Chapter 17

Kate slept with Sawyers arms around her that night. It had been an emotionally trying day for both of them, but it was easy for them both to find their way back home to one another. Like second nature.

Sawyer didnt press Kate for sex, knowing she needed more time to heal. Jack really did a number on her and he couldnt even think his name without nostrils flaring. Sawyer wished the man dead, and he was a patient man, confident it would only be a matter of time. He loved Kate with his whole heart, couldnt believe he ever doubted that love, and he would do anything, anything at all to protect her.

Sleeping better than he had for the first time in months, Sawyer knew he was home. Kate had also come through an emotional metamorphosis in these past few months. She knew her love for Sawyer ran deep, but she also knew no one could ever replace him. He was her man, and she loved him.

Their little baby boy proof of their love, Kate now had the family she always wanted.

They opened their eyes at the same time, both of them hearing the baby crying and Kate turned around and looked over at Sawyer Morning. She greeted him groggily with a soft smile.

Sawyer smiled back at her tiredly and he replied..."Mornin Freckles."

That deep southern drawl coming out and Kate felt tingles trickle down their body. He looked back at the babys bedroom and then to Kate and Sawyer remarked..." So you got your own alarm clock huh?"

Sawyer nodded, trying to look enlightened and he replied..." Oh so thats how it works?" He mused flashing her a coy grin.

Kate laughed swatting his chest lightly and then she kissed him, remarking as she pulled away..."Come on, the alarm clock needs to be changed and fed."

Kate spent the rest of the morning showing Sawyer how to change a diaper and give Jamie his bottle.

He smiled softly and remarked..."I highly doubt Ill ever be as good as you baby, but its nice to know theres still hope." Kate scrunched her nose back at Sawyer musingly, thinking he was being silly, when Sawyer caught her off guard and replied "I love you Freckles."

Kates smile turned straight in a matter of seconds. She was amazed at how fast he could melt her heart, and she met his gaze longingly. Putting her free hand on his jaw and neck Kate pierced him with her intense green stare. Just wanting to hold him now, to be in his arms, she rested her head on his chest, as her other arm held Jamie. Closing her eyes, she felt his arms encircle her, and Kate tried not to cry.

She had missed him so much in the time they were apart, he would never know how hard that was for her, or how she regretted every minute that Sawyer wasnt there for Jamies birth. And Kate whispered, trying to control the emotion in her voice..." I love you too James."

Sawyer closed his eyes this time inhaling her scent. Mother holding son, father holding mother, he never wanted to let go. But finally a few minutes later, Kate felt Jamies little body sink into her shoulder. He had fallen asleep. Kate looked up at Sawyer briefly and then down at Jamie and she gently placed him back in his crib. Kate kissed his little blonde head and then she went back to Sawyer, taking his hand, she led him out of the room.

When they finally arrived back in the bedroom, Kate turned around facing him. Her hand back on his neck, she looked up into his eyes and asked him need fully "Make love to me?"

Sawyers gaze was filled with pain as he remembered the day before and her attack from Jack and he asked her with hand on her cheek "Baby, you sure?"

He let out a soft sigh of relief and met her gaze with mixed emotions about it. Sawyer was about to tell Kate what he thought of Jack, when she surprised him by asking him "What about you? Is it true you have a daughter?"

His fingers stopped moving through Kates hair and he looked down to meet her gaze with apprehension. First off wondering how in the hell she found out about that and secondly wondering how he was going to answer it. But Sawyer resolved that with Kate, truth was the only option, she could see though any lie he told so Sawyer finally answered..." Yeah I do."

Kate wasnt angry or upset with Sawyer, but she genuinely wanted to understand how a man could turn his back on his own flesh and blood and she leaned up on her elbow looking into his eyes, asking him "What happened to her?"

Sawyer met Kates gaze with pain filled eyes, pausing for a moment in regret, he finally explained it all "Her mother was a con job(Kate looked down briefly in thought and then back up at Sawyer, her gaze never wavering as Sawyer continued) We got kinda close durin it all, were talking about runnin away together, but the plans fell through and I ended up takin her money anyway."

Kate frowned not liking the sound of this, but she let Sawyer continue out of respect..." Few months later, cops musta got a tip to my recent whereabouts and I was arrested...She turned me in. Then about 7 months later, she turns up during visitin hours and shows me a picture of her, named her Clementine."
Kate met Sawyers gaze, for the first time seeing the sadness in his eyes and how hard this was for him, she took his hand in hers Sawyer sighed, knowing this painted him in a terrible light, infact it was true, he wasnt a good person, probably would never be worthy of love. He didnt know how in the hell, it happened with Kate.

Closing his eyes, he concluded "Anyway, when I got out of the clinker bout a month later, I came into some money, a job I took in prison for the warden, and I made sure they put my share in a bank account for her. Shes in Albuquerque."

Kate nodded softly and Sawyer explained the last part "knew id never be the kindof father she needed me to be, so I left her the money instead. (He closed his eyes and looked down at Kates hand still holding his and he added) Always wanted to go back and tell her I was sorry for it all."

Kate couldnt help the tears that came to her eyes. It was so sad. She felt so sad for this little girl, and Sawyer. And she leaned up to kiss him softly, her eyes closed tightly shut.

Kate finally replied softly, her voice full of emotion "You are a good father James."

She pulled back and looked into his eyes, her hand resting on his jaw and Kate remarked with a nod "You did the right thing." Kate knew, just like Sawyer, the people they were before they got to that island, neither one of them could have handled the responsibility of a baby alone. It all of the sudden made sense for Kate as to why Sawyer took it so hard when she first told him she was pregnant with Jamie. It was because he already saw himself as a failed father.

She kissed him again, knowing she was treading on personal ground. This was a definite soft spot for Sawyer and Kate knew full well that Sawyer didnt handle his vulnerabilities well.

Sighing Kate explained, not wanting Sawyer to think she was hounding him "Im sorry, Jack told me about your daughter and I didnt know what to think."

Sawyers brow furrowed at Kates mention of Jack again, and he remarked outwardly cool "Yeah, seems the doc said a lot of things, I called him a couple times to check on you and he said you two were livin together. Made it sound serious too."

Kates nostrils flared when she heard that Jack had lied to Sawyer about she and him. And she asked for confirmation "You called him?"

Sawyer nodded, realizing now that Jack was a big fat liar, and a dead man. And Kate looked back at Sawyer realizing the same thing, that Jack had lied to her. He had betrayed her trust and her friendship and he had tried to keep her and Sawyer apart. Kate didnt think she could ever forgive Jack for that.

Pulling Kate close to him Sawyer held her, knowing what she must be feeling he replied softly "Dont worry about him baby, Karma always comes back..."

Kate nodded knowingly and held Sawyer a little tighter and Sawyer replied "And I aint ever leavin you again."

Kates smile beamed at his last remark and she promised him.."I wont ever run from you."

She met his emotional gaze looking up, as green met blue and Sawyer leaned down to kiss Kate, sealing their promises with a kiss to stop time, she held him and they didnt leave that bed until an hour later, when Jamie woke up ready for his bottle.

Chapter 17, part 2

About 6 months later Kate found out she was pregnant again. She didnt know how to break the news to Sawyer, but she had a feeling, he might handle this one a little better.

Things had been wonderful between them. Kate had never been happier in her life. They moved to a house on the beach, a place for where both of them had an equal share, and Jamie was getting big, he even was crawling now, and Kate loved to watch Sawyer when he was with them.

It was the most amazing thing shed ever witness. Leaning against the door jam, Kate watched Jamie laugh as Sawyer picked him up and raised him in his arms..."Alright Jimmy dean, I think its time for those Zs."

Sawyer saw Kate through the corner of his eye and he remarked "You see, ya gotta start with high expectations, dream about those hot pin up girls, like your ma, keep that bar high and youll never be disappointed."

Kate came in and tickled Sawyer under his arm as he passed by "Aaah (he laughed as her fingers dug under his arms and Sawyer exclaimed jerking) hey Freckles, Im carryin precious cargo here."

Kate followed Sawyer back into the kitchen after he was done with Jamie and she tried to figure out how she was going to break the news to him.

Sawyer took a beer out of the fridge and leaned against the counter, meeting Kates gaze with intrigue, he asked her "So I thought you were gonna go run to the mall Freckles? You decide to hang out with us boys instead?"

He smirked back at Kate and added "Cause I can think of a hundred ways to kill a little time."

Kate smiled and shook her head, replying "Well, I was going to go to the mall," until Kate waited till she had Sawyers full attention and then decided to just blurt it out "Till I took a home pregnancy test and found out it was positive."

Sawyer choked on his last swig of beer coughing it back. "Youre pregnant?" He asked her for clarification, wondering if she was just fucking with him.

Kate nodded in reply and waited on a pause apprehensive to hear Sawyers reaction, but she couldnt help the smile from creeping over her face however, she was excited for this one, knowing she wanted to do things right this time, and she waited on held breath for him.

Sawyer tried to steady his breathing as he looked back at Kate realizing that she was dead serious on this and he asked her trying to get a bearing on things "How long do you think?"

Kate pursed her lips and answered... "Well, I was about 2 weeks late, so it could be anywhere between that and a month I suppose."

Sawyer nodded trying to process it all, his brows creased and Kate worried that he didnt feel the same way about this baby as she did. She had so hoped that he would have gotten past that part and she looked back at him apprehensive now too.

Finally after what seemed like an eternity Sawyer turned to Kate, his hand rested on her back and he leaned in to kiss her replying with a smirk "So I spose this means Im not gonna have any of my own shirts again huh?"

Kate smiled; relieved to hear the acceptance in his voice and she shook her head defiantly answering "Nope."

Sawyer raised his eyebrows and remarked coyly "Well then, I guess theres only one thing left to do."

Kate met Sawyers gaze curiously and she asked him questioningly "And whats that?"

Sawyer swept off the countertop, lifting Kate up to it, he finally replied with a smirk as he stood in between her thighs "Celebrate sugar, celebrate all night long."

He finally answered as his lips took hers and then he lifted Kates top off over her head. It didnt take them long to strip down and start going at it like rabbits.

Sawyer finally moved Kate to the kitchen table so she wouldnt hurt her back and he could lay her down in front of him. The sex was amazing for Kate. She should have known, when she was craving Sawyer instead of cake while buying a devils food at the grocery store that she was. But Kate needed the affirmation.

They werent officially trying, but Sawyer knew that Kate had slipped with her birth control pills once or twice, so it didnt come as a total surprise. She made love to him with all she had, feeling like even though the baby was already there, that they were making her together right now.

Sawyer pulled back and met her gaze curious for a moment, there was a small flicker there, wondering if Kate was serious and she explained "You already proposed to me, and I said yes, and now we have the family and the house...And....and I just."

" You want to go to Vegas Freckles?" Kate smiled back at him and she replied after giving it some thought "Well...we could go there and just get it over with..."

Sawyer didnt mind that idea. Kate already had his heart, but he could tell there was more to it and he asked her with a smirk "But?"

Kate met his gaze with a twinkle in her eyes and she sat up looking into his eyes as he stood in between her thighs..." But, it would really be nice to have something small and simple, maybe right here on the beach?"

Kate knew she was asking too much. Sawyer would never agree to a real ceremony with the whole priest thing, and Kate added, trying to seal the deal "We could even ask Desmond to marry us; I believe he was a monk at one point."

Sawyer looked down in thought, never knowing that about Lancelot, he thought it was strange, creasing his brows, and Kate used her hand to stroke the side of his cheek, trying to use her voice to coax him, she replied "It will just be us and a few of our friends, 10 people tops... "

And then Kate lifted his chin and leaned in to kiss the tip of it, as her lips worked slowly to brush his bottom lip, she met his aquiline gaze once more and she added with a soft smile "Then we can celebrate all night long."

She leaned in to kiss his lips lightly, dipping her tongue into his mouth and then Kate came down on him drawing out a groan from Sawyer as she awaited his answer.

And Sawyer brushed his lips against Kates as they kissed partially and he talked partially remarking "Those lips of yours are pretty convincing Freckles"

Kate smiled and their lips danced together again. And Kate replied coyly..."I always get what I want baby." Sawyer smirked into her mouth and he answered back "So you do"

His tongue dove into her mouth pulling out another moan from her and he remarked with a smirk "But I get the last word."

Kate couldnt help but smile, his take charge attitude always turned her on, and he kissed her again deeply. Kate pulled away hazy eyed once more, realizing that she still didnt have an answer to her question and she asked him again "So?"

Sawyer pretended to look confused and he asked her"So? What?"

He shook his head pretending to be lost, and Kate tangled her fingers through his hair, gripping his ends firmly, and Sawyer smirked back at her again, knowing he had been had, he finally replied "Oh all right Freckles, if you really wanna get hitched here, Ill marry you, and someone has to, to keep you in line after all.... "

Kate rolled her eyes and she replied sarcastically "Youre charming, do you know that?"

Sawyer smirked devilishly and he replied "Course I do baby, and I look forward to charmin you for the rest of my life."

Kates smile wavered and all the sudden she felt butterflies in her stomach. Like this was the real thing, they were really getting married. And then Sawyer asked her an unexpected question "You sure your ready for domestic bliss though Sassafras?"

She met his gaze in thought for a moment, thinking about her life on the run, her past, and all the things she had experienced up until this moment. Kate knew a part of herself would always be free and wild. And she knew Sawyer had that same wild spirit. But she was truly happy. She couldnt remember the last time she was this happy. Like all the sudden everything that was broken inside her finally mended back together. And Kate looked into Sawyers eyes, her soul mate, and she nodded her head in reply

"Im ready."

Three months and one baby bump later, everyone was there. Hurley stood off to the side holding Jamie with Claire and Aaron, while Sun held her baby Ji-Yeon and Jin had his arm wrapped around her. Sayid was sitting next to his fiancé, Nadia. The only one absent, was Jack, who Sawyer refused to let Kate invite. He didnt want to see him anywhere near Kate or he would do something he would most likely not regret.

In front of the beautiful ocean, Desmond stood before Sawyer and Kate and read from his scripture. Sawyer dressed casually in a white dress shirt and khaki pants, and Kate wore a pretty pale lavender sun dress, with an orange hibiscus flower in her hair. Both of them looked amazing, but Sawyer couldnt help feeling a little impatient when Desmond got carried away

"Love is the most divine of feelings, to be honored and shared between husband and wife till..."

Sawyer cleared his throat signaling Desmond to wrap it up. Kate smirked back at Sawyer and she squeezed his hand, and Desmond remarked clearing his throat "Do you Katherine Austen take James Ford to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

Sawyer waited on held breath for Kates reply. Thinking if she backed out now he didnt know what he would do, his thoughts interrupted by her reply, Kate finally answered with confidant smile

"I do."

Sawyers dimples deepened, feeling more confident, Desmond turned to him and he asked

"And do you, ah (Sawyer gave him a weird stare, and Desmond felt uncomfortable all of the sudden using his real name) Do you Sawyer, take Kate to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

Relieved he had gotten it out; Desmond looked from Sawyer to Kate. The strong current between them could be cut with a knife. Sawyer met Kates gaze knowingly, his eyes fixed on hers, as her free hand rested on her small bump, he knew that this is where he was meant to be, she was the woman he was meant to spend the rest of his life with, and Sawyer met Kates green eyes, nodding his head he finally replied

"I do."

Desmond smiled and he announced to the crowd. But before he could announce, Sawyer had taken Kate in his arms and kissed her full on.

Getting some whistles from the crowd Sayid cheered with his fiancé, Nadia, and Hurley called out "Dudes get a room!"

Kate smiled back at them and Sawyer kissed her again. Desmond realized he wouldnt be allowed to talk unless he interrupted them and announced in his deep Scottish accent "I now pronounce you man and wife, Ladies and Gentlemen, please give a round of applause for Mr. and Mrs. Ford."

Kates smile was beaming as they chimed in with the clapping. Sawyer couldnt help but smile either and they made their way to the back of the house.

Sawyer, announced to everyone "Mohammeds gonna fire up the barbie with surf and turf and you can help yourself to drinks inside" He smirked back at Kate and replied softly so only she could hear "Cmon Freckles."

"We gotta go check on the cake." Sawyer called back to the crowd, Kates smile beaming she knew where they were really going and she didnt mind in the slightest, infact she couldnt wait, her heart beating faster with every step.

Sawyer pulled her to the bedroom with him, locked the door behind him and then he turned around, holding Kates face in his hands, he kissed her passionate and deeply finally pulling back he replied "Welcome home Mrs. Ford."

Flashing his dimples Kate smiled and he helped her pull her dress off over her head, and she replied briefly after kissing his soft mouth "Thank you, its good to be home Mr. Ford."

Guiding her back down on the bed, Sawyer found Kate ready and waiting and she never looked more beautiful than she did right now. Sealing the deal right their on their wedding bed, Sawyer made love to Kate with passion that would put the worlds greatest masterpieces to shame.

Settling into their lives together, Sawyer and Kate found that even though marriage and raising 1.5 children was challenging at times, they felt rewarded and fulfilled by it all. Sawyer even found a project to invest his settlement money in, one that would earn them a profit for the future, and he set aside savings for their children.

Kate was right, when they found out the sex of the baby, it was a girl. Kate insisted that Sawyer pick a name so he finally decided on Lily. He always thought the name was pretty one. So Lily Ford it was. Kate was about 8 months along and her doctor told her she was coming along well in the pregnancy.

Telling Sawyer she would stop by the grocery store and pick up something for dinner, Kate never expected to run into this person, but striding out of the liquor department, his eyes were blood shot, beard unkempt and his hair was all messy...

" Jack?"

Kate asked surprised wondering if it was really him. He looked terrible. Kate took a step back when he stepped closer to her. Looking down at her protruding belly, Jack, finally recognized her and he replied back "Kate!"

Gasping in relief, Jack stepped closer and Kate stiffened up.."Kate, Ive been trying to call you, I have to talk to you about something, its really important."

Kate didnt like the way this felt, thinking she should just go and let Jack be on his way. She could smell the alcohol on his breath and he staggered closer to her.

"Kate you have to listen to me, I swear, this is important."

"Jack, I have to go." Kate replied meeting his gaze sharply and she pushed her cart up to the checkout counter. But Jack followed her along, putting his hand on her shoulder, Kate suddenly stiffened up and remarked coolly "Dont touch me?"

The cashier behind the counter looked back at Kate concerned seeing her discomfort she asked her "This man botherin you honey? If he is I can get security over here right away. "

Jack glared at the cashier, and Kate shook her head, replying "No, he was just leaving werent you?"

Looking back at Jack she glared at him. Finally taking the hint Jack backed off and replied "Yeah Im going."

He rolled his eyes and strode out to the sidewalk, a bottle of booze under his coat, he staggered out.

The cashier sighed and remarked"Honey, you gotta get yourself a bodyguard with friends like that." Kate smiled politely and replied "I have one, hes just at home." The cashier smiled and finished ringing her up making small talk.

By the time she had all her groceries bagged, Jack was just a faded memory and Kate made her way out to the car. It was starting to get dark and she had to fumble with her keys to find the lock opening, but Kate finally managed getting her trunk open. She got a couple bags in when someone darted out towards her. He grabbed her from behind and put his hand up over her mouth.

Kate tried to scream and she stomped on her attackers foot struggling in his strong grip, and Jack replied drunkenly"Relax, Kate its me...I really need to talk to you."

Kate yanked out of his hold terrified beyond her control she hissed back at him "Get away from me!!!"

The memories of that night came rushing back and all the sudden Kate felt scared again, and Jack shook his head putting his hand out Kate stop, "Im not going to hurt you, I was out of control last time, Im sorry, but I have to tell you who came to see meIt was...It was John Locke...He said we have to go back to the island Kate."

Kate shook her head and stepped back gripping the side of the car. All of the sudden she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and Jack continued his verbal assault "He said Juliets alive, they all still are, and the only way we can save her is if we all go back."

" No Jack, we cant." She winced in pain, feeling it grow stronger now. "We can never go baaahhhh" Kate cried, feeling the pain rip through her now.

"Unhhhhhhh" And all the sudden there was blood trickling down her leg. "Jack" Kate breathed, starting to panic, she replied.

"Somethings wrong....Somethings wrong with the baby..." Kate collapsed on her knees as Jack stepped closer to her trying to help her from falling and Kate replied weakly trying to hold her burning tears in

"Call....call Sawyer."

And those were the last words she spoke before losing complete consciousness. The world turning black for Kate.

Chapter 18

When he got the call from Jack, Sawyer thought it was a prank at first, but Jack assured him it wasnt. Kate was in the emergency room at St. Sebastians this very moment. Knowing Kate wasnt home yet Sawyer dropped the phone in panic. He called their next-door neighbor and asked the couple if they could watch Jamie.

They hadnt even gotten in the door before Sawyer rushed past them with keys in hand.

Speeding like the devil, Sawyer wasnt surprised when he found Jack there waiting for him in the lobby nervously. Sawyer was in no mood to talk to him, his jaw clenched, he wanted to strangle the man, but his concern for Kate outweighed his anger and he growled back at Jack..."What happened?"

As Jack led him to her room he replied earnestly..."I ran into her at the grocery store." If Jack could see Sawyers face he would see red, but they continued at the fast pace and Jack continued"I didnt know she would go into labor, but I think I might have upset her."

Sawyer glared back at Jack, his eyes cool and he asked him calmly"What did you say to her?"

"Sawyer, I dont think this is the time" Jack replied, but Sawyer interrupted him biting back

"What did you SAY???" Sawyer demanded.

People were starting to look at the two men and Jack didnt want to cause a scene, knowing Sawyer was ready to toss a few bricks at him, Jack finally sighed and explained

"I had a visit from John Locke the other dayHe wants us to go back to" But before Jack could finish his sentence Sawyer slugged him right in the eye.

Waiting for Jack to straighten back up after the first initial shock of the blow, Sawyer threatened

"I so much as see you in this hallway (they were standing outside of Kates room now, and Sawyer growled quietly) Ill break your fucking neck."

Jack could see the anger penetrating off Sawyers body, he met the mans angry stare and decided it would be safer for him to back off right now. He stepped back and replied with a surprising calmness.

"Her vitals are fine, the convulsion caused her water to break, and if they cant induce labor, and she may require a cesarean."

Sawyer met Jacks gaze with a tortured look on his face, worried about Kate once more, he rushed into the room.

Seeing Kate tied up to tubes and her face pale as a ghost, disturbed Sawyer beyond belief. He rushed to her side, her eyes open to slits and Sawyer grabbed the nearest chair. He sat down and began stroking his fingers through her hair. Seeing Kate like this was tearing him up inside and he couldnt help but think, what if he lost her?

His voice was dry and he finally croaked out"Kate? Freckles babyIm here."

Kate heard his voice pulling her out of her weak daze; she opened her eyes slowly and looked back at him forcing a weak smile. Kate took his hand in hers. She was cold and clammy.

Sawyer continued to stroke her forehead and Kate replied weakly"I guess she wanted out early"

She blinked heavily and Sawyer kissed the top of her hand remarking

"Born to run just like her ma"

Kate smiled weakly again and she asked him"Did Jack call you?" Sawyers smile faded not wanting Kate to worry about him or think about that now, he replied

"Yeah, the doc wont be botherin us anymore tonight."

Sawyer blamed Jack for Kates accident. If he hadnt upset her like he did, Kate probably wouldnt be here right now. Shed be home with him in bed, safe and sound. Sawyer had reached the end of his rope with Jackass. The good doc would come to learn soon that it was one thing to cross him, but to hurt his wife and unborn child? No Jacks days were numbered.

Turning his attentions back to Kate, Sawyer asked her"What can I do baby? What can I get you?" Kate closed her eyes tiredly and she replied hazily"Nothingjust stay here with me"

"Im never leaving you babyYou just rest sugarI aint goin anywhere."

Several hours, an epidural for Kate, and 2 sedatives for Sawyer later, the proud parents of Lily Anne Ford (Anne was Kates middle name) sat together exhaustedSawyer nearly had two heart attacks after a couple close calls, his blood pressure through the roof, the doctor finally took mercy on him and gave him a prescription for benazepril.

Kate was physically and emotionally exhausted from it all. She had to have a blood transfusion before Sawyer got there. Thankfully no one had told him that or he may have passed out instead of just yelling at everyone who passed through the door.

"You did it." Sawyer exclaimed meeting Kates pale face and tired expression. He used a damp cloth to wipe her perspiring forehead and Kate smiled weakly back at him, thinking it may have been a good thing that he wasnt there for Jamies birth.

"I did it (Kate replied tiredly taking his hand weakly in hers she added with a soft smile) we did it."

"And you never looked more beautiful" Sawyer remarked with a smile, bringing out a laugh from Kate. She suddenly held her side and winced in pain. Swatting him, Kate replied with a smile"Dont make me laugh."

Smiling, Kate was sure she looked dreadful. But she loved him for it. Taking his hand she kissed the spot between his thumb and forefinger and then the nurse interrupted them peeking her head in with a wadded blanket.

"Somebody wants to say hi." She announced cheerfully. And then for the first time Sawyer noticed that it wasnt just a blanket she was holding, that was their little girl and his apprehensive face finally displayed a proud smile

"Heres your little angel." The nurse remarked carefully placing Lily in his arms. He looked down in awe. She was so beautiful, full lashes, lips, and chestnut locks just like her mother. And Lily looked back at Sawyer, showing a pair of sparkling blue eyes and dimples like her father. Remarking in wonder, Sawyer shook his head and replied to Kate

"Shes so tiny." Kate smiled and took Lilys little hand in her fingers and she added"Shes beautiful isnt she?" Sawyer smiled and nodded in agreement

"Yep, gonna be a looker just like her ma, watch out world."

Kate smiled and concluded"And shell have her father wrapped around her little finger." Kate knew a daddies girl when she saw one. And she smiled proudly at Sawyer.

Sawyer grinned back at Kate and he leaned in to kiss her lips softlypulling back slightly and he replied"You did good babyI proud of you." Kate smiled back at him, the shiny light of new tears formed in her eyes, because she was so happy, and Kate asked Sawyer after a long moment

"So how do you think Jamie will handle all of this?" Sawyer smirked at the thought. If Jamie was a chip off the old block, like his father Sawyer knew it would be a meeting in the making. Smiling back at Kate he replied thoughtfully

"Well, hell probably give her a hard time at first, but once she charms him, it will be love at first sight."

Kate smiled knowing Sawyer was probably right. If their kids were anything like their parents, it would be a bond unbreakable.

A couple months later they had found that two kids definitely werent any easier than one. Sawyer and Kate had their hands full to put it mildly. Kate was just picking up some papers in the hospital and was on her way out when she ran into Jack again.

She was nervous about running into Jack here. Glad Sawyer wasnt here at least, because when it came to Jack, she knew Sawyer wasnt bluffing. He was seriously at the end of his rope.

"Hi Kate." Jack said trying to break the ice and awkwardness that hung between them. "Jack." Kate acknowledged him looking down at her papers for a minute, not able to meet his gaze.

"Hows the baby?" Jack asked trying to be friendly. Kate really didnt want to be here, infact she wanted to be miles away right now, but she thought the less difficult she was, the faster she could get out, and finally replied

"Shes finegetting really big now." Jack smiled warmly and for a moment, while thinking about her little girl, Kate forgot about the bad blood between her and Jack. Her family had a habit of being able to do that to her. Bring her joy with a mere thought. But that all came tumbling down like a house of cards when Jack suddenly felt guilty offering her another apology for that night

"I really am sorry KateI never meant to hurt you"

Kate nodded softly not wanting to think about it anymore and she remarked

"I know JackIts okay." Kate replied starting to turn away, she added"I hope you take care of yourself Jackand find whatever youre looking for."

Jacks eyes looked emotional for a moment, tearand when Kate turned away, Jack stopped her by asking

"Have you heard from him yet? John Locke?"

Kate looked back at Jack, the pain and confusion gazing back as she realized he was losing it"Have I heard from John?" "Jack." Kate proclaimed trying to hold back her emotional dismay at seeing how much he had crumbled since the island, she finally remarked

"You need to get some help Jack, if not for you, for your patients."

Jack shook his head and he met Kates gaze with disbelief"You seriously forgot who we left back there Kate??? What happened?" Kate shook her head done with the conversation and she stepped back proclaiming

"You need help Jack, mental help, and I dont think your going to find it on that island." Kate finally sighed, at the end of her rope too and she concluded

"The best thing any of us can do now is move on JackIm happy now, were all happy, you can be happy again too if you just let goJust forget that place every happened and move on like the rest of us."

Kate stood up leaving for good this time. Jack didnt bother trying to stop her, it was pointless. She didnt believe him, butshe would.

"MmmmbabyLets go to bed." Sawyer smirked lazily back at Kate after kissing her. She had gotten her figure back now, and her sex drive, and he was fully prepared to take advantage of the situation at hand. They had just spent a long day trading off baby duties and he wanted to spend the rest of it winding down with her horizontally.

Kate smiled knowingly back at Sawyer deciding to play with him just a bit, Kate replied"Okay, you go onIll be there in just a little bit, I wanted to finish the last chapter of that book"

Sawyer looked back at Kate strangely and he asked her"Book? What book? Freckles, since when do you read books?"

Kate smirked back at him and sunk down on the lounge chair curling up in it like a cat, she lifted her copy of Pride and Prejudice and Sawyer creased his brows in disbelief. Trying to hold in his frustrations he replied sharply"Finesuit yourself Freckles, see ya in the morning then."

Sawyer was cranky now, not wanting Kate to see, he strode off to the shower to keep his frustrations at bay, trying to figure out if he did or said something, or maybe he was just losing his edge.

Kate couldnt help the Cheshire cat grin that creased over her lips when Sawyer left. He would never see her coming, she thought with a smirk.

Sneaking quietly into the bathroom, Kate saw Sawyer washing up in the shower. She paused for a minute to admire his beautiful physique, a body worthy of one of Michelangelos sculptures, she swallowed in pause and then she stepped towards him. Kate began peeling off her clothes layer by layer, first her top, a step, and then her pants, another step, followed by her bra and panties, until she was standing just outside the shower. Jack was convinced they all had to go back to the island, Kate tried her best to ignore him but now she was fed up herself. This was going too far, Jack had clearly lost it. Kate had to tell him enough was enough and she was going to do it tonight. Finally agreeing to meet him at the airport, she got dressed and slipped out of the house.

Thirty minutes later she was at the airport hanger, talking to Jack.

"We have to go back? We have to go back Jack???" Kate asked him angrily.

She couldnt believe his thick-headedness. "Do you actually hear yourself?" Kate looked back at him furiously.

"Its the only way Kate." Jack repliedand then Kate slapped him, her anger returning in full steam

"I dont ever want to hear from you or see you again JackTomorrow, Im getting a new phoneif you try to come to the house or send me anything, were moving, and if I run into you on the street or anywhere else you better walk the other way or Ill let him handle it."

Kates green eyes filled with a rage she never wanted to see or hear from Jack again. Jack shook his head in disbelief and Kate concluded venomously

"You arent the friend I thought you were Jack!"

Casting him one final heated glare she got in her car and sped off.

Sawyer had heard Kates phone ring earlier. Naturally, her getting a call at 2 am concerned him and when he snuck out of bed to eavesdrop, his concerned face quickly transformed to one of rage when he discovered who her late night caller was.

Sawyer didnt have time to find a sitter for the kids, so when he heard her car pull out of their driveway, he quickly wrapped up Jamie and Lily and put them in their car seats in his truck. They were both too tired to even realize they were going for a ride, and Sawyer drove with intense concentration, wanting to know what the hell this was all about. It sure didnt look or sound good.

Pulling up about 200 yards behind Kates car, Sawyer kept the truck in shadows. He couldnt hear their words, but he saw Kate get back into her car and then go back out to slap Jack hard.

Sawyer saw it all and he saw Kate drive off in a fury. He waited for Kate to leave and then he finally made his move. Driving his truck up to occupy the spot Kate had just left, Sawyer stepped out to Jacks surprise and addressed him

"Jack."

When Sawyer got home he knew hed have to deal with an angry Kate. Sawyer didnt think she was cheating on him. Jack made that part pretty clear earlier. He was still on that damn quest. Carrying the kids in with him through the door, Sawyer wasnt surprised when the lights came on in the kitchen and Kate came rushing up to him in worry.

"Where were you?" She asked her face all emotional. She looked like she had been crying and Sawyer replied dryly"I could ask you the same thing FrecklesBut I have a feeling neither one of us want to answer that question."

Kate met Sawyers steely blue gaze knowing he was onto her and she wanted to explain

"Sawyer, I think hes going to get himself killed."

"And thats a bad thing?" Sawyer asked Kate angrily, still upset about what went down.

Kate sighed and remarked"He was calling me, leaving messages, day and night, and I didnt want to worry you, I just wanted him to stop, and get some help."

Kate confessed still disturbed over the whole thing. Kate looked back at Sawyer regretfully not wanting him to be upset with her. But to her surprise, Sawyer didnt seem all that angry.

She thought he would be steaming out of the ears by now. Instead all he did was give her a simple explanation of his own

"Had a little chat with Jackass after you left(He met Kates gaze sincerely and replied) He wont be botherin you anymore."

Kate looked back at Sawyer confused and she asked him"WaitWhat?"

Sawyer forced a small smile and he remarked"Dont worry baby, we worked it out mano a mano, The doc understands now that he needs help."

She met his gaze in disbelief, unable to believe her ears, but when she finally locked into his, she saw that the hostility was gone. She hated Jack, but she feared Sawyer knowing the truth about Jack would make it worse. However, she was proud of the way he handled Jack. Sawyer had come a long way, Kate noted to herself.

Suddenly she felt guilty about sneaking behind his back and she exclaimed"Im so sorry for leaving tonightI love you, I have always love you and I just want us to live in peace now. Youre my family, my one and only and Ill do anything to protect that." Kate remarked taking his hand in hers as they stood together, half in a light kitchen, half in a darkened entryway.

Sawyer knew Kate meant what she said, it wasnt her fault she couldnt see what a threat Jack really was. But that often happened when the one closest to the fire was calling the shots. But lucky for her he did see and Sawyer replied finally with endearing eyes

"Baby, I love you too, and Ill do anythingI mean anything to protect you."

He smiled kindly and kissed her deeply on the lips. Sawyer tried to keep the crease in his brow hidden from Kate. But she couldnt know, she could never know what he told Jack that night.

Pulling away he looked down at their sleeping children and remarked with a soft smirk"Cmon Freckles, lets get the monsters to their cages."

Smiling softly he picked up a basket and handed one to Kate and they tucked their children in. Tired and exhausted from the nights events, Kate fell asleep almost instantly when they hit the bed.

Sawyer kept his eyes open a little longer, going back on his actions this evening, wondering if he made the right choice or not. Finally succumbing to the tiredness, Sawyers eyes fell heavy as his arm curved around Kates small frame. Protective even in sleep he would make sure that no one hurt her again.

Two weeks had passed since that night. Sawyer had coaxed Kate to go with him on a mini getaway. He had rented a beach house down the coast line and they were packing up the suitcases in the truck, the kids not far behind when Kate stopped dressing Jamie as she saw the news headline.

"Airplane sinks on Mexican coastline; one of the flight 815 passengers takes final plunge."

Kate gasped as she saw Jacks picture flash across the screen and she covered her mouth in shock.

"Sawyer!" Kate called him from the other room. "Sawyer get in here." Kate called and Sawyer poked his head in asking Kate with a smirk

"What, they decide to go all motley crue on you baby?" His smile faded when Kate gestured to the television and finally answered

"No, Its Jack, he tried to go back and his plane went down!"

Shaken up, Kate had argued with Jack about this extensively but she never thought he would actually try to do it, and the tragedy of it all, it was so sad.

Sawyer couldnt believe it was really happening and he shook his head pulling Kate to his chest in a strong embrace he remarked

"C'mere Freckles." Kate circled her arms around his waist and he held her tightly as they mourned the loss of one of their own together.

"I just cant believe he did it." Kate finally replied after a long moment. It was just so unearthing. And Sawyer replied gently

"Well wherever he is, Im sure hes in a better place." Sawyer replied still in shock himself. He was just taken by surprise over it all not quite ready to address this, trying to hold it together for Kate Sawyer pulled her into a hug again.

Kate accepted Sawyers gesture appreciatively and then she met his gaze with her large green eyes finally asking Sawyer

"So what should we do now?"

Sawyer met Kates gaze and he replied with creased brow"Well I think we should still get away, go to the beach house, tomorrow I can call in and find out where the memorial service is being held."

Kate nodded again wiping her mourning tears away she smiled faintly, thankful for Sawyers strength and replied

"Okay."

"Okay." He remarked in answer and placed a quiet kiss on Kates lips before they finished packing the kids up for their weekend of peace and solitude.

Sawyer didnt want it to happen this way, he mourned Jacks death in his own way, but karma was bigger then all of them. Even Sawyer couldnt help that, but he could help it a long.

Two weeks earlier when Sawyer talked to Jack at the airport, Jack certainly wasnt expecting to see him. Stepping back a little he stated his name

"Sawyer?" Jack tried to hide his surprise, but Sawyer paid no attentions to the mans nervousness stepping out in his leather jacket, he leaned against his truck and met Jacks gaze.

"ListenSawyer, I didnt want to" But Sawyer cut him out by holding his hand out signaling Jack to stop and he replied calmly

"Thats not why Im here Jack."

"Its not?" Jack asked him surprised and Sawyer shook his head in answer.

"I have this friend, who can help you." Sawyer explained and Jack looked back at him strangely.

"Help me with what?" Jack asked him questioningly and Sawyer explained"He knows about that place."

Jacks mouth opened just a little in awe wondering if Sawyer was really telling him what he thought he was telling him and Sawyer added"I got Kate and the kids now, we cant go back there, it aint safe, but Id be willing to hook you two up if you never try to contact us again."

Jack shook his head ironically in a faint smile, when he realized Kate had just basically asked of him the same thing. Neither of them every wanted to see him again. It seemed he really had burned a lot of bridges since he had been back. But Jack was a desperate man. He had to get back to save Juliet. If he could do that he could find his redemption, he believed he could find life worth living again. But then he remembered Lockes words and Jack replied

"But Locke said we could only get back if we all went together."

Sawyer shook his head standing stern on his negotiation and he remarked

"You go alone or not at all, thats the deal, take it or leave it Doc."

Jack nodded noting this is the closest he had ever been to getting back to that island. Still surprised that Sawyer was the messenger to get him back there, Jack wasnt sure what to think, but he had a feeling this was a one time offer from Sawyer, and you didnt look a gift horse in the mouth. He had to get back no matter what it took.

Finally nodding in reply, Jack concluded

"How do I get in touch with him?"

Sawyer nodded once and remarked"You wont, hell contact you."

And then Sawyer got back in his car concluding to Jack before he left

"Hope you find what your looking for Jack." And then he slammed the door and was off.

Driving for about 5 minutes, both children still sleeping soundly in the back of the truck, Sawyer pulled out his cell phone and called his pilot friend.

"Yeah, got this guy who needs a ride somewhere"

His friend did deals with him back in his conning days and Sawyer added

"You still got someone who does the ejection seat stunt right?"

His friend confirmed as much and Sawyer remarked

"Good. Ill give you the cash for the plane, hes goin to the south pacific, andFrank?"

He waited till he had the mans full attention and Sawyer concluded

"Make it look like an accident."

Sawyer hung up the phone after giving Frank Jacks contact information. Sitting there looking out at the ocean infront of him, he had pulled off on one of those highway rest stops. Thinking about all that had happened to him since that island, about all he went through with Kate. Sawyer knew he couldnt be happy knowing Kates attacker still roamed the streets freely. He loved her too damn much for that. He would give his life for Kate and their children in a heartbeat. Resolving that she would never know about this, he started the ignition once more and turned the truck home. Home to Kate.

Sawyer could forget about the past just as easily as she could and he knew this would be one more weight he would carry with him for the rest of his days. But he didnt regret his decision. Not one bit.

All happiness came with a price and Sawyer knew he had paid heavily for his.
