Welcome Home

Chapter 1

Kate and Sawyer were now in a new home, at a new place they could call home. And with the baby on the way, their new life had they just started was going to be quite different from what they knew before.

Kate was feeling better now. She had some dizziness every now and then, but nothing really to worry about. One of the rooms of their new home was for the baby. It was the closest room to theirs. She didn't talk to Sawyer much about it, but she was in the room almost all day. Sawyer didn't know what was going on in the room, or what she was doing. The only thing he knew about was when she gave him a list of things she needed for the room like paint or furniture.

Sawyer used to go once a week to the nearest town for supplies, leaving in the morning and arriving around 3:00 pm. Kate always had lunch ready for him. They used to have lunch together after the work they were doing in the morning. Kate worked inside, painting or just decorating. She was really into interior design; she always thought she could that for living if her life would have been different, but life wanted something different for her. And now one of her dreams came true. She was doing this for their home, for the baby.

Sawyer, on the other hand, worked outside all morning, usually chopping wood, which he sold to the farms nearby. Other times, he would work in the garage, trying to make some furniture himself, but it was more like a hobby for him. He was working on a swing set for the porch at that moment. But the real money came from the mine. He invested some of the money in it; while Mark, Alicia's husband, did all the business in the cities nearby.
Everything was fine.

A few weeks after they arrived at the new place, Kate's belly had started to show. Sawyer only noticed that when she was getting ready to go the bathroom and she wore one of his shirts to sleep in, but he didn't want to say anything out of fear that she would think he was calling her fat.

He finally finished the swing and he was hanging it when suddenly he heart Kate calling for him.

"Sawyer, hurry, come here, hurry!"

Holy Sh*t, he thought. Something must be wrong. She had never called him like that before, not since they were safe. He ran in such a hurry, he let go of the swing, the tools, everything.

Kate stood outside the baby's room, with her hands on her belly. When he saw her, he totally freaked out, believing that something is wrong with the baby or Kate. He wondered how he was going to take her to the closest town, a 3 hour drive at least, to take her to a doctor, or a hospital, anything. He never would make it. When he finally was in front of her, she took one of his hands and rested it on her belly.

"Oh my God, WHAT? " he said, looking at her. She had a smile on her face, but wasn't looking at him; she had her eyes fixed on her belly, and their hands together on it. She looked like she was trying to concentrate on something.

"He's moving. I never felt anything like this before." She sounded amused by the situation, Sawyer not that much.

"You called me for that?" He sounded annoyed, even angry. He didn't feel anything at all.

"What?" She let go of his hand and pushed it away from her belly. She looked at him, without a word, then walked away from him and went straight to their bedroom.

He stayed there and turned his head to look at her. Damn, I think I did something, he thought, Son-of-a-bitch, Sawyer, you are a jerk. He waited for a moment and he went to their bedroom.
What he saw broke his heart, and yes, he knew he did say something he shouldn't have, and whatever that was, it made her cry. He had made her cry.

"Freckles?" he said, almost whispering. As she heard his voice, she tried to cover her face, hiding with the pillows. "Hey  Freckles "

"Get out of here," she said between sobs. "Leave me alone."

"Freckles I " He really wanted to say he was sorry for whatever he had done, but he didn't understand why that made her cry.

"Don't  I won't call you again for anything."
she said, not looking at him, but he could tell that she was mad about it. She was sad before, and now angry? Is that normal? He thought. He couldn't help it anymore, he sat next to her, and she even made room for him, and let him sit next to her. He pulled her into his arms. She resisted a little at first, but then she just let herself go, and he felt her tears on his shirt.

"Easy, easy baby, easy, it's alright, I really didn't mean it, you know." He was really worried, although he still didn't know what he said to make her feel like that. He didn't want to make the same mistake twice, and he really wanted to know what happened. "Freckles, I'm I didn't "

She could understand he was probably trying to say sorry, but she didn't want him to say sorry for something when he didn't even know what he was apologizing for.

"I called you because I felt him moving, for the first time. I never felt him moving like that, and I didn't want you to miss it," she said in between sobs. He tried to swallow the words she just said, and yeah, he now felt like a real jerk. That's probably something women wanted for themselves to feel, but Kate did want him to feel it too. He knew he was in trouble now.

He was going to tell her the truth. "Kate, I thought there was something something wrong with you or the baby." he said, worried. She looked at him. "We are so far from any town, if something bad happens to you now, you never, we never I'm " He was trying to contain his terror of the idea of losing her, or losing the baby, but like she knew what he wanted to say, as she read his mind, he read hers "to losing you both."She didn't need any more explanation; she didn't want to hear anymore. She kissed him.

She just wanted to stay there with him, in bed, just hoping she could feel the baby move again and let him feel it too. She was so exhausted with all the work she was doing on the baby's room, and this fight with Sawyer, that she felt asleep, right there in his arms. If the baby would move again she wouldn't even bother to say anything. She just wanted to sleep.

Sawyer wasn't that tired. He usually went to bed a few hours after Kate did, since she was pregnant, she was more tired and slept more than usual. He wondered if that was normal, and he had so many questions and concerns about that subject, clearly he didn't know much about it. The next time he would go to town he decided he would buy a pregnancy book to find out more. Funny that never crossed his mind before, reading about pregnancy. He liked to read but would he like to read about that? Too many worries for one night. Tonight he wanted to stay there with her, probably just wait for her to fall asleep. Then he would go and pick up the mess he left on the porch.

The next morning when Kate woke up, she found a nice surprise. There was a tray with one of her new favorite breakfasts - chocolate chip pancakes, and some wildflowers in a vase on the nightstand. She smiled as soon as she saw it. The next thing she heard was a knock at the door and someone opened it..

"Morning." It was Sawyer.

"Morning breakfast in bed??" she asked, surprised.
"Yeah, I think I own you one."He spoke shyly, adding, "For what I"

"I love you."

Damn, she is adorable. After what I did yesterday she told me she loves me, he thought. He didn't have anything to say. He sat next to her and kissed her.

She stopped the kiss, even though the thought of pre-breakfast sex was tempting, she was really hungry, because she hadn't eaten dinner last night.

"I can't believe you didn't burn them," she teased him.

"Well Freckles, what can I say, I'm getting better."

"Really?" She didn't really believe it.

"No, those are from the second batch, the first one I burned them all." He was ashamed for it. That made him even more adorable.

"Well you are getting better indeed. You just burned the first batch, and last week you tried like 4 times." She was laughing as she caressed his face. He didn't have a reply for that so he just kissed her again, this time with more passion.

"Hey I have another surprise for ya." He had a grin on his face.

"Oh you do? Wait, 'cause first I need to go to pee."

"You are so romantic, sweet cheeks."

"I learned from the best." She got out of bed and before going to the bathroom she leaned over to give him one little kiss.

"I'll wait for you downstairs."

"Fine," he heard Kate reply from the bathroom. After a few minutes, Kate was walking downstairs, and Sawyer, like her prince, was waiting for her.

"Come, but don't look."

"I won't."Sawyer helped Kate walk to the porch of the house.

"Don't peek," he insisted.

"I won't."She was getting a little angry.

"Ok, now, open your eyes."

She opened her eyes, and what she saw make her feel even more at home than ever.

Holding her from behind with his hand on her shoulders, he said, "I made it for you." He could feel she was starting to cry, but she was happy.

"A swing we have a swing."

"Yeah."

"Thanks." She rested her head on his shoulder and he had his hand on her belly. Like a mutual agreement, without using words they both had a seat on the swing. They stayed there quite for a while, just happy to be with each other. Sawyer rested his hands on her belly, she put her own on top of his, threading their fingers together. But the silence didn't last long. Sawyer really needed to ask her a question.

"Freckles?"

"Yeah,"she sounded sleepy.

"You said, umh yesterday when the baby was moving, you said him, do you think it is a boy?"

"I don't know, but I think it is weird to keep referring to the baby as it, you know, but I don't know." She sounded sad to not know if there was a boy or a girl growing inside her.

"Well you have an appointment with the doctor next week. Maybe he will tell us if it's a boy, or a girl." It was really hard for Sawyer to say the word girl. Maybe he really wanted to have a baby girl, but he didn't want to say anything to Kate.

The swing was an amazing gift. Kate stayed almost all day out there swinging slowly, going inside just to use the bathroom, or cook lunch and dinner, and every now or then to get some snack for her or for Sawyer, but most of the time it was for her.

For a week she completely forgot what she was doing in the nursery room. She had to, because she knew she was doing all that without knowing if the room's new resident was going to be a boy or a girl. But today they were going to town. Her appointment was today, and she wanted to know how everything was with her pregnancy and the baby, and she really wanted to know if it was a boy or a girl.
