Chapter 11

The sound of her voice rang through his ears. Sawyer had to do a double take to make sure it was really Kate who spoke. He couldnt beleive it. Total and utter shock. The man Sawyer had wanted to kill a few minutes earlier was Kates father? Sawyers breathing became irratic. Conflicted because he wanted to see the Son of a bitch suffer the way he had suffered all these years. If this man hadnt pushed his father on his mother and her affair, they both might still be alive today. And then Kate approached her eyes pleading with her fathers, completely sidestepping Sawyer, avoiding his questioning stare, looking like a lost little girl as she came inbetween the 2 men and threw her arms around her father. A million jumbled thoughts ran through Sawyers mind. Part of him wanted to yell at Kate, tear her out of this mans arms, and finish the job he started, and the other part of him wanted to drill her father into the ground with questions about the past he shared with Kate and his own parents apparently. He was leaning more towards the first option when Kate finally let go of her father and asked...

"How did you get here? (she took a minute to let everything set in, realizing what she just witnessed she looked back at Sawyer who wasnt giving an inch in his hard cold stare towards her father, a questioning gaze again at Sam) What happened? (back to Sawyer) Do you two know eachother?"

Sawyer irritated with both of them now, wasnt gonna let him weasle out with a vague explanation. If this man had something to do with everything and why they were here he was gonna make sure he came clean. A chilling stare in Sams direction and a mocking tone...

"Yeah Daddy! Why dont you tell her the little story you just told me."

Sam shook his head and glared at Sawyer a hint of annoyance and then it was gone as the slight glint of deceipt returned to his eyes, not wanting to he began...

"Well Katherine, I was just telling your boyfriend James how I knew his parents, and before he attacked me, I was about to tell him how sorry I was when I found out what happened to them."

Kate looked back at Sawyer feeling remorseful again, a melancholy stare. Sawyer spat back..

"You lying sack of shit!!!" Kate interrupted yelling his name "Sawyer!", Sawyer ignored her glaring back at Sam..."You think Im stupid? You think shes stupid? Tell her the truth...Sam!!!"

His name rolled of Sawyers tongue like he was no stranger. Sawyer finally remembered this mans name. It was Sam Austen. Gong back in his mind he recalled seeing him from time to time with his daddy out by the garage having a beer, and they would afterwards head to the local bar for something harder. He was his fathers drinking buddy. Who conveniently left town after James Ford Sr. offed himself and his wife, leaving behind their 8 year old son, James Jr. Sawyer looked at Kate now, not sure how to feel or what to think of her. She was raised by this backstabber, who most likely pushed his father over the edge. It suddenly all made sense. Why Kate was the way she was. Sawyer backed away from them both. Eyes narrowed. He felt like he couldnt trust anyone anymore. No one was who they appeared to be, it was all too much.

Kate was watching Sawyer carefully now. It was strange to hear her father call him James. A name he tried so hard to keep from her and everyone. A beautiful name. But it was more than just agitation on his mind this time. He was pulling away. She felt that familar feeling of judgement, that she had never expected to feel from Sawyer. It made her question him and her father. Kate turned to Sam now, her eyes fearful that she wasnt gonna like what she was about to hear. Wanting him to tell her everything was alright now, her eyes pleaded with him..

"Daddy?"

Sam glanced at Kate first a hint of sadness flashed across his face and then his gaze met Sawyer's, who looked like he wanted to kill him. Sam began...

"Katie! Your both here for a reason. James was brought here for his own purpose (Sawyer stood up a little straigter listening to the man carefully now) and you were brought here cause of me. (Kate looked at him horrified, Sam met her stare..) Now here me out Katherine...When you killed Wayne, you left behind a path of destruction. (he reminded her) You killed your father! You killed your best friend! (Sawyer looked at Kate a little more surprised.) You robbed a bank and put innocent civilians at risk. (Kate looked back at Sawyer briefly feeling helpless again, and then to her father, tears beginning to run down her face, remembering all that she did, Sam paused for a second and continued.) My intention here was not to make you relive this, but to make you forget it. James knows about the letter. (Sawyer caught Kate steel a glance towards him, he could see that she was crying. He wanted so badly to go to her, but he couldnt, his feet remained still) You see, I think your experience here has softened your heart. I think James has helped you come to terms with who you are and what you did. And the brilliance of our magnetic technology is that you can take away the lessons without having the memories. (Kate looked up, mouth set agape for a moment, a million thoughts running through her head, wondering if Sam really wanted her to do this, looking at him with a hint of anger now, realizing that he indeed did, feeling like she would never be good enough for him, Sam continued.) We are offering you a second chance here Kate. Both you and James. If you allow us to continue with cooperation, in order to erase your memories to the point before boarding that plane, you can have your freedom. (A stern look cast at Sawyer and then Kate) You have my word."

Kate gasped. Sawyer stood behind her with parched lip. Both of them were speechless. Sam knew that he had to get them to both willingly agree to this or the memory transplant would never work. He played his cards very carefully and watched them both. Sam looked back at Zeke who nodded his head. Sawyer narrowed his eyes not sure what to make of all this.. Stepping closer to Sam..

"How do we know your not lyin? How do we know this isnt a game?"

Sam nodded his head in expectation of these questions. "Cause we let your freind Michael and his son Walter go free..."

Sawyer shook his head. Angrily retorting...

"But Mike never lost his memory, why cant we just shang hai on outtahere like he did???"

Sam closed his eyes breifly and looked at Sawyer. He was worried Sawyer could see thorough him. It was just like Kate to pick such a difficult man.

"Because Michael will never mention this place again. He is a man of his word. And if he does, he has more to lose than just his son."

Sawyer met Sams challenging stare now. Kate looked at her father confused. She spoke...

"So why did you bother bringing all 3 of us in and letting Jack and I go, if you just wanted to release us in the first place?"

Sam looked at Kate a brief smile and then it was gone. Shifting his weight. He explained...

"Dont underestimate us Katherine. We know far more than you think we do...(Shifting his weight) Aside from knowing where you all are at every minute with the exception of a few places we know how you feel about eachother. (nodding towards Sawyer with his head) He was a test. When James here selflessly exchanged places with his pal Jack, we knew he was ready."

Sam looked at Zeke and Zeke nodded, mumbling...

"I really did think Jack was our boy"

A breif smirk towards Sawyer.

Sawyer was watching them all with a tigers stare, ready to pounce, defensive and agitated for being treated like a lab rat and for the russian roulette game they were playing with him and Kate. Sam continued...

"We always knew you were ready Kate, and the fact that you and James were more than friends, we thought would help our cause. The letter was planted to divide you up. You see we knew if you were held in separate rooms that both of you would fight like tigers with us till you found one another. So this way you would divide willingly. Except that didnt work. We didnt count on your vulnerabilities with one another. (A long pause) Which brings me to now...Didnt I always tell you Katie, that honesty is the best policy? (Kate looked at him with disbeleif, she couldnt beleive this was the same man she had looked up to all these years the same man she spent her childhood tracking and hunting with through woodlands.) So here I am, telling you the truth. You know what you did, you know why your here, and we are offering you the chance to start over again."

Kate looked back at Sawyer whos face was just as unreadable as her own, he was thinking and thinking hard. She never expected this in a million years. And of all the people in the world, Sam Austen was the last one, she ever thought would make her chose. She wanted so desperately to reach out to Sawyer, but couldnt help but mull over what it looked like her father was offering them. Kate weighed out the choices in her mind and the conseqences, finally piping up, needing confirmation...

"So we wont remember anything from this island, the crash, the deaths, the people, nothing???"

Sam made an odd noise in the back of his throat and then met her gaze.

"No Kate, you wont remember any of it. You wont know James and he wont know you, but youll have a chance to start over, as will he, and youll have your freedom--no more running Kate."

Kates eyes started to brim over again. He was offering her what she had wanted for so long. That release from these invsible binds across her body. She knew that this in some strange way could give her peace, but there was one thing still holding her back, one person--Sawyer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack and Sayid had convinced Alex to come with them to get the dynamite. When they got back, they would rescue Sawyer and Kate. Alex apprehensive at first finally agreed when Sayid told her a little about her mother, Danielle Rousseau. The girl never thought in a million years that her mom could still be alive, let alone, still living on this very island. She hoped this wasnt a trap, but hope was the only thing she had, and something in Sayids eyes told her she could trust him. They made camp just on the outskirts of the Black Rock in the dark territory, planning to take the dynamite back with them in the morning.

Chapter 12

Sam looked to Kate, who was still in deep thought. They didnt have much time and he needed to get her cooperation as soon as possible. He knew this decision would either make or break their plans for them, which is why he had to tread very carefully. With her cooperation, James would also surrender to them, and they could get started on the experiment. Waiting for her to meet his gaze, Sam asked her...

"So Katherine, whats it gonna be? Are you ready to go back home now?"

Sawyer looked at Kate and he could see the hurt in her eyes. She looked like a lost little girl. His eyes shared some of that same pain. He didnt want to lose her. He knew that now, he knew that he loved this woman. After all the cruel things she said and did to him and what he did to her, and after hearing the crimes she committed, he knew it had to be love. Only love could make him hurt so much for her. This broken girl, was his other half. He couldnt imagine living a life without her. He could bear the torture of remembering what hed done if he had her with him. Kate stole a glance at Sawyer. The lights were playing tricks on him, and he could imagine her as a little girl, smiling and happy and carefree, before all this chaos. Zeke cleared his throat however, and then he came back to the present reality and the woman standing here before him wasnt that little girl anymore, he saw her pain, and he knew even he couldnt take that away. It had run too deep. If she could forget it all, and forget him maybe she could have that second chance for happiness. Looking down at the floor now, he didnt think he could give her the true happiness that she deserved, not when he was so broken himself. As much as it pained him to think of it, Sawyer closed his eyes once before opening them to look at Sam. He knew what he had to do now. Pausing for a second before he spoke, soft voice, his words pierced the deafening air...

"Well that sounds like a plan to me."

Kate deep in thought was coerced out of it by that familiar voice that she felt most at home with. The sound echoed in her head as she met Sawyers gaze, actually hearing his words now, coming to the realization of what he had just said. Feeling like a door had been slammed in her face. Kates mouth now partially agape again, her eyes questioning his. Feeling like she had just been hit in the stomach, a pit forming, she placed a hand over her belly feeling her muscles tense up, the shock hit her to her core, taking him all in, trying to search his face for any sign, any signal. But there was nothing. Sawyers poker stare met Kates pleading face now. She wanted to say No. The words were this close to leaving her lips when Sawyer had decided to pipe in. She wanted to fight, but without Sawyer by her side, that option seemed obsolute. Kates breathing became irratic. A jumble of thoughts running through her head. He didnt love me? He didnt want to remember me? She was sure hed felt something more. Or maybe it was just her mind playing tricks on her. Someone like Sawyer couldnt love anyone. Of all the pain she had felt in her life this was the worst. She was crying again. Kate wanted to punch Sawyer and kiss him all in the same instant. But they had been through too much together. Maybe they really were toxic for one another? Too much hurt and pain on both sides. She knew about Sawyers past as well and how he tried to carry the burden of his parents deaths on his shoulders. Kate was sure Sawyer blamed himself for that. And for the man that he killed. So much pain, so much trauma. She was so sad for him and a melancholy expression fell across her face a she thought about losing him, she felt so small. How could he do this? Why? (shock turning to anger) I was stupid to think that I could love him and he might love me back. How could I have been so stupid??? Kate wiped the tears from her face, pulling herself together, and glared at Sawyer feeling like he had sold her out, demanding his attention. Her face grew hard, narrowing her eyes, a dry cold tone as she spoke...

"Thats fine with me."

She turned her head to look at Sam now. Standing up a little straighter. An air of chilliness filled the room. She nodded at him.

"Lets get this started then, I want to go home."

Sam nodded his head. Sawyer wanted so desperately to go to her and take Kate in his arms. To tell both these men to go to hell, but he knew what he was doing was right, he had to hurt her to help her. But why did it hurt so much? This was worse then getting shot, stabbed, and tortured all at once. Sawyer didnt see any other option.

Sam approached Kate and Sawyer took one last glance at her as Zeke began to escort him out of the room. Kate followed and watched Sawyer walk away from her as both of them were pulled in opposite directions. Neither of them put up a fight. The kindof pain they were about to feel was nothing compared to what they were feeling at that moment. Both of them welcomed the chair. Anything to make it stop. Anything.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first rays of light had pierced through the canopy overhead and Jack, Sayid, and Alex began to stir from their slumber. Jack kept an eye on Alex while Sayid went in to get the dynamite. Once Sayid returned with his back pack and person still in tact they headed back towards the lair. Jack wanted to get Kate and Sawyer out of there as soon as possible. He didnt like the fact that the Others had their people. Every time they had come in contact with them, somebody died. Not on his watch. He was done taking orders from these martyrs. This wasnt thier damn island, this was everyones island, and he didnt want to deal with any more of their crap. Headstrong and in the lead, Jack moved at a quick pace. Sayid shouted back after Jack once they were about halfway back.

"Jack, Jack, we have to get the map!"

Jack was confused for a brief moment and then he recalled, the map Sawyer had found before they were all hit with the darts. He had told Sayid about it the previous day. Wishing they could just keep moving but realizing the map would probably be useful he paused for a minunte. "Fine" He stepped back, passing Sayid and led the way to the pile of notebooks.

They had to do some sifting but Sayid finally found the map tucked in between two plastic cylinders. Jack had his backpack slung over his shoulders again and Sayid was about to unfold the paper and take a look, when they were interrupted by a voice...

"I told you he was one of them, didnt I?"

It was a distinguished voice and Sayid knew instantly who it was when he turned around, he spoke her name, "Rousseau!" Danielle gazed smugly and surveyed the two men and young woman standing infront of her. Danielle stepped closer now her face growing serious again realizing why they were here, "They've taken another one of yours havent they?" Sayid and Jack nodded confirming the unspoken story inbetween them. Henry had indeed been one of them like Danielle had first pointed out. Danielle muttered more quietly now, voice trailing off, "I should have shot him when I had the chance." Sayid stepped closer to Danielle, who was clearly lost again in her own thoughts. He spoke quietly in order to get her attention. "Danielle?" She looked up at Sayid who's gaze had now turned to the young woman standing in between him and Jack. She stared at Danielle mystified and speechless. Danielle followed Sayids gaze to the girl. At first confused and not understanding who this girl was, thinking perhaps she could be an Other that they captured, and then the girls eyes met her own. Danielle stared back into the same shade of blue, which reflected in her own eyes. Danielle began to tear up as the realization hit her. She knew who this was now. For 16 years she had waited for this moment. Her hand shook a little as she covered her mouth hiding her disbeleif. She had to ask, she had to know..."Alex?"

Alex gasped and stepped closer feeling the instant bond with this woman. Her voice still shaky, she needed confirmation of her own, "Mother?" A tear ran down Danielles face and she nodded, closing the gap in between them, enclosing Alex in a crushing hug. Never wanting to let go, ever again. Both of them were crying now and Danielle muttered into Alex's hair, "I never gave up hope that I would find you again, I never stopped looking!" Alex clung tighter to her mother.

Jack felt like he was intruding on this private reunion between mother and daughter. But seeing Danielle reunited with Alex gave him some understanding of how Michael must have felt when they took Walt. He wondered if some of Danielles team members died in her quest to find her missing daughter. To what lengths would a mother go? Perhaps the same distance as Michael? Or even further still? This had to stop! Whether Sayid was coming or not, Jack had to put an end to the Others reign on this island. They have been causing all this. They are the ones to blame. Looking determined now, Jack met Sayids gaze "Sayid! We gotta get going!" Sayid nodded to Jack and turned his attentions to Danielle and Alex. "Danielle?" Danielle was speaking quietly to Alex and did not hear Sayid. Sayid repeated her name, "Danielle?" She looked over at him now, Sayid continued.."Jack and I are going back for our friends...Can you return to our camp and find the Korean couple, Sun and Jin, and tell them to bring the boat back?" Danielle confused at first looked at Sayid, but she knew this was big deal. The urgency in Jack and Sayids eyes told her that they needed her help. Danielle answered Sayid with a "Yes," but she suspected that they werent telling her every thing, wondering if they were getting in over their heads. She owed him this favor though after what she did to him and complied, letting both men turn away. After they were a few paces off, Danielle called after Sayid.."Sayid?" Sayid and Jack both stopped in their tracks and looked back at Danielle, she continued... "be careful." Sayid nodded and turned back to face Jack. No words were neccessary as they made their way back to rescue Sawyer and Kate and take down The Others.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was Kates first time in the chair and they injected her with something to relax her muscles before turning the machine on. She heard a low humming noise and then clicking as it warmed up. As the chair warmed up, electrical probes were stuck to her forehead. The crank was turned up as she clenched her teeth expecting intense pain. She heard a loud crack and then another. Like an electrical current the shock waves moved through her body, feeling a tingling sensation now in her head. The shock was painful and as time progressed they got stronger and stronger. She wanted to escape to the black abyss of peace, but memories were running through her head in flashes--Wayne, the house, the Marshall, Diane, Sam, Tom, the Marshall, the plane crash, their first day on the island, Jack, the polar bear, Sawyer, the monster, the waterfall, I never, the horse, the kiss. She went back in her head to the kiss and those final lingering moments before they broke and looked into one anothers eyes. She saw Sawyer that day. The real man behind the mask. In her mind she was looking at him as if he was still kneeling right infront of her. She didnt want to close her eyes. If she closed them he would go away, but she was getting so sleepy, her eyelids were heavy and she fought against it. Whispering outloud "Sawyer...dont go." He shook his head with regret and then there was blackness. The tension through her body and the noise stopped completely. Kates eyes were closed, but she could hear all the commotion around her. Something dropped and clamoured on the floor and they were scurrying around now trying to find the source of the problem. Before Kate fell completely unconscoius she heard someone yell from somewhere outside the room, "the powers down in the whole building, we have a code red."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sawyer was being led by Zeke down a long narrow hallway. He hated the thought of Kate in that chair. He had to fight every fiber of his being to not break free of his binds, find Kate, and tear her away. But this was bigger than him. Her memories were tearing her apart inside. She deserved that second chance. Nonetheless Sawyer was still upset that they were dragging him around like a damn dog, the binds around his hands extending into a rope leash for Zeke. Even though he had been cooperative with them, they still were being pulled around like damn lab rats. Zeke grinned back at him and spoke, "I gotta hand it to you Son, that took some balls, what you did back there (pause) Im sure shell come to appreciate it in ti..." But before he could finish, Sawyer interrupted him, "Shut up!!!" Zeke smirked..."Fine Tex, suit yourself." Sawyer sneered after him envisioning taking that fake polyester beard of his off to get a clean shot at making his rope into a noose to put around the mans neck. He hoped atleast this anger that he felt would go away. And the hurt and pain. It was consuming him.

Just as they were about to turn the corner, all the lights went out. Sawyer looked around and noticed more people coming out into the hallway now. Zeke tied Sawyers rope around a door bar, meeting a man who had called him away. Sawyer was squinting to make the man out. At first he looked like a shadow, but as his eyes adjusted to the light he could see that it was Sam Austen. Sawyer immediately began busying himself with trying to get out of the ropes, but then he thought he should try and listen to what they were saying. They were just out of ear range and talking in hushed tones, but Sawyer crept closer. As people began to clear the hallway he could hear them. Sam was speaking...

"I dont think so Tom, it was a security breech... Weve gotta get them out of here...This could damage the entire experiment...The memory transplant will only work while shes in that state."

Sawyer looked around trying to get his bearings when it clicked for him. They were talking about Kate. A memory transplant? They werent gonna erase her memory, they were gonna give her a new one? Sawyer began working more quickly on his binds again when he noticed Zeke turn back around while Sam stepped away in the other direction. Sawyer stood up a little straighter and Zeke untied his end of the rope from the door. Looking back at Sawyer now...

"Guess theres been a change of plan kid, were getting out of here."

Zeke began to lead Sawyer away again, but this time he noticed that there was a bit more slack. Zeke scrunched his nose and turned around to face Sawyer, but within a split second Sawyer was behind him with the rope pulled around his neck. With clenched jaw he muttered into the mans ear...

"Yeah there's been a change of plan, yours sucked, terms of our contract agreement have expired Cotton eye Joe...Consider this payback for what you did to her."

And Zeke fell to the ground in a loud thud. Sawyer only had one thing on his mind--Find Kate.

Chapter 13

"Kate!" She could hear her voice being called from someplace close by, but she couldnt see him. All she could see was blackness. Her wrists and ankles had been loosened and untied and her body felt the gravity take over, head falling into her chest. Her name was being called again, louder "Kate?....Kate???" Now she couldnt ignore it any longer, her arm was being shaken, not allowing her to fall back into the dark catechisms of her mind. His voice continued to call her. Kate was stirring. She opened her groggy eyes slowly. The figure infront of her was blurry but as she focused in and recognized the man immediately--"Jack?"

Jack smiled breifly and nodded "Yeah Kate it's me" Kate feeling disoriented let Jack try to help her up. Jack needed Kate to come out of her haze..."Come on Kate, we dont have much time..Sayid shut the power down & we have to get out of here before he turns it back on." Kate was finally standing without Jacks help and she looked back at him confused..."You got the dynamite???" Jack nodded and replied, "Yeah we got it, and Sayid's put it all over the place so we got to get out...(louder) Now!!!" Jack bagan to head towards the door but stopped when he realized Kate wasnt following him. "Kate?" he called to her. But Kate just stood there. All the thought of that days events a jumble in her head. She met Jacks gaze now, first thoughts first "Where's Sawyer?" Jack sighed, his patience was wearing thin, they had to get out..."Sawyers gonna be fine...Sayid is getting him." Kate was releived, but just as quickly as relief had drawn across her face, an unwavering feeling of dissapointment took releifs place. She realized they had been unsuccessful in erasing her memory and now things had all gone terribly wrong. Kate looked at Jack now in different light. He wasnt here to help her, he was here to take her away from her saving grace. Muttering now, "We cant destroy them, they are our only chance of going home." Jack tried to grab her again, "Kate, your not thinking clearly now. We gotta get out of here. The only thing these people want to do is hurt us. You cant trust them...this is the only way we can ever be safe. (Kate shook from his grasp and Jack yelled commandingly at her.) Come on now! Lets go!" Kate looked at Jack now, realizing that he had no idea who these people were or what they had offered her. She knew she would have to handle this herself. Jack had already made up his mind. Sam was the only one who could save Kate now. She had to find her father. Jack saw Kates change in demeanor and took it as her change in opinion to side with him. He started to lead the way out the door and called after Kate, "you coming?" Kate lied, "Yeah," and she followed him out of the room and down the hallway. The lights came on all the sudden and Jack began to move faster. At the end of the hallway Jack took a left, Kate who was still behind him forked off to the right. She was heading back to the center of the building, towards the heart of the beast.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few minutes earlier....

Sayid had just unloaded his last stick of dynamite placing it strategically between the central power source, the radiator and a concrete support beam. Go for the heart of operations, Sayid thought to himself. Taking down the primary power source would lower their defenses for part 2 of his little plan. It was now or never. Zipping up his bag he slipped it back over his shoulders and headed out of the room. As he was passing through the doorway he collided with another. The sudden impact knocking him down on the floor. Sayid immediately pulled himself back up defenses ready. The other man had been knocked down as well and started to stand up. Sayid tried to get a good look at him, but it was pitch black here. He could barely find his way out of his place, and he had to find Sawyer too. Sayid didnt have time for this and drew his gun. But the voice cut him off, "you better be headin the other way asshole, cause Im not takin any prisoners!" Sayids mouth curved into a smile as he realized who he had just run into--Sawyer. Sayid put his gun back in his pants and retorted back to Sawyer in his thick Iraqi accent, "even if you tried, who says you could make me your prisoner?" Sawyer brought his head up trying to make out the figure infront of him, but he didnt have to. Hed recognize that accent anywhere. He never thought he would be happy to see a member of the Republican Guard, but he was happy for the bad lighting, which had hidden his obvious relief. "So Abdul....wheres the doc? You two finally decide to bring in the red beret?" Sayid couldnt help but smile at Sawyers new catch phrase and he stepped closer patting the man on the shoulder, "well its a bit more complicated than that Sawyer, but yes, the red beret is alive and well." Sawyer releived but not wanting to show it, covered his voice, trying to sound annoyed but failing, "Well Captain Falafel, what the hell took you so long? Weve been in here for damn near 3 days!" Sayid shook his head remembering again what he was in here for..."Listen...Sawyer, we have to get out of here..Ive got the place rigged." Sawyer was confused for a moment and then he realized what Sayid was doing--"Wait a minute..the blackout was your doing?" Sayid nodded and started walking. Sawyer followed him and Sayid replied, "Yes, it will buy us some time...As soon as I turn the power back on, this place will be on a short fuse timer to blow." Sawyer retorted back in step now with the man "Short fuse timer? (a pause) Are you actually suggesting that by merely turnin the power back on your gonna blow this place up? Guess you got a truckload of TNT, along with a bobcat, and 500 lighter fuses all in your back pocket then huh?--(sarcastically) Yeah, sounds like a brilliant plan to me!" Sayid couldnt help but role his eyes, now he remembered why he could only handle this man in small doses. Turning to Sawyer, "And now your all of the sudden an expert on dynamite?" Sawyer was getting ready to make a smart ass reply when Sayid cut him off, "It just so happens that you dont need a truckload of dynamite to take down this place. Not when our objective is to just make this place uninhabitable for them, by striking the main power source...which so happens to be powered by uranium. The chair you were put in..that was powered by Uranium...When uranium is exposed to oxygen, it causes extreme radiation, thus disengaging their facilities without wasting alot of dynamite. Hit them where it counts." Sawyer nodded his head, finally understanding what Sayid was getting at, but then going back in his mind Sawyer didnt miss a beat. Stopping Sayid in the hallway now. "How did you know I was in that chair?"

Sayid met the mans suspicious glare, explaining "Jack and I found a surveilance room, but it was just something from a tape we watched...." Sayid was about to continue when realization hit Sawyer. For the first time Sayid noticed worry on Sawyers face. Sawyer explained..."That chair thats powered by radon or whatever...Kates in that chair! (a hint of urgency now in his voice) We gotta get her out!" Sayid shook his head, "Dont worry, Jack is getting Kate (Sayid continued walking now, Sawyer a step behind) They will meet us outside (Sawyer stopped again and shook his head, he wasnt about to leave Kates fate in Jacks hands. Sayid noticed his pause, trying to reassess the situation) Sawyer! We dont have time for this..They will meet us out there." Sayid took a few more steps forward pausing briefly infront of a huge power generator. He pulled down the lever and the lights came back on. Sayid looked at Sawyer. "Come on, this will only buy us 5 to 10 minutes." Sawyer didnt want to leave here without knowing Kate was out safe and sound, but he had to trust that Jack would find and save her.

Chapter 14

Kate had nearly reached the end of her rope being in that chair, even for the short time she was, it took so much out of her emotionally and physically. She felt like she was running on empty and being pulled in 2 different directions. But the dire circumstances of coping with losing all hope of her freedom forever, Kate realized that she was forced to take the path she was on. Sawyer would have to wait. She trusted Sayid to get to Sawyer and pull him out of harms way, but things were so complicated now, and she had to fix it. She had to mend the tattered bonds with her father while she still had the chance. With no luck searching the corridors in her area, Kate decided to return back to the room with the chair. Perhaps Sam would go there to look for her. Moments later the lights came back on and Kate could see more clearly now. She backtracked to the location where she and Jack split up and then found the room at the end of the hallway. Kate stepped in and looked around. Remembering the moment when she came in here and found Sawyer slumped over in that very same chair. It made her sad and angry to see him in that broken state. Her lion hurt and beaten down. And then she went up to the chair and stroked the chair arm. Distraught and torn over her loss of Sawyer, but wondering to herself now if all hope was lost. Was she destined to be trapped on this island forever with a man who didnt love her? No hope for return. Her life as she knew it was gone. Everything she had was taken from her. Perhaps even if she didnt find Sam, she would stay in this room. Maybe death was the only place she could be at peace?

Interrupted by her dark thoughts, Kate heard someone clear their thoat behind her. She turned around to find Sam standing there. He was silent for a moment and then Kate broke the silence frustrated with him.."Why did you do all this? (pausing for a moment, waiting for his response, and when he didnt answer she continued drilling him) Why did you bring me here after all this time? Why Sawyer? Why all the mind games? Why not just turn me over to a maximum security federal prison somewhere? (angry now, she spat out the last part )Wouldnt that be easier than having to 'deal' with me yourself???" Sam remained silent, but finally broke when he met Kates pleading eyes, sighing now..."Because....I had to save you Kate! I had to understand your motives for doing what you did. If you had continued on the self-destructive path you were on, you would have died." Kate shook her head, a small snort of her own..."You dont think I came close to dying here once or twice??? (She raised her eyebrows for a moment and then narrowed them, sneering) In a place like this, death is what we all hope for. After what you did, and what your people did, and living with the memory of what happened to all our dead, and the hopelessness of no escape, and no peace, death is a gift! (looking him in the eye now) Do you know what it feels like Sam to watch the people you love and care about fall away from you right before your very eyes? I didnt sign up for this like you did!!!" Sam stood up a little straigter, a stern glance towards Kate, his eyes assured and cold..."Imagine getting lectured on the value of human life from a killer herself?" Kates eyes flinched and she felt that familiar wave of guilt that went along with the pit in her stomach. She was retreating back again, but she caught herself this time. She wasnt gonna let him back her into a corner like he always did. She felt and air of confidence wash over and an inner strength come forward that she didnt consciously know she had before... "Are you always gonna see me as a murderer dad, Have you mourned the death of your daughter. Have you already said your silent goodbyes to me???" Sam's gaze wavered and for a brief moment and Kate thought she saw that man she once knew. The man she thought had loved her unconditionally. But Sam just shook his head, not giving her a direct answer, instead, made her an offer..."You can still be a good person Kate, you just have to make the right choice. Come with me now and Ill make sure you get that second chance.."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sayid and Sawyer were making their way down the hallway that turned into the main one, which led to the entrance. They were almost out now. As they were nearing the double doors, Jack came running up behind them breathless. Sayid was releived to see Jack. And Sawyer watched and waited for a second, but he didnt see her, looking to Jack now, he asked..."Where's Kate?" Jack was confused for a moment and then looked behind him, realizing the same thing Sawyer had--that Kate was not with him. Jack put his hands on his knees trying to catch his breath, trying to recollect..."She was right behind me a few minutes ago. Back in that other hallway..."His voice trailed off and Sawyers anger flared up, getting in his face now "Goddamit Jack!" Sawyer shook his head and looked back at Sayid, worry now apparent on the mans face..."Im going back in after her!" Sayid shook his head not wanting Sawyer to go back in, they only had a few minutes before everything would be destroyed...But in the split second it took him to open his mouth in objection, Sawyer had already taken off back down into the facility. Sayid called after him anyway hoping he would hear..."Sawyer..5 minutes!" Sawyer was running now down the corridor and he heard Sayids voice trail off behind him '5 minutes!' Sawyer knew he didnt have much time and went to the place he recalled them taking her last, praying for some miracle that Kate would still be there, unharmed and alive.

Stumbling into the room now Sawyer found Kate standing across from Sam next to the chair. They were in the heat of an argument and Kate looked very emotional. Sawyer felt like he was interrupting something, but he didnt care. Barging inside he made his prescence known, calling to her..."Kate!" Kate looked back at Sawyer now, she was surprised to see him and Sawyer noticed her cloudy eyes. She was okay, thats all that mattered. Sawyer stepped closer and took her hand, his voice a bit calmer now, feeling like he was walking on eggshells, eyes pleading with Kates, hoping he wasnt already too late, Sawyer met her gaze..."Kate..Baby...we gotta go...this place is going to blow in a minute." Kate looked back at Sam whos eyes were on Sawyer and then he looked at Kate. Sam tried to rationalize with her..."Kate this is your last chance to go home." Sawyer sneered looking angrily at Sam..."Dont listen to him Kate...He's lying, whatever he's told you he can do, its a lie...They want to replace your memory not erase it." Kate was so conflicted, she wanted to beleive Sawyer, but her father was someone she thought she could trust. Sam shook his head..."I already put my cards on the table Kate, take it or leave it..." Kate looked at Sam, she was rapidly crumbling apart now, she felt like a little girl again, a single tear running down her face, would he leave her here? Her eyes pleaded with his..."Daddy?"

Sawyer felt like Kate was slipping away from him. He had to make her listen, whether she wanted to or not. Sawyer spinned Kate around pulling her closer to him. The clock was ticking and he had to get her out of here if it was the last thing he did. He would have to put his cards on the table too. Kates eyes were all glossed over and Sawyer looked down at her, having trouble getting it out he spoke to her in a soft voice..."Freckles...please..we dont have time...Sayid's got the place rigged and they are waiting for us outside (grabbing her other hand now) I want you to come with me!" Kate was still conflicted and looked down at the floor. She kept thinking of everything she would lose if she went with Sawyer. He was just coming here now out of guilt. It wasnt anything more than him trying to do the right thing. Something she so desperately wanted for herself. Sawyer let go of her hand and pried her chin up so she was forced to look at him. He had to tell her, or he would lose her forever..."Kate! (her eye finally focused in on his) ....I love you! (green eyes searching his, Sawyer nodded his head, a slight smirk now, he swallowed thinking hed either live to regret this moment for the rest of his life, or it woul change him forever, trying to sound angry, but unsuccesful) Yeah, I realized, after putting up with your hypocracy, your beligerance, your constant nagging, your unnerving tendency to always have the last word, and the fact that you dont let me get by with any bull shit, that Ive fallen hopelessly, madly, and crazy in love with you. So how do you like them apples? (his eyes grew serious now) Id do this all over again just for the chance to wake up next to you every morning."

Sam new once James laid his cards down on the table he would lose Kate to the man. Kate was still teary eyed, but she was stunned into silence. She couldnt beleive this was happening. And that with her own ears, she was actually hearing Sawyer profess his love for her. She knew moments like these would be few and far between with him, but seeing him here, pleading with her, took a huge weight off her heart. She actually felt hopeful again. Something she hadnt been able to really feel for a long time. Sawyer came back for her! A small smile of releif crossed her face. Kate knew she couldnt wake up without seeing his face every morning either. Kate gave Sawyer a slight nod and grabbed his other hand. Sawyers faith was restored when she took his other hand in hers. A knowing gaze between the two of them. Kate looked back to where Sam was standing and realized that he had gone. It was just the two of them now. Sawyer leaned into kiss her, but...

Just then the alarm began to sound and red lights started to blink in the hallways. Sawyer held Kates hand tight and looked back at her with a mixture of releif, happiness, and concern..."Come on, lets get outta here!" And Sawyer headed out of the room into the hallway. Kate couldnt help but crack a small smile. She knew that she had finally made the right choice. After all these years of making the wrong choices it felt really good to finally have someone love her back.

It still didnt take away the nagging feeling that she had dissapointed her father. For as long as Kate could remember, she was daddies little girl. Sam was the father she always knew. She lived to be the apple of his eye, but now...She didnt know anymore. That wasnt as important to her now. For the first time in her life she wasnt worried about what he thought or didnt think of her. This was new territory. Kate in her own little world didnt notice the walls now exploding in around them. Sawyer pulled Kate out of her thoughts as he yanked her away from a collapsing wall, The dynamite had begun to implode and like a domino effect, it wouldnt be long before the whole building was taken out, and worse yet, they had to get out before they were exposed to the radiation. Sawyer could run faster than Kate and he held her hand, making sure she wasnt lost this time. His feet picked up more speed as they rounded a corner and saw the familar crack of light from the doorway ahead. They were almost out. They were nearing the archway and Sawyer shoved Kate ahead of him first. Sawyer was a step behind her when another explosion erupted, blowing debris out of the building. Sawyer dove to cover Kate. He could feel the heat on his skin and it burned, but he didnt care. As long as Kate was safe. They both lay there for a minute breathing heavily in silence. Sawyer finally shifted to the side to let Kate out when he felt a huge stab of pain soar through his body. He groaned and Kate knew immediately that something was wrong. Kate shrieked when she saw Sawyer. He was still lying beside her with one hand still draped near her hip, but there was alot of blood coming out of a gash in his left shoulder. A piece of metal schrapnel still imbedded in his wound.

Kates breathing got heavy. She wasnt good with blood and gore, but her gut reaction took over and she got up helping Sawyer to sit up as well with her arms around his torso. Kate called urgently to Jack and Sayid. Luckily for them Jack and Sayid had taken cover only a few yards from them, and Jack came out immediately to assess Sawyers wound. Kate helped Jack get Sawyers shirt off and she held him as Jack quickly and painfully yanked the piece of metal out of Sawyers fllesh. Sawyer shouted, "Son of a bitch (and looked to Jack angrily) You ever talk to Sayid about a career with the republican guard, I think youd be good at it doc!" Jack just smirked, releived that Sawyers wound looked much worse than it actually was. Once he got the schrapnel out he discovered that it had only penetrated about a half inch into his skin. Jack looked at Kate.."Hes just gonna need a few stiches...Maybe you can help him with that?" Kate nodded her head. Just then Sayid piped up..."The boats here!" Jack, Sawyer, and Kate all looked out towards the shorline and saw white sails on the horizon.

Chapter 15

They were all standing on the rocky beach now. Looking out at the anchored boat, Jack turned to Kate..."There should be a needle and thread the first aid kit on board, otherwise you can get one out of my supply cart in the hatch." Sawyer turned to Jin. Although he was starting to get his memory back seeing the man again comforted him greatly. He shook Jins hand. "Nice to see your still kickin Chewy." Kate looked questioningly at Jack..."You mean your not coming with us?" Jack shook his head and looked at Sayid. Sayid explained, "We want to take out the beast Kate, not just a limb...We have a map... A map of all their facilities on the island...And with it, we plan to strike them while their vulnerable and make a deal, or smoke them out of their holes(long pause as Kate and Sawyer look at him with mouths agape, Sayid continued)...Its now or never...And I chose now..." Sawyer looked at Sayid.."You and Jack cant do all that on your own...Youll need more people..." Sayid nodded his head..."Ive already spoken with Jin here and hes agreed to stay...you know how to sail right? (Sawyer nodded his head hesitantly) So you and Kate can return and tell Locke and others about the plan and they can bring back the boat to us for a quick and easy getaway if neccessary." Kate shook her head, not sure if she liked this plan..."Sayid...Are you sure you know what your doing?" Sayid smiled and looked back at both Kate and Sawyer..."Yes, we finally have the upper hand, Im not gonna let this chance slip away" Kate looked to Jack and he nodded his head in agreement. She didnt like this. It was a rash plan and one that was very risky. Jack reaffirmed with Kate "Go on Kate, get him home...Antibiotics are in the med cart." Kate nodded and turned with Sawyer back towards the boat, they watched the three men, Jack, Sayid, and Jin get smaller and smaller as the boat drifted away.

Once they had gotten out to sea and sailing, Kate looked around for some string and a needle. She finally found a first aid kit buried in a droor down below. Coming back to the deck where Sawyer was sitting she held out 2 colors of string..."Black or Blue?" Sawyer smirked and met Kates gaze, he had to think for a moment, finally making a decision after the long pause..."Black, its more rebelious..." Kate smiled to herself and muttered.."Thats what Jack chose to" Sawyer was confused for a minute..."Jack? Have you done this before Freckles?" Kate loved it when Sawyer called her that, a little thrill ran through her body. She could tell she was getting to Sawyer, "Jealous?" Kate whispered in his ear. Sawyer just smiled and called her bluff, "No...I guess you just like those bad boy types then, huh?" Kate was pulling the needle through the thread, when he made her blush... She didnt want Sawyer to see this and continued working with the string..."uh huh." Kate finally finished stitching Sawyer up, and she turned around to look at him now..."All done!" Sawyer smirked and just as Kate was starting to clean the table she had set everything on behind them, Sawyer grabbed her by the waist and pulled Kate into his lap..."I dont think so Darlin...you havent kissed me to make it better yet and Im just gettin started." Kate smiled and Sawyer planted a crushing kiss on Kates lips. She moaned with surprise when he took her in his arms and smothered her mouth with his. Their contact was electric and Kate could feel sparks run through her body as his tongue thrust deeper into her mouth. She kissed him back with a fiery passion forgetting all concepts of time and place. They went into a world all their own.

Kate broke the kiss first, coming up for air and looked into Sawyers eyes. "Your not the only one whos in love you know?" Kate had a light in her eyes as she looked at Sawyer. Sawyer smiled back, a hint of exstasy passed over Sawyers face before he buried his head in her neck, placing a trail of kisses down her collarbone and breast line. Lips finding the swells of flesh to devour with his mouth. He pulled Kates tank top and bra straps down to her shoulders one by one. She shivered as the chilly air brushed her skin, but then Sawyer brushed his stubble over her chest sending a warm tingling sensation over her flesh. He turned one cup over and began licking her nipple. Squeezing and pinching the other breast over the fabric with his hand. Kate moaned. He wanted to make sure she was hard and her breasts swelled with anticipation for him. Moving his mouth to the other breast now, bra cup turned down he licked the salty nub. Kate ran her hands through Sawyers hair giving him ripples of pleasure. Sawyer brought his mouth up to Kates now kissing her again, and he started to unbutton her pants. He bought her to a standing position and they slid off effortlessly, exposing a pair of violet bikini panties. Kate began to unbutton Sawyers pants but he stopped her once she got to the zipper. "You first" he mumbled into her mouth. And he placed his hand on her swell below her pantyline. Kate moaned again. He was making her so hot for him. After the night before, she craved him like she craved no other man. It was torture waiting for him like this.

He pulled her close to him now and she could feel him harden. The fabric between her panties and his denims was far too thick. Kate wanted to feel Sawyer inside her. Sawyer felt Kate grind her hips into him as he played with her breasts and flicked his fingers, down into her panties, in and out of her pussy. Kate ran her hands up and down his chest and up through his hair again, and the down his backside cupping his bottom in her hands. Kate couldnt help herself and she reached down into Sawyers pants. His erection was so hard. Sawyer brushed Kates hands down and pulled her up closer to him. He lifted her bottom so she was facing him and carried her down the steps into the bed below deck. Sawyer carefully lay Kate on the bed and he crawled up to kiss her. She kissed him back tugging again at his jeans, when he slipped back down, trailing kisses down her neck, torso, then stomach. Then, Sawyer ripped kates underwear off. Kate looked up at him shocked "you wont be needing them anymore for what were gonna do Freckles" An evil grin and then Kate groaned out loud as his tongue entered her cavern, exploring folds and crevices, finally hitting the spot that made her moan the loudest. "Oh Sawyer!" Kate muttered through gasped breath. She was trying to hold it in this whole time, but he wasnt letting her. Finally when Sawyer had gotten her all hot and bothered and ready for take off, he removed his mouth from her pussy. Unzipping his pants now, erection springing out. Kate held her arms out to him wanting to feel him so badly. Finally letting the weight sink him down into her, Kate saw thousands of tiny stars. She felt a huge explosion at his first thrust and couldnt prevent herself from falling over the edge completely. Kate shook and quivered below him, the build up sending waves of pleasure through her body. But now it was Sawyers turn. Kate wanted to make him cum to.

Sawyer was so turned on that Kate came as soon as he entered her, he nearly came himself, but watching Kates beautiful face he was so lost in the moment. Kate finally stopped panting and kissed him on the mouth. "This time were going for a double header." She smiled and turned Sawyer over. Kate went down on him, sucking on his shaft. Now it was Sawyers turn to moan and Kate smiled as she saw the pleasure she was causing him. Kate couldnt wait any longer. Turning him on was turning her on and she had to be inside him. She was too selfish, unlike him. Kate moved up and straddled Sawyer, grazing her pussy with his cock. Taunting and teasing him before she finally sunk down into him. Kate could feel the vibrations and the throbbing and Sawyer ran his hands up her hips and breasts as she found her rhythym. The same rhythym as the lapping water against the side of the boat. Kate grabbed his balls below her as she thrust herself into him. And then she knew she had him. Her green eyes locked with his steel blue and they were one once more. A burning fire inside her, he was the only man that would ever make her whole.

Sawyer usually had the upper hand with women and sex, but Kate left him completely out of control. Apparently this is what love did, Sawyer thought as he smirked to himself, and then he looked over at Kate who had that same hunger and fire that he posessed in his eyes, and he found home. No matter what happened, between them this is the place he would cherish most.

Sawyer woke an hour later alone. The sheets on Kates side all tussled. Sawyer put his pants back on and climbed up to the deck. Kate was sitting on the starbird side looking out at the water. Her expression was hard to read. Sawyer sat down next to her and looked out at the same ocean, taking in a deep breath. The silence between them bringing on a feeling of peace. After a few minutes Kate spoke..."He wasnt my real father (Sawyer looked at her a hint of confusion, Kate clarified) Sam...He wasnt my biological father...A man named Wayne was." Sawyer nodded his head, the name sounded familiar to him, but he couldnt recall when he had heard it, nevertheless, ready to listen to whatever she had to tell him. Kate continued..."I killed Wayne...blew up a house with him in it...He hurt my mom...and me (long pause) and I wanted to make sure that hed never hurt anyone ever again..." Hearing this made Sawyer angry and releived that the son of a bitch was dead. He closed his eyes for a brief moment while Kate told him the rest. Just listening. When Kate was finally finished she looked up at Sawyer, gratitude for his respect and reserve, and she forced a small smile. It was Sawyers turn to speak. Kate was surprised to hear him be serious, but she was thankful as well. "Kate...no matter what he told you, your a good person...you always have been...Just sometimes we have to do bad things for the greater good. And you forget who you really are cause youve been running for so long. (long pause) But you are a good person, and I think theres a whole campground on the other side of this island who would agree with me." Kate leaned into Sawyer and he put his arm around her. They both looked out at the ocean again and she put her arm around him..."I dont think theyd argue that with your case either, Mr. Hero." Kate smirked and Sawyer rolled his eyes mockinly, smiling back at her. Then they noticed the familiar campground approaching. Kate sighed.."Were home." Sawyer nodded and rested his chin on her head..."Yeah....home."

The End.

Just kidding ofcourse. Here is a link to the sequel to Broken Halves, called Sum of a Whole.
