scared and upset. "Come down... scared..."

Libby looked up at the sound of Sarah's sad little voice.

"I'll check on 'em."  John said. He turned and headed up the stairs.

"Sayid, you have to stay with us."  Libby said.  "Jack's on his way."

Sayid nodded a little.  "Alright."  He looked back into Shannon scared eyes.  "I love you."  He said weakly and felt his eyes start to close again.

Libby looked at Shannon. She wondered where Jack was and what was taking so long.  She met Shannon's eyes at mouthed the words, "this is bad" to her.

------------

John got to the top of the stairs and reached to pick up Sarah.  "It's all right honey."  He said.  "Daddy got hurt but Gramma and Uncle Jack are gonna help Mommy take good care of him."

He reached down and scooped up Samir too.  "He'll be back to playing with y'all in no time."  He said. I hope.

"Y'all get on back to bed now.  Granpa's gonna stay right here with you two."  John said.

------------

Jack walked in through the back door and called for Shannon or Libby.  Libby got up and ran to get Jack.

"He's in the foyer."  She said.

Jack walked in and looked at Shannon pressing on the wound in Sayid's chest.  "I'm gonna fix this Shannon."  He said.  He looked into her devastated eyes.  "I will.  I'll fix it." He began to dress the wound until they could get him to a hospital and into surgery.

"Hey buddy."  Jack said.

"Jack."  Sayid said weakly.

Jack looked at Shannon and Libby.  "I've already called the paramedics."  He said as he dressed the wound.  "They'll be here in a few minutes and we'll take him into London to the hospital there."

Just then the ambulance arrived.  The paramedics came in and loaded Sayid on to the gurney and placed him in the back.  "We're sorry Mum."  The attendant said.  "You must follow us."

"Uhm, Mrs. Jarrah is permitted to travel with her husband."  Jack said.  The attendant looked at him confused.  "Trust me, it's not a good idea to tell her no."

"I'm right behind you."  Libby said.

 Shannon

"Sayid, you have to stay with us."  Libby said.  "Jack's on his way."

Shannon looked up at the door, waiting for the moment when he would come through it.

Sayid nodded a little.  "Alright."  He looked back into Shannon scared eyes.  "I love you."  He said weakly and felt his eyes start to close again.

"Don't you say that like that.." She said in a pnaicked voice. "Don't you dare.."

Libby looked at Shannon. She wondered where Jack was and what was taking so long.  She met Shannon's eyes at mouthed the words, "this is bad" to her.

She nodded, hidign the shaking that wanted to take over. "please stay awake.." She whispered to him, but he was losing the battle. That was clear.

------------

John got to the top of the stairs and reached to pick up Sarah.  "It's all right honey."  He said.  "Daddy got hurt but Gramma and Uncle Jack are gonna help Mommy take good care of him."

Sarah looked at her Grampa, looking scared. "Daddy hurt?" She asked in a tiny voice. Samir toddled up to his big sister, rubbing his little eyes as well.

He reached down and scooped up Samir too.  "He'll be back to playing with y'all in no time."  He said. I hope.

They nodded, they believed their grampa when he told them things. Grampa knew everything.

"Y'all get on back to bed now.  Granpa's gonna stay right here with you two."  John said.

"Ok.." Sarah said, nodding and letting her grampa take her to bed along with her borther. She looked back down the staris and could hear things that scared her, but she held her Grampas hand trustingly and went to her room with him.

------------

Jack walked in through the back door and called for Shannon or Libby.  Libby got up and ran to get Jack.

"He's in the foyer."  She said.

Shannon looked up, her eyes clouded but feeling grateful that he was here now.

"I know.." She softly, looking down to her husband. "I know you'll try.."

"Hey buddy."  Jack said.

"Jack."  Sayid said weakly.

Jack looked at Shannon and Libby.  "I've already called the paramedics."  He said as he dressed the wound.  "They'll be here in a few minutes and we'll take him into London to the hospital there."

She nodded, biting her lip and keeping pressure on the wound.

Just then the ambulance arrived.  The paramedics came in and loaded Sayid on to the gurney and placed him in the back.  "We're sorry Mum."  The attendant said.  "You must follow us."

"Excuse me?" She said, quickly grabbing a jacket, momentarily brought out of her haze by anger. "I'm going with him asshole.."

"Uhm, Mrs. Jarrah is permitted to travel with her husband."  Jack said.  The attendant looked at him confused.  "Trust me, it's not a good idea to tell her no." She climbed in, wrapping the jacket around her with no further word. She was going and they would have had to knock her out to keep her out of that ambulance.

"I'm right behind you."  Libby said.

She smiled weakly and let them close the door. Sitting down next to him to held his hand while they worked, refusing to let go at that point. Her eyes told them it was best not  to tell her to back off. And all she could  think was what if he didn't make it. She tried to push that away, nothing good came from thinking that way.

To  Shannon the ride seemed endless, he looked so bad to her, so pale and weak. When she had to let go of him she held her arms around herself, feeling cold. She wasn't dressed for the night, the jacket she'd put on was longer than the  bloodstained shorts she was wearing, and sandals was all she had available. But her attempts to be warm were just automatci functions by her body. Truth was she really didn't notice. She focused on him, didn't care about herself at that moment.

When they arrived at the hostpital she followed them out, refusing to be brushed asidee, at least until she could go no further. She didn't want to leave him, ws afraise she'd never see him again but knew there was no way she'd be let inside So shee grabbed Jacks arm as he wasabout to go with them.

"Don't you let him die." She said with desperate pain in her eyes. "He just.. can't..please.."

She watched them take him away, wraping her arms around herslf again. She knew those that were there could see how little she was dresssed or that there was blood on  her but like before it didn't matter. She was feeling so strangely detached from it all. Like it wasn't really happening in some way. She stared  at the emergency doors as if she could see through them.

"Don't you die on me.." She said in an angry whisper. "I can't.. do this without you.."  She didn't even notice Libby was there until she felt her arm. "I'm not going anywhere.. I don't want to sit.. not  until I know.."

Medical personnel passed her by and she still stood there. She hated hospitals, they remeinded her of every bad thing that that every happened. She was eerily reminnded of getting there too late to see Boone. Of the doctor telling her and Sabrina that her father had already died on the tabel. Of her mother, gone before the little girl who'd become this woman could even fathom it. These things  made her want to cry but for some reason she refuesed to. Not yet. She just held her arms around herself and stared through the doors.

"I'm staying.. right here.." She repeated again. "i'm not mving.."

Jack checked with the attending physician and then wanted to speak to Shannon before he scrubbed in.  He walked up to her and put his hands on her shoulders. "Shannon, there's nothing more you can do for him."  He said. He knew she wouldn't listen and true to form, she didn't.

"Don't you let him die." She said with desperate pain in her eyes. "He just.. can't..please.."

"Shannon what good is it gonna do for you to sit there in shorts in the freezing cold with blood all over you?"  Libby asked.  "Please, just take a few minutes to get yourself cleaned up.  You know Sayid would want you to."  She said.  "I'll call you if Jack comes back out."

----------

Jack scrubbed in and checked the xrays that had been taken of Sayid.  This was not good at all.  The damage was serious and definitely life threatening. He stood there as the nurses put the gloves on him.

He was able to get the bullet out but the damange had definitely been done.  There was damage to the corotid artery as well as some serious tissue damage which would definitely scar.

Then it happend.  The heart monitor stopped and flatlined. "Defib stat!!"  Jack ordered. The staff moved like wild fire trying to revive Sayid.  Jack massaged his heart pressing in a rhythm on Sayid's chest.  He took the paddles and put them on Sayid's chest.  "Clear!"

Once again he tried and nothing happened.  "Clear!!"  He yelled one more time.

"Dr. Shepherd."  The nurse said.  "He's gone."

"The hell he is."  Jack said, continuing to work on Sayid's chest.  "Dammit Sayid, don't you do this to me!"  Jack exclaimed as he continued to try to bring Sayid back.

"Dr. Shepherd..." She began.

"Don't tell me that.  This man is my best friend and my son's godfather."  Jack said.  "I'm not letting him die."

------------

Libby sat there with Shannon.  She sipped a little water she'd gotten for both of them.  "I wish we'd hear something."

Shannon

"Shannon what good is it gonna do for you to sit there in shorts in the freezing cold with blood all over you?"  Libby asked.

"I'm fine." She said stubbornly, but she was cold it was true.

"Please, just take a few minutes to get yourself cleaned up.  You know Sayid would want you to."  She said.  "I'll call you if Jack comes back out."

She nodded and took the clothes silently. She went to the bathroom nearby and changed out of the ones she was wearing. She took one of the bags under the sink and began to put the bloody ones in it, but was reluctant with the shirt. It was his after all. With his blood on it. She started at it for a moment and sniffed it. Other than blood it smelled like him. The thought that he could die and this could be all that was left struck her and she fought against a wave of dizziness and shortness of breath.

"Breathe dammit." She whispered to herself. "he's not dead yet.."

If she she thought about it too much it might overtake her so she tried not to think on it too hard just yet. She put on the change of clothes and took the bag with her, at least until she knew he would come back to her. And rejoined Libby, still refusing however to sit down.

Libby sat there with Shannon.  She sipped a little water she'd gotten for both of them.  "I wish we'd hear something."

"We'll know when we know." She said, standing against the wall, not looking at Libby. "That's how it goes.." She seemed to think  for a minute. "Mabye it's better that we don't know..."

She felt detached from herself, from the situation, and knew on some level it was simply her defense mechanism. She'd used to use denial and defensiveness but she suppoesed she'd evolved. Detachemnt had been easier, a pretending like it didn't hurt or disturb her, something that she'd prtacticed long before her island life.

"Besides... I don't need Jack to tell me one way or another.." She said quietly, still looking at the swinging doors with her arms crossed. "If was... .dead... I would know...I just... would..."

It was true. The whole time he'd been gone in Iraq she knew he was alive even if her friends had had doubts. It was strange how that seemed to work. It was like she could feel him  someewhere. She'd never had that with anyone else. When her father died, and Boone, she'd had no inkling whatsove, until she was told. And somehow that had been worse. Cause she hadn't been there for eiither. Or for her mother if one really wanted to get techincal. It caused her to rub her arms as if she was cold even though  the sweater Libby had brought her was warm.

"I hate hospitals.." She said bitterly, leaning her head against the wall. "I feally... fucking hate them.."

She fell silent, watching the doors, watching for Jack, hoping that her instincts were right and hadn't played a cruel trick on her. She closed her eyes, keeping her breathing steady. And waited.

"I don't know how it'd be better if we didn't know."  Libby said. She kind of drummed her hands on her thighs and watched the nurses move around.  "You'd think they could just let us know what the progress is."

Libby didn't do patience all that well and tonight was no exception.  She wanted some answers and it killed her that she couldn't provide them for Shannon.

She felt detached from herself, from the situation, and knew on some level it was simply her defense mechanism. She'd used to use denial and defensiveness but she suppoesed she'd evolved. "What do you mean honey?"  Libby asked.

"He's not dead honey."  Libby said.  "Ain't no way Jack's gonna let him die, sweetie."  Libby said, stroking her hair. She hoped he wouldn't anyway. It would kill them all if they lost Sayid.  She knew Shannon couldn't even imagine what life would be like without Sayid and Libby knew the children couldn't deal with it either.

And waited.

Libby sighed deeply.  "I know I do too."  She said.

----------

Jack pounded away several times on Sayid's chest and finally the monitor jumped and his heart found a regular rhythm and gradually the pace built up.  Before long it was beating normally and Jack took a moment to relax and take a deep breath.

"Impressive, Dr. Shepherd."  The nurse said.  "I'm...I."  She stammered

"It's alright Grace."  Jack said with a small smile.  Jack went back and finished the surgery and was able to stitch Sayid up and repair the damage.  It was still touch and go and he would have to be in intensive care for a while, but with a little luck and some expert care from Jack, he would probably be alright.

He finished the stitching and then pulled his mask off.  "Okay, he's ready to go to recovery."  Jack said, backing away and letting the nurses take over.

He walked outside to go find Shannon.  He pulled the bloody surgical apron off and dropped in the soiled laundry basket on his way out.

Jack walked up to Shannon and Libby.  "It was close for a while."  Jack said.  "I almost lost him but he's stable now and his vitals are good."  Jack said.

He hugged Shannon.  "He's gonna be alright."  He said. "I'll stay here at the hospital through the night. He'll be in intensive care for the next few days."

"Thank you Jack."  Libby said, hugging him.  "Thank you so much."

Shannon

Libby sighed deeply.  "I know I do too."  She said.

She nodded and didn't say anytihng. Getting lost in her own thoughtss for the moment. It was taking awhile and her mind seemed to be the safest place even though it was dark in there at the moment. So they stayed there waiting.

It was about an hour or so later when Jack finally came out.

Jack walked up to Shannon and Libby.  "It was close for a while."  Jack said.  "I almost lost him but he's stable now and his vitals are good."  Jack said.

Shannon exhaled a breath she didn't even know she was holding. How close she wondered and decided she didn't really want to know.

He hugged Shannon.  "He's gonna be alright."  He said. "I'll stay here at the hospital through the night. He'll be in intensive care for the next few days."

"Ok.." She said, pulling away from the hug. She didn't really want to be hugged right now but allowed it for a few before pulling away. "Thank yhou Jack."

"Thank you Jack."  Libby said, hugging him.  "Thank you so much."

Shannon was looking toward the doors, itching to go see him, wondering if she could. She needed to see him, to touch so she could let go of all the emotions she'd been penting up since it happened.

"Can I see him?" She asked, holding her arms around herself. "I really need to..please?"

She knew he might not even be awake, and that was fine too. Just seeing him would be enough. She felt wound up and over-tried. Knowing the minute she put her head down next to him she'd probably cry herself to sleep. And that was alright too. It was right now all she wanted to do.She knew John would look after the kids and make sure they knew everything was alright for now.

"And.. I'm not leaving either." She insisted. "I'm planning on sleeping here.. if that's alright too." She smiled just a little. "Just let them try and kick me out.."

"I'd had to be the one to try to stop you."  Jack said with a smile.  "Of course you can."  He answered.

Libby laughed a little to herself.  Everybody in their family, even the people who weren't there, knew it was never a good idea to try to stop Shannon from doing anything.

She knew he might not even be awake, and that was fine too. Just seeing him would be enough. She felt wound up and over-tried. "We usually don't allow anyone to stay in ICU, but i think in this case, we can make an exception."  Jack said.  "I'll make sure there's a sleeper chair in the room for you."

Jack led Shannon toward the ICU area.  "Now don't be too shocked."  Jack said, walking toward the double doors.  "He's hooked up to several monitors and he's catheterized.  He's unconscious but probably can hear you.  We have a breathing tube in him for the moment, but that will probably come out tomorrow."

Jack opened the double doors and led Shannon to ICU room number 4.  He stepped back a little as he let her go in.  Libby stayed back with Jack.  "You said you almost lost him."  She said.

"Yea."  Jack whispered.  "He flatlined and I didn't think he'd come back but he did."

"Of course he did."  Libby said, placing her hand on Jack's arm.  "He loves her and his children to much to leave them."

"You got that right."  Jack said.

Libby felt the tears welling up in her eyes.  "I'm uh, I'm gonna go call John."  She said.  She walked toward the waiting room and reached for the phone on the desk.

------------

John was still holding Samir as he heard the soft chiming of his phone.  He answered it quitely.  "Hi honey."  He said.

"Sayid's alright."  Libby said, sitting down and leaning forward a little bit.  "Jack said it was close but he'll be alright."

"I kinda figured he would be."  John said. "How's Shannon?"

"Worn out and tired, but she'll be alright."  Libby said.  "Honey, I think I'm gonna stay here for a little bit and then I'll come home a little later. We'll probably need to keep the little ones for a while.  I 'magine Shannon'll wanna stay here as much as she can."

"Oh for sure."  John said.  "It's okay honey, you do what you need to do and I'll stay with the kids."

"John?" Libby asked.

"Yea, honey?"  He answered.

"I love you so much."  She said, wondering what she'd do if she ever lost him.  Loss had come way to close to home tonight.

He smiled to himself.  "I love you more."  He said.  Libby hung up the phone and sat back against the back of the chair.  She closed her eyes and let her mind rest for a little while.

Jack left Shannon with Sayid and went to the nurses station to work on some paperwork.  He looked at Shannon and immediately picked up his phone to call Sun.  All he wanted to do was tell her how much he loved her and Tae.

Shannon

"We usually don't allow anyone to stay in ICU, but i think in this case, we can make an exception."  Jack said.  "I'll make sure there's a sleeper chair in the room for you."

"Ok.." She said, walking with him, getting eerily reminded of following the doctor after her fathers death. "thanks.."

She nodded as she followed him, her arms crossed. The hospital made her feel slightly claustrobphobic and she was glad she had her inhaler just in case. "Alright.." She said softly. "I just want to see him.. "

She smiled wanly back at Libby and went in the room, heedles of anything they were saying to eachother out there. When she laid eyes on  him it was a bit upsetting. There were monitors and lines attached him. He seemed almost swallowed by it all. She put her hand over her mouth and tryie to stop herself from crying, at least for the moment.

"Hey baby.." She said softly, reaching down and picking up one of his hands. "I'm here.. don't know if.. you can hear but.. I am..."

Shannon leaned over and kissed his forhead lightly and left her other hand on his forhead, brushing his hair a little with her fingers as she held his other one. He was so pale and quiet, his hand still in hers, but warm. He was warm.He was alive  She sat down in the chair next to the bed without letting go of his hand.

"I'm not going anywwhere.." She whispered softly, lifting his hand kissing it. "I'm staying right here.."

She ran her hands over his hair again and jsut stared at him for awhile, feeling  warm tears run down her face. It wasn't a flood, not yet,  just a soft cry. She kissed his fingers again and just held his hand, closing her eyes. She knew he couldn't supply her any comfort but she could at least give him some, hoping he could at least feel and maybe hear her, even if he couldn't wake up right now.

"I love you so... so much.." She said softlly, wiping her tearss, the room getting a little blurry. "You just.. get better.."

Her mind kept drifting back to the way they were before this had happened. So intimate, touching and kissing, living in the afterglow of their lovemaking. It was the feel of his touch and kiss that made more tears come and of course she didn't try to stop them, just let them come, And laid her head down on his arm, keeping her fingers entwined in his.Thinking if she ever found who did this to him,

The beep of the monitors and his breathing through the respirator were the only background noiise. These rooms were relatvily soundproof. And she sort of dozed uneasily, but never really fell into any kind of reall sleep.  She did do that well when his arms weren't around her.

So she opned her eyes again and looked up, staring at him, watching him sleep. She wondered, what, if anything was going on in his mind right now. If he really even did know she was there. Or if he weas in some nightmare he couldn't get out of. She hoped it was ok in there. She hopeed for a sign, a hand squeeze or something. Knowing he couldn't really wake up just yet. Anything at all.

"Whoever did this to you.." She whispered to him, stroking his hair with her free hand again.. "Better hope I don't find them..cause I swear.. I'll kill them.."
