"The children are fine." She said to him, stroking his hair. "John's been watching them all night.. I'll call them soon.. but i'm not going anywhwere.." 

He smiled a little at what she'd said about the children.  "I did not think you would."  He said, gazing into her china blue eyes, the same eyes he was afraid he'd never see again.

she knew what he would say to that and shook her head again.She would call the children after they had had their breakfast (since it was morning and all) but for now she had no intention of going anywhere.

He watched her.  He wished she would go home and get some rest, but he also knew she wouldn't leave him.

"Don't look at me like that you know better than that." She said with a slight admonsshiment. "I'm fine too.. nothing a little nap and a shower won't help."

"I know."  He said softly.

She had so many things that she really wanted to say but she wanted to be alone with him. Some things were still private and emotional and when it came to this protected that privacy. She looked up and smiled at the others in the room.

Jack was hovering over Sayid as usual and Libby was standing by the door wondering just how long Shannon would put up with Jack.  She didn't have to wait too long.

"Can you guys.. umm leave us alone for a few minutes?" She asked them.

Jack was suprised by this as he checked Sayid's vitals.  "Uhm, what?"  He asked.

"I need a little.. time with him before you take him off any tests.." She looked back down at him and smiled.

"That's a good idea."  Libby said.  "I need to call John anyway."

"Alright."  Jack said.  "I suppose it can wait a while." 

Libby reached over and kissed Sayid's forehead.  "You get better."  She whispered.

"Thank you Libby." Sayid said weakly.

She put her finger over his lips.  "Shhh, no thanks are ever necessary."  She smiled.

"Come on Jack."  Libby said.  "Let's give 'em some quiet time." They walked out the door and Libby went to go call John and check on the children.

"Then I promise to get a little rest and something to eat baby ok?" 

"I want you to take care of yourself, Shannon."  He said.  He meant it more than he ever had before.  Tonight they'd had a taste of what it woulde be like if Sayid was not there anymore.

Once she had a moment alone she leaned over and kissed his face softly before leaning her forhead against his. She closed her eyes and took a deep shaky breath. it was slightly raspy to due to her not having her inhaler but it was a hospital she was sure she could get one later, for now it didn't really matter to her though.

"I was so scared I'd be.. here without you.." She whispered to him. "I don't think.. I could've done it..being without you.. I'd go crazy.."

"You will never be, my love."  He answered.  "I will always be with you...even if it is only in spirit." He placed his hand on her face.  "I love you so much."

It was true, without him next to her she wouldn't have been able to do anything but take care of the kids. Her own lonlieness and tormented memories would drive her crazy she knew. She needed him like air and the idea of not having him was terrifying to her.

"So don't you dare tell me to go hom.." She told him, just a little anrgily. "I'm right where I need to be right now.." She put her hands on his face and stared into his eyes. "And after scaring me like this.. you owe me.."

He laughed a little bit. "That is a debt I shall be happy to pay."  He said.

She sat in the chair and laid her head down next to him on the bed, trying to keep her tormented feelings and fears away. "I just.. really need to be here..don't.. tell me to leave..please..." 

"I will not."  He said.  "Please stay with me as long as you wish."  Sayid brought her hand to his lips and kissed it softly.

He watched her as she laid her head next to his face.  "I feel there is so much we need to discuss."  He said.  "I feel as though there are things we should say to each other if and instance such as this should happen again."

He didn't know if she felt the same way, but he did.  Perhaps there was nothing to say, and perhaps there were many things to say, either way he wanted her to know how deeply he loved her and the children.

"You know that I will always find you, do you not?"  He asked.  "Even in the life to follow this one, I will always find my way to you."

ooc:  I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get this done Patti.  I've been up in East Texas so much and internet access is limited at best up there.

She picked up his hand again and took a deep breath, trying to not be ovious about how scared she'd been of that very thing. But her emotions were hard to hide and she knew even in the state he was in he could see it clearly.

Sayid raised his hand and placed it on her face.  "What is it?"  He asked.  "I can tell there is something on your mind."

"You always say i'm so strong.. so brave.." She said softly, looking at his  fingers as she played with them. "I'm not..trust me..cause without you to hold me up...I'd have collapsed under the wieth of things a long time agao.." 

"You are strong my love, you have always been."  Sayid said. "I promise you that you will never have to be without me, but I am also certain that you would carry on, if only for the sake of the children."  He winced a little as he moved his hand down her cheek.

She felt that was as close to being completly honest as she felt at the time. Truth was she didn't feel as strong or brave as people had told her she was. Or even as completly honest as she could be. Being scared to lose him had sprung up alot of old painful things and it made her feel weighed down and week.

"There are times when.. I.. feel like i'm just gonna fall apart.." She confessed, just sitting there trying not to cry.

He gazed into her eyes as she spoke.

"There's things in me..that weigh me down and hurt..  and I know you don't want me to hurt.. but I still do.. I wish I didn't.."

He knew there was no need for him to say anything at this moment.  Right now it was just about listening to her and letting her get these feelings she had out.

She took a shaky breath and let it out. "There are ghosts and without you around to.. .keep them away.. they'll keep coming back.." She in a whispere. "And I get scared..really scared.."

He watched her as she continued to speak.  He wrapped her hand in his and caressed her fingers.

Feeling it was childish to think she was afraid of the dark, or being alone even though she had reasons to be. Things she wanted to talk about, but still had trouble finding the words. Getting this close to losing him again had really unhinged her, and let those capering demons move a little closer to the surface.She laid her head back down on his arm and tried to just draw from him like she always did.

"I just need you so much.." She said barely above a whisper. "I can't.. be without you.. I just can't.."

"You will never be without me, my love."  Sayid said.  He raised her chin to look at him.  "I cannot promise you that I will love you for the rest of your life."  He said.  "But I can promise that I will love you for the rest of mine."

He had turned a little onto his side but turned onto his back a little so that his shoulder would hurt less.  "I am sorry, but I am still in some pain."  He said. The truth was he was in terrible pain and very tired but there was no way he was going to tell her that.

He looked around him at all the equipment that he was attached to and all the monitors and computers.  "Jack certainly went to a lot of trouble to keep watch over me."  He said.  "Of course Jack is very thorough. He is an excellent physician."

He wanted to try to keep things light and thought perhaps if he did it would make Shannon less worried, but he also knew that it wasn't very possible for her to be less worried.  They lived for each other and in all honesty if it were her in this position, Sayid knew that whoever had done would already be dead.

Finally, he had no choice.  The pain had gotten entirely too intense.  "My love, do you think it would be possible to obtain some pain medication for me?"  He asked.  He hated to ask her because he always wanted to be so strong for her and the children, but the pain was bad and he actually began to feel light headed.

"Perhaps you should call for Jack."  Sayid said, his voice faltering a bit.

Sayid nodded weakly as he watched Shannon leave.

She ran out the door to the nurses's station nearby, not meaning to make it look like a horrendous emergency she was just worried about him.

The nurse looked up as she heard Shannon coming toward her.  She put her pen down.  "Yes, mum?"  She said in a thick Cockney accent.  "Somethin' I can do for ya?" 

"Can you get Dr. Sheppard please?" She asked, a little breathlessly. "My husbands in pain and needs more medicine, or something.. anything.." She looked around around the quiet, mid-morning hospital. "If he's not here call him please.. tell him he's in pain."

"Yes, mum, he's here."  She said.  "I'll page him." The nurse picked up the phone and had the hotel operator call Jack's pager.

She went back into the room, and went to his bed, storking his hair lightly. "He's on his way.." She whispered. "Soon.."

"Thank you my love." Sayid said quietly.  He was really hurting and the pain was sharp and wouldn't go away.

Truth is, she felt a little tired and out of breath herself, wishing she'd brought her inhaler with her, but she'd been so worried and pre-occupied that she forgot to grab it. Being tired didn't help either, but she did her best to regulate the breathing. Sitting down weakly in the chair she rubbed her head, feeling like she was gonna cry or pass out . One or the other, So she tried to distract herself until Jack go there.

"Maybe later.. I can call home and talk to the kids.." She said thoughtfully. "I'm sure they've already had breakfast and all... probably miss their daddy.." She smiled at him, playing with his fingers now. "That would be.. nice wouldn't it?"

"It would be very nice."  He answered.  "I would love to talk with them."

She laid her head down next to his hand, closing her eyes, breathing unevenlly. "Just.. think of home.. of the kids.." She whispered softly. "and everything will be...fine.."

And she was so tired she fell into a restless nap that would only be interrupted by Jacks arrival. Which was sooner rather than later.

"I know my love."  Sayid said.  "I just wish it was right now."

Just then, Jack walked in calmly pulling a syringe out of his jacket pocket.  "I think we should take the edge off that pain."  He said.

"You look good Sayid."  Jack said.

"I beg to differ, Jack."  Sayid said.

"You're actually doing pretty well."  Jack said.  "Your vitals are good and your heart took this really well.  You're gonna be just fine. We just have to manage your pain."

Sayid squeezed Shannon's hand as Jack talked. "I'm going to give you some Morphine.  You're not allergic to it and it'll stop the pain for a few hours and give you a chance to get some sleep."

Jack administered the Morphine drip.  "There you go.  I'm going back to my hotel for a few hours.  I'll see you both a little later."  Jack patted Shannon on her shoulder and kissed her cheek.  "Don't worry buddy, you're gonna be just fine."

About a month later, she woke up in their bed, shaking off a another nightmare. She was a bit sick of them, they'd become regular bed-mates lately it seemed. She turned to look at the clock, and it was still real early. The kids probably weren't even up yet. Then she turned and curled back into his arms, snuggling back into his warmth.

Sayid shifted a little and tightened his arms around her.  He didn't  say anything but he knew when she had these nightmares, so much so that he could tell when she what she was going through and he held her tight, silently letting her know that he was there and he was by her side through whatever she had to deal with.

She hoped he was already cause she didn't want to wake him. He'd been spending the better part of this month recovering from his injury and as far as she was concerned he needed to keep getting his rest. That she herself needed it wasn't as important to her as taking care of him and the kids. But she was exhausted. She wouldn't tell him that but swas sure he already knew.

"Of course I am." Sayid said.  "You know I cannot sleep if you are not sleeping." He kissed the side of her forehead and squeezed her.  "Are you alright, my love?"

"Had a bad dream.." She  told him, snuggling against him.

"Again?"  He asked, wishing she didn't have to go through this at all.

"yes again.." She shook her head. "I don't know why..I've had them so much lately.. just have.."

"I am sorry."  He said.  He wished he had an answer for her and wished there was something more he could do for her, but he couldn't.  "I don't like that you must go through that, and I especially do not like that you must go through it alone."

She smiled a little tiredly. "Don't worry about me baby.. I'm fine.."" she said, wrapping her arm around him. "I'm perfectly fine.."

He didn't persue it any further, but he did know something he could do for her to help take the pain away and make her feel closer to him.

Well maybe not exactly, but she wasn't gonna let him worry about her, she could handle whatever issuse she was having. She just wanted to take care of him, it was all that mattered to her. She put her hand on his shoulder and shook a finger at him. "Just make sure to be careful..cause your personal nurse says you shouldn't.. strain yourself too much." She grinned. "Doctors orders.." 

"Oh I am quite certain no harm will come to me in your capable hands."  Sayid teased.
