Touch of Gray - Desmond/Claire

Chapter 1
Comfort in Times of Pain

She sees them all returning from the beach and immediately starts to look for Charlie.  Claire's been so worried about him.  He's not there though and her eyes turn to the only one who can answer her questions of why.  Her head knows what her heart refuses to believe.

Desmond takes a deep breath and walks forward to her.  He's been rehearsing this ever since he began the swim back from the underwater hatch.  Desmond knew he had to be the one to tell her, but he still doesnt know how to do it.  There's no good way to do it, so he just does it.  Desmond looks her in the eyes, pained expressions on both of their faces.  "Claire, he...he didnt make it.  I'm so sorry."  His hand touches her elbow lightly.

Claire holds Aaron tightly to her chest as tears form in her eyes.  Shaking Desmonds hand off, her eyes narrow as her anger builds.  "What happened?"  Desmond doesnt answer straight away and she gets madder.  She knows he was there with Charlie and she can see it in his eyes.  She can tell that he watched Charlie die.  Claire can see his pain as well, but her aching heart won't let her feel it or acknowledge it just yet.  "What happened?" she repeats, her voice growing harsher.

He's hurt when she shakes his hand away.  Desmond's not sure why, but it hurts all the same.  He can see the hurt in her eyes, written on her face and his heart breaks all over again.  Desmond wishes he could take this pain from this poor sweet young mother.  She doesnt deserve this.  Claire's anger is apparent.  He answers her best he can.  Desmond tells her about Charlie's heroism and how he made it possible for them to all be rescued.  He tells her how brave Charlie was and that he insisted on being the one to do it.  Desmond explains that Charlie knows it wasnt Penny's boat and told him so.  He knows this won't ease her pain now, but maybe in time.

Claire listens to what he has to say, but can't digest it all right now.  She pushes away from him as tears fall hard. Locke begins to talk about how they have to hide and protect themselves and Jack says they have to face this head on.  Claire doesn't know what to think, but when Hurley says he's going to honor Charlie's message and go with Locke, Claire follows suit.  She feels it's the right thing to do, for Charlie's sake.

It's time for Desmond to decide what to do, but he just doesn't know.  He wants to honor Charlie, but wonders if Jack isn't right.  Desmond knows there is no black and white answer here, only touches of gray.  He sees the pain in Hurley and Claire's eyes and feels like he owes them, like he owes Charlie, because after all it was him who told Charlie about the last flash and why Charlie had to die.  Desmond decides then and there to go with Locke and to watch out for both Hurley and Claire, he owes them and Charlie at least that, so he steps over next to Locke.

Locke's group begins to trudge through the rain and darkness as they silently head to the homes the Others had once occupied.  Claire is cold and wet and she's holding Aaron so tight trying to keep him form getting sick.  She's still in shock over losing Charlie and having to choose sides.  Nothing seems right anymore, but yet none of it's totally wrong either.  It's all just gray.  Claire takes this time to begin to let her pain seep in, to realize that Charlie is gone.  She walks along silently, brushing off any help.

When they get to a small clearing, Locke says they should camp for the night.  The rain has stopped and the ground here is eerily dry.  The weather patterns in this place are just another of the crazy oddities.  Aaron has gone to sleep in her arms.  Claire sees Desmond lean back against a tree away from everyone.  She needs to talk to him, needs to know more about what happened.  She carries Aaron over to Hurley and asks him to watch the baby.  Hurley is nervous, but agrees, knowing Claire needs some time to herself.

Claire slowly walks over to Desmond.  She speaks softly.  "Why did he do it, Desmond?"  She sees the guilt he carries.  "It was one of your visions, wasn't it?"  Claire starts to grow angry.  "It was your fault...your fault that he died.  If you hadn't told him he would still be here now."  She feels her anger growing out of control as she fights back the tears.  "You've been nothing but trouble since you got here!" she says balling up a fist and hitting him square in the chest.  Claire may say the words, but she doesn't mean them, it's the pain talking.  She needs someone to blame for her loss and Desmond is a convenient target.

Desmond cringes at the feel of her fist against his chest.  Not because it hurts, because it doesn't really, but more because he's taken by surprise.  Desmond should speak up and tell her it's not his fault, that Charlie made his own decision in order to save her and Aaron, but he doesn't want to burden her with the guilt, he'll carry it for both of them.  Desmond feels he deserves it.  Claires fist hits him again in the chest, breaking his train of thought and bringing him back to the pain at hand.

Tears start to flow as she breaks down and truly cries for the loss of Charlie for the first time.  She pounds Desmond's chest as she cries.  "Your fault...its your fault!" she yells over and over again, punctuating each cry with a pound of her fist.  Desmond lets her get it out at first, but then can't bear to see her pain.  He wraps his arms around her and pulls her to his chest, holding her still until she stops moving.  Claire breaks down and sobs as he holds her.  Desmond holds her tight trying to offer whatever comfort he can.  He's so tired that he lets his head rest against hers.

Claire cries until she has no more tears.  But she doesn't move.  She stays in Desmonds arms.  She listens to his sad sigh and knows deep down inside that it's not his fault.  Charlie did what he did for a reason.  The thought crosses her mind that she and Aaron might have been that reason and she sniffles softly.  Claire finds herself wrapping her arms around Desmond in a hug, trying to take some of his pain away.  She knows he's hurting and it's not fair for her to add to his pain.  This feels so right and yet wrong at the same time.  This is the gray that she imagines she'll be living in now.

Desmond feels her hug him back and stiffens for a second, surprised.  But then he relaxes.  This feels right and wrong and somewhere in between all at the same time.  He pulls away and looks down at her.  "Im sorry Claire," he says and means it for so many things.  He takes a crumpled and wet piece of paper out of his pocket and presses it into her hand.  "He wrote this for you, wanted me to give it to you."

Claire shakes her head.  "Don't be sorry.  I was wrong.  It's not your fault."  She takes the note and nods her head in thanks.  She goes back to Hurley and gathers Aaron in her arms.  Claire goes to find a spot to sleep for the night and after Aaron falls asleep and the campfire begins to die out, she reads the note Charlie left her.  Tears fall all over again.  Claire lays down next to Aaron and closes her eyes.  She can still feel Desmond's arms around her, comforting her, as she drifts off to sleep.

Desmond keeps to himself and beds down for the night.  His eyes never leave Claire.  He watches her from a distance and strangely when she cries, his arms seem to ache.  He wants to hold her again and comfort her.  He shakes the thought from his head and lays down on the dry ground, but he can't get the smell of her hair out of his mind as he goes to sleep.

Lyndi that was wonderful. I love the depths of emotions you use for Desmond and Claires feelings on how they are both handling Charlies death. I agree with Lisa that they should have done something like this on the show. Letter, Claire mourning his death, Desmond giving Claire the news--That all should have been part of the Lost plot line, they are a bunch of jerkoffs for ignoring all of this :p.

Im glad you gave Charlies death the respect it deserved in your fan fict. :)

Chapter 2 Danger Awaits

Morning comes and Claire wakes up to the sound of Aarons cries.  She feeds him and holds him close, her mind still numb from the pain of Charlie's death.  She waits for the others to wake up and continue their trek to the Other's village.  Across the smoking, smoldering campfire, Desmond begins to stir.  The first thing he sees is Claire and Aaron and he is thankful that they are still alive and well.  His night had been plagued with nightmares and it's good to see something that is still good.

Desmond walks over to make sure they are okay and checks on Hurley as well.  The trek to the Others village is long and quiet.  No one talks as they trudge through the dense undergrowth.  They all have demons waging war on their souls, some pain that they carry with them always.  Claire and Hurley miss Charlie.  Desmond feels responsible for his death.  Sawyer is separated from the one person he ever truly cared about.  And Locke has lost his way.  They are all lost, but yet they think they are better off than the ones on the beach.  At least their lives are safe.  But they dont know what lies ahead, no one does.

They walk for what seems like forever to Claire.  Aaron grows heavy in her tired arms, but she refuses to ask for help.  He is her responsibility, her baby, her strength.  He's all that keeps her going as she blindly puts one foot in front of the other.

Desmond keeps to himself as they forge ahead.  He stays to the back of the group.  That way he can keep an eye on things and have time to think.  All he can think about though is Claire and how bad he feels for her.  Finally, they reach their destination and he's glad for the distraction.  Locke helps them all find houses.  Most of them share a house with someone, except for Locke, Desmond, and Claire.  Locke says Claire and Aaron need their privacy and space, so he finds her a nice little house just for her and Aaron.  Locke prefers to live alone and Desmond requests the same.  He has too much pain in his heart right now to deal with anyone else.

Life goes on and everyone falls into daily routines for the next few days.  Claire spends her time taking care of Aaron and doing laundry.  Occasionally she sits on the front porch and watches the house across the way, wondering what he does when hes not checking in on her and Aaron.

Desmond spends his days talking with Locke, Sawyer, and Hurley.  They are trying to figure out where to go from here and how to uncover Ben's secrets.  At least twice a day he goes to check on Claire and Aaron making sure they have everything they need.  A sadness still hangs over both of them.  But somehow when they are both in the same room together, that sadness is'nt so overwhelming.

One afternoon, Claire isn't feeling so well.  Hurley tells her to go take a nap, he'll take care of Aaron.  Claire is reluctant at first, but knowing Hurley only wants to help, she eventually gives in and lets him take Aaron.  She lays down and is immediately sound asleep.  Hurley takes Aaron with him to Locke's house, where he finds Locke, Sawyer, Ben, and Desmond deep in conversation.  Ben keeps telling them that they are coming for him and will kill everyone on the island.  The others are trying to decide if he's lying or not.  Locke isn't sure, Sawyer thinks Ben is full of shit as usual, Hurley is too busy rocking a crying Aaron, and Desmond has a really bad feeling about this.

Then out of now where the house rocked by a horrible boom coming from outside the house.  The men all fly to their feet, grabbing guns and running outside, except for Hurley who they tell to stay inside and watch over Aaron.  Bullets are flying in every direction and chaos ensues as the people from the freighter attack.  Locke and Ben are arguing as ususal, so Sawyer and Desmond decide to go gather the other people who are with them.  But before they can get started, another house explodes.  Desmond's mind worries for Claire as he turns to Sawyer in a panic.  "We have to get Claire!"

Sawyer is in complete agreement and they rush toward Claire's house.  They are about 25 feet away when, right before their eyes, Claire's house is hit and explodes into flames.  "Bloody hell!" Des cries out, followed by a loud "Son of a bitch!" from Sawyer.  And then as reality sinks in, they both cry out for her as they start to head toward the house.

"Stop!" Locke yells.  "She;s gone.  There's no way she survived that explosion.  WE have to get to safety."  And as if on cue, Aaron cries out again.  "We have to get Aaron to safety", Locke adds, determined that they not go check Claire's house.

Desmond and Sawyer both shake their heads no and run to Claire's house.  They fight their way inside, past the flames and look everywhere, but can't find her.  The flames become too overwhelming and they have to leave the house.  Once outside, Desmond turns to Sawyer.  "I'll find her brotha.  I'm not giving up.  You go, take Aaron, protect him.  It's what she'd want."

"Ok," Sawyer concedes.  "But be careful.  We'll meet you back at the beach."  He looks at Desmond sadly.  "I don't think you're going to find anything.  There's no way anything survived inside of there."

Desmond shakes his head.  "I will find her!"  He rushes off behind the house and Sawyer heads off with Locke, Hurley, Ben, and Aaron.  Sawyer is determined that he will protect Aaron.  The poor child has now lost everything he had.  Sawyer doesn't want to see his own childhood replayed in Aaron.  He'll make sure he's taken care of.

As Desmond heads around the back of the house looking for another way in, he realizes the back door is open.  He didn't open it and he doesn't think Sawyer did either.  His head turns to the left, away from the house, and that's when he spots her.  Claire is lying motionless, crumpled on the ground in the tall grass behind her house.  She must have been running out the back door when the explosion happened.  He runs to her and drops to his knees beside her.  "Claire!  Please...please be alive."  He checks for a pulse and finds one.  It's weak, but it's there.  Desmond leans down and puts his cheek close to her lips.  He feels a soft puff of air hit his cheek.  She's still breathing.  "Claire, come on, wake up, luv."

She doesn't respond, but instead a bullet flies through the air close by.  He has to get her up to hide her until danger has passed.  Desmond cradles Claire in his arms, holding her close to his chest as he hurries into the nearest area of dense bushes and undergrowth just inside the jungle.

He lays her gently on the ground and kneels beside her, pulling her head onto his lap, stroking her hair as he cringes at the sound of explosions and bullets.  He's bound and determined to take care of her.  He's not going to let her hurt or worse, die.  He will take care of her.  Nightfall comes and the chaos and destruction have stopped.  He's tired and leans back against a nearby tree, her head still in his lap.  He knows he needs to rest and continues to caress her hair, trying to comfort her as he drifts off to sleep.

Thanks girlies!  Here's the next part.  Hope you like. :) The punctuation keeps getting screwed up when I copy and paste, so I'm just leaving it. :p

Chapter 3 More Bad News

Desmond fell asleep against a tree with an unconscious Claire in his lap. The people that attacked are long gone and he somehow managed to sleep. It started out as a fitful sleep, constantly waking up to check on Claire, haunted by memories of the days prior. But his body finally gave in to exhaustion and slept until the sun began to come over the tops of the trees. Even then, he didnt wake until he felt Claire begin to stir. Hes wide awake now, wanting to check on her and make sure shes not injured.

Claire wakes slowly, coming out of what feels like a thick fog. She cant remember where she is and almost jumps when she realizes shes in someones lap. Shes incredibly sore and weak and cant remember what happened. Her eyes move up to see the face above her. Its Desmond. She manages to find her voice and speaks softly. HowWhere am I? Her face is full of confusion. The last thing she remembers was going into her house to take a nap.

Desmonds body floods with relief as she looks up and speaks. He slowly helps her to sit up, supporting her fragile frame. Claireyoureyoure okay, lass. How do you feel? Does your head hurt? Are you hurting anywhere else?

His barrage of questions comes as a surprise. Iyeah, Im okay. I have a really bad headache and Im sore all over. Im kind of dizzy too. What happened? Wheres Aaron? she asks, looking to him for answers. She tries to sit up further, but her head starts to spin and she reaches out for him, steadying herself as she holds her head.

Aarons fine. Hes with Hurley and Sawyer. Those peoplethe ones that Ben said were coming. He waits for a nod of recognition from her. They attacked us, blew up your house. Locke, Ben, and Hurley took Aaron and headed for safety at the beach and Sawyer and I came looking for you. Once the house became completely engulfed in flames, we thought you were dead. I told him to go back with the others and I kept looking for you.

Claire lets out a sigh a relief. She knows Sawyer and Hurley will protect Aaron with their lives. We need to go find them Desmond.

Desmond shakes his head. I dont think youre strong enough to make the trip yet Claire. Its a long way to the beach. The threat is gone now. I think we need to find somewhere to stay here for now until you are stronger.

No, Claire says scrambling to her feet, or at least attempting to. She wobbles and Desmond jumps to his feet to catch her, letting her lean against him as she sighs in defeat.

We have to get you somewhere to rest and heal, yeah? Im worried you have a concussion or something, he said, touching her forehead softly. He supports her as they walk to one of the houses that wasnt destroyed during the attack.

They spend the next day and a half there, letting Claire rest and heal, getting her strength back. Desmond does think she has a concussion, but just a slight one. He takes care of her, watching over her the whole time they are there. A strong bond is forming between them, but ask either of them and they would deny it at this point even though they feel it. Every time their hands accidently touch, every time they brush in the narrow hallway they feel it.

As they are preparing for the long hike to the beach, a loud noise comes from outside the house. DesmondDesmondLancelotWhere the hell are you? Sawyer yells as he walks through the ruins that was once home to the Others.

Claire and Desmond move cautiously toward the door, not sure if they should go outside or not. Wary of who this could be. But as soon as the word Lancelot comes out of his mouth, they both look at each other knowing it could only be Sawyer coming to look for them. Claire briefly wonders why he isnt calling her name as well, but shrugs it off. They step outside into the morning sunlight and Desmond calls out to him. Sawyer!

Sawyers head spins around, a smile on his face, happy to see the missing Scot. There you are. When you didnt come back His voice trails off as Claire comes into view. He looks at her first as if he were seeing a ghost and then his eyes fill with sadness. Mamacita, he says softly. I thoughtyou wereyoure alive.

Well, of course I am Sawyer, Claire says laughing softly until she sees the look in his eyes. Whats wrong.?

Sawyer stammers over his words, still shocked to see Claire alive and suddenly regretful for everything that has happened since he and Desmond parted ways. Iwewe thought you were dead.

Desmond senses there is more to it and he looks Sawyer in the eyes. Whats going on brotha?

We thought she was dead. There was no way someone could have survived that explosion. I took Aaron to Kate. Rescue came, cept they couldnt take all of us. I told Kate to take Aaron to safety, to take care of him that its what she would have wanted. He looks at Claire sadly, not knowing what to say to her.

Anger quickly fills Claires tiny body. You what? she yells as she starts after Sawyer. Desmond grabs her quickly and holds her back, knowing Sawyer only did what he thought was best and he had no way of knowing she was alive. Claire struggles against Desmonds hold. Let go of me!

No lass. Now listen, Sawyer was only protecting Aaron. He thought you were dead. He had no choice. Theyll be coming back for the rest of us, Im sure, Desmond says still holding Claire tight to his chest, trying to be as calming as he can, even though hes extremely worried himself.

I wouldnt be so sure of that, Sawyer sighs in defeat. Rescue came as soon as I made it back to the beach. We havent seen any sign of them since.  Locke ran off yelling something about saving the island by moving it, he said shaking his head. I think Mr. Cleans finally lost it.

It wasnt your choice to make, Claire yells suddenly, tears rolling down her face. She starts fighting Desmond harder. She breaks free and runs into the house that she and Desmond have been staying in, slamming the door behind her.

Sawyer and Desmond both call out for her at the same time, but to no avail. Sawyer frowns deeply. Mamacitas not going to take this well Lancelot, not well at all. When the Others took her baby before He shakes his head again.

Desmond sighs. He feels like this is all his fault. Charlies death started a domino effect of pain falling upon Claire and he fells like it was all his doing. He looks at Sawyer. Go on back to camp. Tell them were both alive and well be back there in a day or so when shes completely healed, yeah? Theres no rush now... He doesnt want to finish the sentence and lets the rest of the words die away. Im going to go check on her. When we get back to the beach we have to figure out a way to get out of here and get her baby back.

Sawyer nods his head in agreement. Good luck Lancelot. Youre going to need it. He gives Desmond a pat on the back and heads out into the jungle back toward the beach.

Desmond approaches the house slowly. As he reaches the front door, he can hear Claires sobs echoing off the walls.
