Summary This fan fiction picks up right where we left off with the Jack/Kate/Sawyer story in the s2 finale. Love triangle , Skatecentric (note to skaters, bear with me, I promise the payoff will be worth it .) Broken Halves
Chapter 1
It started with a look. Pangs of jealously flashed through his eyes. Despite everything that happened between them, her getting caught in "The Net" with Jack, Ana, her death and Libbies, Mikes betrayal; Kates last pleading glance for reassurance was cast in Jacks direction once again. It hurt like hell to know that Kate looked to Jack first for guidance, help, and friendship. Sawyer gave one last desperate look in Kates direction before the hood was placed over his head.
As they marched inland, Sawyer could hear the shuffeling of feet behind and infront of him. Thinking to himself that trying to make a break for it now would be pointless. These Others, definately had the upper hand. Sneering. Sawyer didnt know where they were going, but once they were inside he felt like they were moving underground. Low lights and dense air, the sounds coming from other rooms were muted and did not carry far.
When they finally stopped, he heard a muffled grunt from Kate, shuffeling of feet and then a door slam shut. If they took his hood off at that moment, they would see the hard cold glare of a man who wouldnt hesitate to tear each and every one of their limbs from limb just for the cool satisfaction of having his revenge for this. They messed with the wrong man this time. Sawyer was pulled again further down the hallway, they pushed him into a room, yanked the bag off his head, and swiftly cut his hand ties and gag off. He was about to turn around and give them a piece of his mind when the door slammed in his face. Hearing the click of a deadbolt lock behind. He was stuck here. Wondering where they took Jack. Vowing to himself that he was gonna get them, get Kate, out of here, even if he had to die trying.
Sawyer contained his anger and tried to regroup for a minute, listening silently to the muffled sounds. He couldnt make anything out. Looking around he noticed he was trapped in a small room with no natural lighting, just a dim flourescent light over the doorway, most likely supported by some secondary power system. Some vacant lockers and a metal cylinder of some sorts on the floor. What the hell is that? He went over to examine it more closely. Picked it up, and looked at it. Set it down.
No freakin clue.
Sawyer rolled his eyes and sat back down against the opposite wall facing the door, a long sigh of frustration as he ran thoughts through his head.
What the hell am I sposed to do now?
And then there was a tapping noise. The sound seemed close. Like it was coming from the other room. Getting up from his seat he went over to the wall with the vent. Suddenly, a loud clanging noise resided in his ears and he scrunched his eyes in irritation to the tone deafening sound. Everything clicking as realization came, he immediately spoke out into the vent, in a hushed tone...
"Kate?"
Waiting, pausing, now surrounded by silence, he began to worry. Just as he decided to look around again for tools of his own a soft voice came through the vents..
"Sawyer?...is that you?"
A small gasp of releif was let out as he licked his lip and grinned back.
"Yeah Freckles..its me...I dont talk to walls for just anyone you know."
There was another pause, but he was sure he could hear her lips part into a smile. Clearing her throat softly she began...
"Sawyer I think I can squeeze into this vent, but I need you to help me get the screws off on your end."
Raising his eyebrows, he smirked...
"you need help with unscrewing them huh?"
Kate prentended to be appauled. "Sawyer, Im serious here, can you try not to be a pig for one second"
Sawyer rolled his eyes at her last comment.
"Alright Miss No Fun And Mopey, (he couldnt resist one little jab) you and the doc must be a match made in heaven. Too bad he's not here to save you."
Instantly regretting his words he wished he could take them back, but he couldnt. Instead of a jabbing comeback of her own Sawyer was surprised to be met by silence. Looking around for anything he could use to open the vent, he found nothing. There was still no sound on Kates end and Sawyer came back to the vent concerned, wanting to make sure nothing had happened to her. Calling her name softly again.
"Kate?" Feeling for the screws. They were large enough, but his fingers were still clumsy trying to unscrew them. A soft reply.
"Im here, I just....(her voice trailed off)"
Steadying his hand as he got the final screw out Sawyer looked at the vent apprehensive to what Kate was just about to say. He carefully lifted the vent off, careful not to make a clanging noise.
"Its off."
Looking at the small hole, Sawyer didnt think Kate would be able to fit through it.
"You sure you can..." Before he could finish, her brown locks and sooty face became visible, green eyes meeting blue ones.
"Can you help me out of here?"
Sawyer smiled faintly, and quickly stepped up, his hands cupping her underneath her arms to help pull Kate out. Her pants caught on something and she was stuck for a moment. Sawyer gave her one hard tug and she fell out knocking him off balance, almost bringing him down with her. Sawyer caught her just in time, pulling her up to stand infront of him. Kate clung to him, her hands still tangled in his shirt. He could feel the warmth of her breath on his chest. Looking down at her as she straigtened herself up. Letting go of him. Stepping back for a minute, long pause. Kates eyes meeting his once more and her face crumbled, throwing her arms around him. Strong hold this time. He returned her embrace stroking her hair. Kate began...
"If anything happened to you."
Looking down at her feeling all those supressed emotions rise to the surface again. They were practically nose to nose, lip almost brushing lip when they heard footsteps outside. Kates eyes were filled with fear as they got closer to the door, and then it was gone. Courage returning to her. She whispered in Sawyers ear. "Sit down on the floor and pretend your napping okay? Then Ill hide behind the door and hit him over the head with that," she gestured to a metal cylinder on the floor.
Like a choreographed dance, the door handle turned and the man entered stepping closer to a sleeping Sawyer to get a better look at him and then, Kate was behind him in 2 steps. CLANG, as the metal collided with his head, a small spot of blood trickeled down, and his legs buckled. Sawyer and Kate were out the door within 2 quick seconds.
Once out in the hallway Sawyer and Kate searched the corridor for any locked rooms. It seemed that every room they passed by was vacant. Kate reaffirmed with Sawyer as he began to linger.
"We have to find Jack!"
A worried look on her face as she frantically tried to cover as much ground as possible. Sawyer in fact had a hard time keeping up with her. She was moving so quickly, not taking in anything. Her primary objective was clear. Sawyer knew they had to find Jack and find him soon before they tried anything. Time was an enemy here. But Sawyer couldnt help himself. The jealousy set in. He finally met up with her.
"Dont worry Freckles, Im sure your boyfriend is gonna be fine."
Kate looked at Sawyer a mixture of anger, confusion, and worry spread across her face. Sawyer couldnt tell if she was mad at him or just really worried about Jack. They moved on to a different part of the building. All these underground hallways seemed like a maze to him. Sawyer wondered who were the mice here and what was supposed to be the cheese.
As if on cue rounding the corner, 2 armed guards who accompanied a wrist bound Jack approached from the next hallway. Sawyer and Kate stood in defense, hands clenched, ready to attack if neccessary. And then a voice from behind startled them.
"Well, well, well...Guess it didnt take you 2 long to join the party now did it?"
Sawyer and Kate turned around. It was Zeke, or Tom, as he called himself. He took a key from his pocket an unlocked the door he stood next to. Turning to Jacks guards.
"Alex! Clancy! you want to show our guests to their new quarters?"
The two guards, a male and a female, brought their guns up blocking them all from going in the opposite direction. The male, Clancy had a grip on Jacks hand ties and shoved him inside. Sawyer and Kate knowing they were overpowered here, had no choice but to follow Jack into the room. Zeke blocked the door now, standing in the middle with Alex and Clancy at his side.Looking to Kate and Sawyer.
"Hope you two enjoyed your little tour.....Dont worry, tomorrow youll get the twenty dollar one (smirking at Sawyer). Sawyer narrowed his eyes. Kate looked to Sawyer and then back at Zeke and asked in a stern voice...
"Why did you bring us here?"
Zeke smiled. And snorted lightly.
"All in good time Kate, all in good time...For the moment though, since you three cant seem to keep your hands off eachother, your staying in here. (He gestured to the bunkers on the wall and the bathroom to the side.) I hope our accomodations meet your satisfaction. (smiling again, a pause).... And in the morning, well talk about that other thing... About why your here."
Sawyer stepped forward, angry. The guard named Clancy aimed his gun at Sawyer. Kate stepped up and grasped Sawyers arm, in an effort to coax him back to safety. Sawyer stood firmly in place meeting Zekes gaze with fury. Angy that he was being held against his own will, angry that they had the upperhand, angry about everything. Zeke gave Sawyer a wink and started to step away.
"Sleep tight kiddies! Dont let the bed bugs bite!"
And with that the guards left and he closed the door behind him. Locks set in place as they heard the footsteps move away.
Kate went over to Jack and put her hand on his shoulder.
"Jack, are you okay?"
Jack looked back at her hazily and nodded. Hand on his head.
"Yeah Im fine, they just injected me with something. I couldnt make out what the label said, but it must have been a mood suppressant, cause I couldnt feel any emotion. Its starting to come back now..".
Sawyer smirked standing with arms folded at the side of the room, sarcasm coming to the surface.
"Yeah big change there, Jacko!"
Kate glared angrily at him and then looked back at Jack.
"So, do you know where they took you...what they did?"
Jack answered...
"I was in some sort of examination room. I cant recall how long I was in there or what they did exactly, but the only thing I remember is at the end someone came in and informed the doctor that 'they were ready'."
Kate looked at him puzzled followed by a similar confused gaze from Sawyer. Still in a sour mood from before Sawyer started in...
"Well isnt that conveneint! He's lost his memory and were stuck in the middle of a goddamn rabbit hole. (nodding to Jack) All thanks to Alice in wonderland over there."
Kate shook her head in defense.
"Thats enough Sawyer!"
Jack began to get his energy back and spat back a reply.
"No body asked you for your opinion Sawyer...I did what I thought was best for everyone...Sayid and I had a plan."
Sawyer growled back
"Oh you had a plan huh? Did you ever think of clueing the rest of us in? Maybe we wouldnt be in this predicament if you had!!!"
Kate intervened.
"Okay, thats enough you two! (sighs loudly) Im gonna wash my face and use the restroom. When I get back were gonna talk about a new plan--to get the hell out of here."
As Kate was heading back into the restroom, Sawyer called back to her...
"Take your time sweetheart, cause I could go all night with Julius Caesar over here."
Kate rolled her eyes and looked back at him before shutting the door behind her. A wavering smirk from Sawyer as he narrowed his eyes back to Jack. Jack began..
"You can say whatever you want Sawyer but thats not gonna change the fact that were stuck here together, whether you like it or not. Live together, die alone. So I suggest we try to work together now."
Sawyer rolled his eyes.
"Oh yeah I know who you'd like to be together with. You dont have to spell out the meaning of third wheel for me.....Besides, I thought your new philosophy was every man for himself. Atleast thats how it went down in the hatch. Lets just cut the bullcrap here shall we?"
Jack shook his head and smiled.
"Look who's talking, the bullcrap artist. And why should you care so much about Kate and me, since you got caught in a net of your own not too long ago?" Sawyers nostrils flared. It took alot of restraint to not get up and pummel Jacks face in at that moment.
Meanwhile, Kate was in the restroom, washing her face when she heard through the oh so thin door...
"Oh yeah I know who you'd like to be together with. You dont have to spell out the meaning of third wheel for me.....Besides, I thought your new philosophy was every man for himself. Atleast thats how it went down in the hatch. Lets just cut the bullcrap here shall we?"
A small smile curved across her lips. He was jealous. Thats what this was all about. Peering back at her blushing face in the mirror. And then...
"Look who's talking, our very own island bullcrap artist. And why should you care so much about Kate and me, since you got caught in a net of your own not too long ago?"
Puzzled at first, Kate frowned. A net? She recalled that Sawyer questioned her suspiciously when she told him about her and Jack getting caught in the net while they were out trying to make the exchange for Walt. Wheels turning in Kates head. Finally a click of realization. Sawyer thinks Jack and I had sex? He got caught in a net of his own? Sawyer had sex?
Suddenly Kates couldnt breathe and she was furious. She wanted to find out who it was so she could tear the womans hair out by the roots. Nostrils flaring. A deep breath..and another. Kate counted silently to 5. Composing herself now, she splashed water on her face again. Thinking. I have no right to be mad at him. We never started anything. He didnt do anything wrong. And why didnt I start anything? Sitting down now, hand over her face, a pounding headache setting in.
Only a few minutes had passed since Kate had her revelation in the bathroom. She was furious. How could he do that to me? I bet anything that it was with that scoundrel Ana Lucia. Feeling momentarily remorseful now because Ana was no longer with them Kate composed herself. Getting up and opening the door. A cool hard glare cast in Sawyers direction. If he even so much as makes one backhanded comment. She wanted to kick him down where the sun dont shine. Narrowing her eyes now taking a seat next to Jack. One more stormy glare cast in Sawyers direction as she placd her hand on Jacks arm. Looking to Jack now.
"So whats our next move?"
Sawyer instantly knew that something was wrong the moment he saw Kate exit the bathroom peering at him through those icy green eyes. And then she sat down next to Jack and clenched his forearm. Realization crossing his face, raising his neck a little higher.
She knows.
Sawyer tried to meet Kates glare with a challenging stare of his own, but the guilt had consumed him too much. Angry glare now at her for making him feel this way. Any other woman, and he would have been able to laugh this off. Maybe even take a little pride in his conquest. But his conscience took a front seat this time. Fixing his gaze on Jack now. The man who would most likely get their sorry asses all out of here. The hero.
Jack was taken aback by Kates sudden tenderness and concern for him. It had been awhile since he felt close to her. She had been so distant lately. But he noticed that she mostly only gave him her attention when she needed something. Not like Sawyer. But at the moment he had drawn the longer straw, so he decided he would allow it to continue. Jack started to relax a little more as he became accustomed to the sudden contact. A subtle glance at her hand, pretending to not notice Kate, he looked back at Sawyer. Getting back to the point.
"Well what worked before? Where did they have you two before you found me?"
Sawyer was silent for once. Looking to Kate to take the floor. Kate looked at Sawyer breifly, some of the hardness gone from her eyes as she concentrated at the situation at hand...
"We were both locked in separate rooms..Then I crawled through the air vents to Sawyers room and I hid behind the door surprising the guard when he came in to check things out.."
Jack looked at Kate searching her eyes.
"Did you see anything unusual? When you got out? Was there any landmarkers you passed that stuck out in your mind?"
Kate shook her head.
"No we were too busy looking for you."
Jack smiled faintly.
Sawyer started to feel ill. He got up with out a word, rolling his eyes and headed to the bathroom. Once inside, he closed the door.
Im being punished. Even now, as a prisoner of these hillbilly freaks, the hell of watchin those two co-erse is torture.
Sawyer didnt want to go out and face Kate and Jack so instead, he found the shower nozzle and turned the water on, letting the hot airy steam fill the room. Sitting there for a few minutes thinking before disrobing and stepping inside.
Meanwhile Kate and Jack hadnt gotten very far. Kate noticed when Sawyer got up, a cool smile on her face following him to the door as she realized that her efforts of making him jealous were working. But as she heard the water run in the shower, Kates expression turned to one of concern.
Sitting back now, settling in her own seat she looked at Jack.
"So what do you think we should do?"
Jack shook his head.
"Honestly Kate, I dont know. Until we find out more about these people and what they want from us, they have the advantage."
Kate nodded her head in agreement. Jack continued..
"They already know what your capable of with the little ambush move you and Sawyer pulled earlier."
Kate smirked, remembering how well she and Sawyer worked together. "Yeah, guess they do (Kate paused for a minute) So......we wait?"
Jack paused thinking the question over in his mind.
"Yeah, we wait...to see what were up against!"
They both looked up at the door as they heard the creak of the nob on the shower handle turn the water off.
Sawyers head was far from clear. He had hoped the shower would help ease some of his tension but he seemed to be even more on edge. Thinking about everything that had happened to them today, Mikes ambush, hearing that creepy Henry guy proclaim that the three of them were coming back with them. And what the hell was up with that purple light? Was it coming from their beach? Would there even be a beach to go back to if they got out of here? What did these Others want with us? Why us? His temples started to throb, fighting off a headache he dried off, got dressed and opened the door. Both Jack and Kate watched him apprehensively as he stepped out into the room. Jack called afer him sarcastically as he passed..
"Have a nice shower?"
Sawyer looked cooly back at both Jack and Kate.
"Beats sitting in here listenin to the two of you getting nothin decided."
Sawyer sat down on the bunker furthest away from them. He figured if they had something important to tell him they would just say it or wait till morning. Sawyer pulled back the blankets, got in and defiantly turned his head and back to face the wall, away from them.
(Time lapse)
In the morning Jack, Kate, and Sawyer went about thier morning routine in silence. Then there was a loud clamor an the door. Opening it Zeke was back and this time he had more men with him. Sawyer, Kate, and Jack were all leary of the enforced presence gathered around them. Watching them now, Zeke grinned.
"Well I trust you all had a good nights rest."
Jack spat back.
"Why dont we skip the pleasantries Tom! Now why dont you tell us who you all are and why we are here."
Zeke looked at him a glint in his eye..
"Well thanks Jack for your rude interruption, (looking back at his men) You give them all shelter and a place to wash up and this is how were treated? (smirking gaze focused back to Jack) I was just about to discuss that with you. (Zeke looked over to 2 of his men) Clancy! Marshall! (both men grabbed Jacks arms restraining him. Sawyer and Kate stepped forward but the other 4 remaining men all had their guns pointed at them. Zeke spoke once more,
"I wouldnt do that if I were you..."
Sawyer spat back, stepping alarmingly closer to Zeke...
"Oh I dont think you'll kill us Zeke, you woulda done that by now. So why dont we cut to the chase here."
Zeke grinned at Sawyer.
"Smart boy, but theres one thing you missed."
Sawyer retorted, "And whats that?"
Zeke nodded to Clancy. Clancy put his gun up to Jacks head, another man still holding him in place. Sawyers eyebrows were all furrowed. Kate, yelled "No" and stepped forward before they pulled her back. Zeke calmly and cooly explained...
"See you didnt count on this all being one BIG experiment did you? We've been watchin each and every one of you. Know what youve been doing where you go, who you talk to, (a smirk ) who you screw. (Kate cast a narrowed glare in Sawyers direction) And the thing is...your a threat to our exsistence. You've all been very invasive since you got here. You have no respect for us or this island...Just dont know when to let sleeping dogs lie...So, I had no choice but to bring in the 3 biggest trouble makers of the group and deal with you myself. Now I know who you follow. (He nodded to Jack) He's the biggest threat. Im gonna make an example of him. So you two are free to go as long as I have your word that youll never come back here, and shall we meet again with you or any of your people, it will be looking down at the barrel of a shotgun, and Ill be the one holdin it. And just like today, we wont hesitate to kill each and every one of you till the last man or woman is left standing."
Kate yelled once more, struggling again as they restained her, "Jack!" Sawyer couldnt take it anymore. His head was spinning. Closing his eyes pausing for a minute. If she really did love him, he couldnt live with himself if he didnt try anything. They cant kill Jack. Nostrils flaring now Sawyer looked to Zeke knowing he would regret this...
"Take me instead."
Kate could scarcely beleive her ears. It couldnt be him. No not him. Surprise echoed through her voice "Sawyer!"
Sawyer looked back at Kate and darted his eyes toward Jack, signaling to her to keep her eye on Jack. Zeke looked at Sawyer...
"We made our choice James, unless you can prove to us that it was the wrong choice, this decision is final."
Sawyer looked around at all the faces. Jack was shocked into silence, Kates eyes were pleading with him not to do this. The others looking at him smugly, Zekes coy grin.
"You want a reason, Ill give you one....Hes the doctor. What makes you think he knows anything about militia or handling a gun. He shoots like a girl. Im the one whos been hoarding them all for Christs sake!!!"
Zeke smiled at Sawyer.
"Nice try son, but I know Jack here knows how to handle a gun, and he's taken it upon himself twice to try and confront us."
Sawyer continued.
"Im the riff raff here. No one will try to come back for me. But they would come back to avenge Jack."
Kate couldnt help but shake her head, a single tear rolling down her face. Zeke replied to Sawyer.
"Is that all you got?"
Sawyer paused for a minute. Feeling like he was losing the battle. Closing his eyes once more before looking at Kate. Desperation and worry filled her eyes. Creasing his eyebrows, his voice quieter...
"And she loves him...Kate loves Jack!"
Zeke replied.
"Is that so? And why would that be important to us?"
Sawyer pulled himself together. All the hurt and pain of finally facing this fear of losing Kate forever subsiding, standing up straighter now meeting Zekes gaze...
"Cause hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."
Zeke snorted briefly and then smiled at Sawyer and then looked at Kate and Jack.
"Well, too bad its gotta be you Southern, I liked you...but you've got yourself a deal."
Zeke looked over to his men. "Clancy!" Clancy let Jack go and brought his gun up to Sawyers head....
"No," Kate screamed. "Sawyer dont do this! Please!" Her whole world came crashing down in these few breif seconds and she ran up to try and grasp Sawyer but the others stopped and overpowered her. Jack ran in and tried to help Kate. "Kate!" Jack called. Kate was frantic and the men had to strong hold her down. Sawyer tensed up "If you hurt her!." Then Zeke stepped in. "Marshall! Pete! Get them out of here. (looking to Sawyer) They'll be fine." Kate and Jack were escorted out into the hallway as Clancy clicked the safety off his gun, aiming it at Sawyer once more. Kate getting her last desperate glances through the doorway before they shut it to her face. Sawyer met her eyes, a blink to let her know that it would be okay, stare never breaking until the door was finally closed separating them forever. The guards releasing her now, she screamed, pounding on the door "No let him live, let him live!" Realization setting in as she collapsed on the floor. She didnt care about the past and what they did to eachother. All Kate cared about was now. She had to get him out of there. She couldnt breathe. Sobbing and choking for air. Looking up though tear stained eyes, breaking down, suddenly grabbing Jack, sobbing, breaking up, in a voice only Jack could hear...
"I...love him...I love Sawyer"
There was a loud POP, from inside the room. And Kates heart stopped.
A gasp, then quivered breath. Kate felt like everything was moving in slow motion. She closed her eyes as the sound of the gun shot echoed in her ears. Sawyer! All she could think of was how far they had come together, how they had this intense connection, and one that she shared with no one else till now. After everything that had happened, for it to end this way. For him to survive a plane crash, a stab wound, a near fatal gun shot after several days treckage through the jungle, and her endless tormenting...for it to end this way. To end his life with just one bullet--point blank? Kate stepped outside herself now, not beleiving that this was real. How could the moment she finally realized that she was in love with Sawyer be the last precious seconds of his life? She felt numb inside.
Jack helped Kate stand up. She couldnt focus or hear what he was saying. He put his arm around her and escorted her out following the Others down the long hall. Saddened by the loss of Sawyer. Despite what he said about himself, Jack knew he was a good man. A valued member of their group. Jack imagined that if he had a brother, he would be something like Sawyer--headstrong, and rebel without a cause. Looking over at Kate again, Jack knew he had to be there for her. He had always suspected that Kate loved Sawyer no matter how much she wanted to deny it.
As they continued on, Jacks thoughts wavered in and out thinking about Sawyer and where they were, why they really brought them here, and who these people were. Still not getting any real answers. Frustrated, Angry, Melancholy. As they turned another corner, Jack noticed that the structure of the building was similar to their hatch but on a larger scale, hexagon shape hallways branching out from what must only be the central power source. Wondering what it was. They passed a few Other people on the way out. Curious that they were all barefoot, recognizing the guard who Zeke called Alex. Eyes squinted as Jack noticed that she was attempting to mouth words to him. It looked like "Im sorry." Narrowed glare back at Alex as they finally reached the double doors.
Opening to the light of day. Jack and Kate were cast outside. A single warning from the one called Marshall "Go straight back to your camp, and never come here again." Jack opened his mouth to see if he could get anymore out of the man, when the door was closed in his face. Large bolt creaking as it was locked from the inside. Kate was silent, tears staining her face as she blindly let Jack lead her away.
They were a few hours away from The Others camp when Jack noticed that Kate was no longer moving. She had stopped about 20 paces behind. Kate, still had a blank stare on her face and went over to a rock. She collapsed down on top of it, burying her head in her hands. Trying to resist, but finally surrendering to the breakdown. Sobbing uncontrollably now.
Jack went over to place his hand on her shoulder. Kate immediately tensed up."Kate?"
Kate looked at him through fiery eyes. "Dont touch me, dont ever touch me or talk to me again"
Jack sighed and spoke quietly, "Kate!"
She looked at him with a rage, nostrils flaring now. "You let them take him....You let them shoot him...You killed Sawyer!!!!"
Jack replied "What? Kate!" Starting to get angry now from her accusations. "Your blaming me?" Nostrils flaring as he turned to face her. "We did everything we could in there Kate...Sawyer was the hero...He saved us...We were overpowered and he knew that."
Kate met his glance and stared venemously at Jack. "You'll never be like him!"
Jack looked down at the ground for a moment. That last remark cut him to his core. All this time he had given 100% of himself for these people, but Sawyer made the ultimate sacrifice. One that even he could not make. Closing his eyes breifly, Jack stood up and met Kates still icy glare. Taking a risk by grabbing her elbow to pull her back up. "Lets go back now Kate. We cant do anything else here....(pausing for a second) We'll hold a memorial service for him back at the beach..."
Kate felt his icy fingers curl around her elbow. She had just about enough of being bossed around by Jack. Sawyer was right, 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.' Kate got up and pushed Jack back. "Im not going anywhere with you!"
Just then Kate heard a soft thud fall on the ground behind her. On her guard, and turning around. She found the source of the noise. Kate bent over to pick up a mango that had dropped from the tree above. Examining the green/pink fruit in her palm. Swallowing hard. Remembering the day they had all played Poker with Sawyer on the beach and how he had lost all his mangoes in one hand with Jack. She should have been broken hearted by the site of this small object she held in her hand, but a faint beacon of light returned to her eyes. Smiling to herself now. Faith returning...
Jack oblivious to Kates discovery, spat back "And where are you gonna go Kate? Your as good as dead out here alone in these woods, and you know it!"
Kate turned to look back at him. Anger gone. Calm. Pausing for a second, a nod. Her eyes more determined now. "Im going to find Sayid!"
Jack replied "What?"
Kates voice stronger now. "I know he's still alive. Sawyer is alive!"
She felt it in her heart. She couldnt let go of him cause he wasnt gone yet. Sawyer was alive!
Jack caught up to her now. "Your burnt out Kate! Not thinking clearly...We heard the gunshot....They warned us to stay away...."
It was all crystal clear to Kate now. Weight lifting from her heart, hope returning. Steady breath, air coming back into her lungs. Looking back at Jack...
"Sawyer was right, they had plenty of chances to kill any one of us and they didnt take it. They closed the door before the shot was fired. They want us to think he's dead so we will be afraid.....It was all a test!"
Kate started back on the trail leading to the shoreline. Back to where the black smoke signal came from. Almost out of site now.
Jack watched her walk away. He suspected Kate was right, but the plan she suggested was risky. He didnt even know if Sayid was still where he said he would be. It was more likely that they could be killed going back now, versus just returning back to their own camp. Catching up to Kate. Feeling like he was out of his element. Kate looked back at him as he approached.
Sawyers eyes met Kates, he locked in on her as the door closed over her teary face. Sad glare as a thousand thoughts and flashes ran through his mind. Memories of the day the plane crashed, Hibbs, Australia, him and Kate by the waterfall, the day they found his boar, the raft, gun shot...
Looking back at Zeke and then Clancy now. They were speaking in hushed voices outside his hearing range. Sawyer knew this was the end. He wished there was another way, but he also knew that he had used all his get out of jail free cards. This was it. He did not fear death and many times in his life would have welcomed it. But this time, he wanted so badly to be on the othe side of that door. Sawyer knew realistically that Kate was better off with Jack now, he knew that he made the right decision, the selfless decision...for once in his life, but he wished he had made the wrong one. In hindsight, he knew he had acted like a pain in the ass here. No change really in how he handled things in his life before. Never knowing what it felt like to depend on people. But some of them actually depended on him here. Could it be possible that he had grown to care for these people and become a functioning member of their group? Amazed at the clarity of his thought in these last few seconds of his life and the irony of being the one infront of the gun now. It all came back around and he would finally pay for his sins.
Zeke was finished talking to Clancy and looked back up at Sawyer.
"Well James, guess its time."
Sawyer swallowed hard. He knew what it felt like to get shot but this time it was the end of the line. This time there was no one here to pick him up after he fell down. Jaw clenched, tensing up, eyes closed, he awaited the single shot. Hoping for a quick and painless end. Pausing. Clancy raised the gun aiming it in Sawyers direction...
POP!
The sound echoed throughout the room. Sawyer saw darkness as the slivers of light broke through his eyelids, he was surprised at how little it hurt. Opening his eyes now he half expected to be greeted by that bright white light everyone goes on about when you cross over, but instead Zeke was still standing there grinning at him sheepishly. Sawyers brow furrowed as he looked at Zeke. Im not dead? Then what the hell just happened? Like Zeke was reading his mind, he replied...
"It was a blank James!"
Sawyer was angry now that they were just toying with him. Half expecting the real bullet to pierce his heart momentarily. He muttered...
"Go to hell"
Zeke grinning again answered him...
"I think you should know a thing or two about hell James..."
Sawyer cast him a fierce glare. Zeke began again, explaining...
"Well, it just so happens that we needed to stage this little scene for your girlfriend and her hero. We only wanted one of you. Figure the search party wouldnt be as strong with only one missing."
Sawyer stood up a little straigter now.
"What the fuck are you talkin about?"
Zeke snorted.
"I always did like that firey attitude of yours James....See when we brought the 3 of you here, we didnt know which one out of you we wanted....So, last night was a test to see who was the best man or woman for the job...At first I thought Jack might be our guy cause he showed the most determination...But the way you defended him and tried to place the blame on yourself...and the love thing--I knew you were the right man for the job...You cant buy that kinda loyalty and self-sacrifice James."
Sawyer snarled...
"If you think for one second that Im gonna cooperate or take orders from you Bubba, you got another thing comin."
Zeke chuckled....
"Oh I didnt say you wouldnt be a challenge...I know your gonna be a tough one to break, but you'll be a huge asset to us if we succeed. And in that respect, it'll all be worth a little pain to get what we need."
Zeke was smiling at him now. Sawyer spat back...
"What do you need me for anyway, I saw like 10 of your zombies out there scratching their heads looking for something to do, like a bunch of idiots!"
Zeke began to grow impatient, getting annoyed now.
"You opened that can of worms yourself James. You people had to go and stick your necks where they didnt belong and now we've decided that we want something back in return...And that's you."
Sawyer narrowed his eyes. Zeke continued...
"Now I wont lie to you James...This next part is gonna hurt...Were gonna give you electromagnetic shock treatments to get you in tune with this island...This island is special James....And the more you try to resist it...The more its gonna hurt, and the longer we'll have to go."
Sawyer spat back....
"You son of a bitch....Pigs will fly before I'll let you brainwash..."
Zeke smiled, cutting him off...
"Some may call it that, but we prefer to use the term, cleansing of the conscience...And yours is mighty dirty son...In fact it might aid you to think of this in terms of helping you forget everything. Good and Bad. Wouldnt that be nice? To forget all your tragedies, your parents deaths, your abusive childhood, your empty life as a con man, Duckett.."
Sawyer glared at Zeke. Zeke knew he hit the man where it hurt the most, Smiling. Sawyer replied bitterly...
"I liked your first offer better. The one where you were gonna kill me."
Zeke narrowed his eyes. And nodded to Clancy. Clancy stepped forward catching Sawyer off guard as he jabbed a needle in his arm. Rendering Sawyer completely unconscious. Zeke exclaimed as Sawyers limp body hit the floor.
"If your not careful son, you may just get your wish!"
Kate and Jack had been walking for a couple hours now. They werent heading back towards where they came from, but towards the shoreline. Where Sayid started the black smoke signal and originally intended to dock the boat. Jack had been festering inside for the last hour. Angry at Kates brash behavior and a little jealous. He tried to push his darker thoughts aside. Looking for a way to take control of the situation again. They were almost to the campsite now, ascending the rocky cliff. Kate stepped out into the open in plain view and Jack pulled her back suddenly.
"We have to stay out of site here Kate."
Kate looked at him and then his hand on her arm...
"I know ! (shrugging his arm away, gesturing to an embankment of tents near by ) Why dont you go that way, (she pointed in the other direction) and Ill go this way, And we can meet at the cliffs edge?"
Jack shook his head. He hated being in this position. Ofcourse he would do anything to help a fellow castaway, Sawyer, thats not what this was about though. He felt like he was just a tool to Kate. It hurt him to see her make that choice between him and Sawyer so quickly. If it had been him in there instead of Sawyer, would she have gone to these same extreme measures? Still he tried to push these nagging thoughts away. Back to reality. Back to having control.
"No were not splitting up Kate."
Taking the lead again he scaled the rocks waiting for Kate to follow.
Sawyer was trapped inside a purple haze. He had found a place to escape the pain. He didnt know how long he had been here or where he was exactly. But he heard a loud crack and like an ice bath he was pushed in and yanked out of his limbo of numbness. Feeling the electrical currents run through his body once more. The pain searing through his head. He felt like he was being cooked alive. He screamed once..twice...a third time, the sound of his voice quieter in his head. Mind leaving body once more as the electrical current got stronger.
Kate and Jack had hit the shoreline now. Dissapointed to find no sign of the boat. Jack stopped Kate. Something wasnt right. Sayid wasnt here and neither was anyone else.
"I think we should just go back Kate!...were sitting ducks here without guns."
Kate looked at Jack annoyed. This totally wasnt like him, Jack wanted to go back? Cutting to the chase...
"So your just gonna give up then Jack? Is this because its about Sawyer or Me?"
Green eyes tearing into him. Jack was starting to get upset now too. Anger level boiling over...
"You know I would do anything to help Sawyer, Kate!"
Kate shook her head in disbeleif, thinking this was about his jealousy. Jack continued..
"You just arent seeing things clearly right now. We dont even know if hes still alive for sure and here you are, wanting to go charging in guns blazing without any guns and without a plan. Were out of our element here Kate. We need to regroup and come back with help and a better strategy."
Kate narrowed her eyes.
"You of all people should know Jack, that if they have them, 9 times out of 10 they arent coming back unless they are allowed to leave..And the longer they have Sawyer the greater the chance is that hes not coming back!"
Her face grew solumn thinking about what they might be doing to him now. Sawyer did not do caged well and she worried about how they might treat him if he lashed out at the wrong place and time. He was certainly in danger.
Jack could see that Kate was distraugt. He felt bad for her and at the same time envious. Just then they heard a vibration next to the large metal doors. This was a new hatch to them, one that branched off the campsite. Not further inland like the one they were held captive in. Jack wondered if they were somehow all connected. Jack and Kate both took a side of each door, ready to attack whoever was on the inside.
Suddenly someone from behind cleared their throat. Jack and Kate immediately on guard turned around to meet the newcomer. They both were suprised and releived to find Sayid standing there. Gun in hand, ready for battle. Sayid surprised himself asked...
"Where is everyone? (looking at the two of them now closer) Where are Sawyer, Hurley, and Michael?"
Sawyer tensed up in his chair as the last round of shock treatments subsided through his veins. Eyes closed, jaw clenched. He broke out in a balmy sweat. The girl named Alex came up and wiped his brow with a towel. And then she made way for Zeke and another man. Sawyer was blinking heavily now. Feeling like he was stuck on this track that only ran in slow motion trying to make out his words, slow speech. The other man spoke...
"How are you feeling James?"
Sawyer closed his eyes. He just wanted to go back into the darkness. Where he didnt have to see or feel. Shaken awake again by another loud crack, Sawyer opened his eyes looking at the man now, focusing in on his face, recognition, a dry croak...
"Your..him"
He smiled.
"Thats right son, do you remember my name?"
Sawyer blinked heavily. He couldnt remember where he had seen this man before. His face looked so familiar. Narrowing his eyes now. Snapping out of his trance. Recalling what Zeke said they were doing--trying to erase his memory. Sawyer knew he recognized this man, but for the life of him, couldnt recall his name. Worried that what they were doing was working. He lied, clearing his throat...
"No....(pausing for a second, tired sarcasm returning, weak smile) But Im sure if I need to know you sons of bitches will tell me."
Zeke nodded to his henchman Clancy, who was operating the shock machine.
"Well be back in 20 minutes."
Stepping outside with the other man, the man Sawyer knew, he muttered...
Kate, Jack, and Sayid had all filled eachother in on the events that took place since they parted ways. Kate excused herself to go to the little girls room and left them. Sayid was very interested to know more about the facility they were held captive in. Drilling Jack for questions again. Jack was frustrated because he didnt know what he was seeing. And ofcourse, conveniently being blindfolded for a good part of it didnt help, Jack spat back...
"I dont know Sayid. A lot of it was hazy cause they injected me with those drugs--some sort of mood suppressant."
Sayid was thinking.
"We never saw any movement here till you and Kate came back. Sun and Jin returned boat back to the beach and they were going to send Locke and Eko if no one returned within a days time."
Shaking his head now, drilling Jack once more...
"What about after. When you were fully conscious again. What happened then? What did you see? Who did you see?"
Jack sighed. Thinking that Going over this for the 500th time today was not gonna help him remember.... Kate came back just then, starting to get antzy, she jumped in...
"Sayid, it was a hatch, like ours, but bigger.."
Jack added to Kates reply..
"Yeah, all the halls led to a room in the center. A hexagon shape like all the other hatches on that map Sawyer found by the pile of notebooks." Jack only had a brief second to look at the map before they were ambushed, but he knew it was a map, and he knew it had to do with the hatches on the island.
Jack continued...
"And Henry was there, but he left...(thinking now) And...Tom...the this is our island guy, was his name I think? (Closing his eyes now, pausing for a minute trying to recollect, starting to come back slowly piece by piece) And...there was...a man...named Clancy....a....woman.....named Alex....And...."
Sayid cut him off...
"Alex? You said there was a woman named Alex?"
Kate looked at Sayid and answered for Jack...
"Yeah, he called her Alex..You know her?"
Sayids brow was all furrowed.
"She was young, like around 16 or so?"
Jack nodded
"Yeah...She even mouthed "Im sorry" to me as we were leaving the hatch...(looking suspiciously at Sayid) You know who she is?"
Sayid nodded, glancing up at Jack and Kate now...
"Yes, she is Danielle Rousseaus daughter.(pausing for a moment as he noticed the shocked expressions on Jack and Kates faces, he elaborated) She said they took Alex from her when she was an infant. "
Kate nodded.
She knew Danielle had a daugter, but didnt put two and two together until now. Repeating her name outloud.
"Alex."
Sayid nodded and Kate met his glare. She knew that Sayid was on the same page as her. Starting in...
"So if we can get to Alex, we can get to Sawyer."
Jack looked up puzzled.
"Woah, wait a minute! How do we know once we find her, she wont just turn around and rat us out? Or tell the Others where we are?"
Sayid looked at Jack...
"Because she has been an orphan for her whole life, and now she has a chance to know the truth. We are the only ones who can give that to her."
Kate nodded grabbing her things. Sayid stood up as well, ready to leave the encampment, and then Jack got up. Kate spoke reaffirming with them....
"We find Alex..We find Sawyer, and then we can smoke those Sons of Bitches out of their snake hole."
Leading the way back to the hatch. Kate knew exactly what had to be done. Now she had a plan
Kate, Sayid, and Jack had all been hiking for just under an hour. Sayid wasnt sure what strategy they could use to draw Alex out. If they just sat and waited for her outside the entrance, it could take weeks. No, they needed a diversion. Something that would get enough of them to come out of the hatch. Like she read his mind, Kate looked at Sayid.
"Do you have any suggestions as to how were gonna get in there?"
Sayid shook his head. Not sure...
"No, I will have to check out the parameter before we can determine that factor."
Kates mind was turning thought after thought around in her head. Off topic, wondering outloud...
"Do you think dynamite could blow up an underground building like our hatch?"
Jack looked at Kate like she was crazy. Sayid was puzzled at first and then a glint of understanding (She wanted to blow up the place with dynamite). Sayid entertaining Kates thought answered...
"If we had enough of it, and it was strategically placed, then yes, dynamite could destroy it."
Kate nodded. She knew the first thing she would do when inside was find Sawyer. But after she did and she knew he was okay, she was gonna make sure they never hurt him or any more of their people again. Enough was enough.
20 minutes had passed and Zeke was back again. This time, without his friend. Looking at his henchman, Clancy, Zeke spoke...
"Clancy, this will be our last round for today."
Clancy nodded and warmed up the machine again. Sawyer braced himself for the loud cracking noise. A deep breath. He was barely conscious enough to have a rational though, but nonetheless Sawyer wondered if it wouldnt just be better to not resist and let them do this to him. Zekes words from earlier ringing in his ear "No more pain." No more anything. That had to be better than the eternal hell of his haunted mind and hanging on to a thought of getting out of here or seeing Kate again.
The current was really strong this time and the whole chair shook as Sawyer clenched his fists around the chair elbows. Screaming again at the top of his lungs. In his mind saying, Make it stop, make them stop, make the pain go away. A small part of him though still thought he deserved this for Frank and for what he had become. He would not let them see him beg. Wishing that death would come to him before another round, by some small miracle, it finally stopped. Turning the machine off now, Zeke stood infront of Sawyer holding his head up, making eye contact.
"Do you know where you are Son?"
Sawyers brows were creased, clenched jaw as he tried to let the pain subside. Disoriented. Feeling weak, very weak, he shook his head.
Zeke nodded.
"Good, thats very good..."Sawyers eyelids were dropping slowly, Zeke wanted to get in one more question before they stopped..."Do you remember the plane crash?"
His words echoed inside Sawyers head, but he couldnt fight it anymore. Eyes falling completely now. Sawyer passed out from the pain. Head hanging, arms and legs still strapped in the chair.
Zeke was dissapointed, not knowing if they had erased that part of his memory yet. It could take time to set in too. Removing the suction probes from Sawyers temples Zeke thought it would be best just to leave him in here for a little while. Let the drugs wear off. Looking over at Clancy Zeke nodded...
Kate, Jack and Sayid had spent about 30 minutes checking out the vacated parameter. Looking for any sub entrance, keyhole or lever that could get them inside. Sayid had a 9mm and his flare gun from the boat, but with an iron door, it wold barely make a dent. They were just about to give up and discuss a new strategy when Jack leaned back against the hatch wall, foot on a rock, when the doors magically opened. Kate looked at Jack...
"What did you just do?"
Jack shook his head.
"I dont know, just leaned back...."
Sayid looked down noticing the rock Jack had stepped on was lowered into the ground now. Gesturing to Jacks foot Sayid pointed out...
"It was the rock, the rock was the lever."
It didnt take the 3 of them long to charge inside. Sayid discussed with Jack and Kate his plan once inside. Kate ran in frantically searching for any thing she could have remembered when she was with Sawyer, but it all looked the same. Jack and Sayid scaled the hallways behind and ahead of Kate, searching for anything or anyone that would lead them to Sawyer or Alex.
Just then they heard a door creek open at the end of the hallway. Sayid ran up behind it. Jack and Kate leaned back against the wall. Sayid grabbed his gun and handed Jack the flare gun. Nodding and whispering to Kate "remember the plan."
And then Kate came out into the hallway. She could see the 3 people now. They were armed and looked like they were heading back outside. Kate jumped infront of the door surprising them.
"Hey!...(she shouted as all 3 of them looked at her.) Got a light?" The man who looked to be the lead spoke to the other two behind him.
"Get her."
They both stepped out of the doorway and went for Kate. Sayid hit the leader over the head with his gun knocking him unconscious and Jack went for the man who grabbed Kate first. Kate elbowed the third man, who was struggling with her. Jack was wrestling with the second man and was about to be overturned when he twisted the mans arm enableing him to hit the man over the head with the flare gun. Sayid came to Kates aid with the third man, Kate giving him one last jab in the shin before Sayid hit him on the head.
All three of them breathless, dragged the men back into the room. Sayid nodded for Kate and Jack to begin. Kate grabbed her attackers shirt and pulled it off him. And then she took his pants. Jack did the same with his man, and Sayid followed suit. When they were all done, they undressed and changed clothes. Now fully dressed in tattered rags and hillbilly attire. They didnt know where they were headed next, but Sayid knew these disguises would help them blend in more. Kate was out the door followed by Jack, and..... Just as Sayid was about to exit a voice from behind stopped him...
"What are you doing?"
He turned around to find a young women standing there. Jack heard the voice in the hallway and doubled back. Kate followed suit....
It was Alex. The very girl they were looking for had found them instead. Sayid lowered his gun after Jack and Kate charged in explaining to him who she was. The whole experience surreal to Alex as she listened to Sayid, Kate, and Jack explain how they knew her mother. Alex a bit baffled and apprehensive by it all agreed to help once Kate pulled her aside and talked to her woman to woman. The four decided to separate. Sayid handed Kate the flare gun for her protection, taking the 9mm for him and Jack. Sayid and Jack going to find the main power source and Alex and Kate going to find Sawyer.
Kate didnt know if she could trust Alex, but unfortunately, she had to. There was no other choice. Not if she ever wanted to see Sawyer again. They turned a corner down a dark corridor and Alex opened the door to a dimly lit room. Kate gasped when she saw his crumpled body collapsed in what looked like some sort of electricution chair. Eyes tearing up Kate wondered if he was dead. She couldnt hold it back anymore and tears ran down Kates face.
A memory flash of their first kiss when she went into the clearing to find him after Jack and Sayid had tortured him. At the time the thought of kissing Sawyer revolted her. He represented everything she stood against, but then he slowly started working his way under her skin. He could see through Kate like no other man she had known. Like no other person. And then she agreed to kiss him, for the medicine. Feeling sorry for him at first, his last desperate attempt to get to her, and they kissed, and it went from a game to something real. She knew in that moment that he was dangerous to her. If she wasnt careful, she could fall for the southern con man from Tennessee, who ironically wrote a letter to a man who conned his parents that he himself tried to become. But he wasnt that man. He never was. That man would never be here right now.
Kate relized that she had frozen in her spot and now Alex was watching her. Kate looked back at Alex feeling awkward by her presence on this private and personal moment. Alex sensing Kates discomfort, offered to wait outside to keep watch while Kate untied him. Alex left the room.
Kate turned back to Sawyer, a sad stare wishing she could take all his pain away. Walking over to him. Knowing that Sawyer most likely thought he deserved this in some sick way. Kate wiped the tears from her face and then placed her hand on his cheek, a gentle stroke. "What have they done to you?" Sawyer did not stir and Kate moved down to unbuckle the straps around his ankles and wrists. His arms fell limply to the side. She didnt know what kindof state he was in, but she could feel his pulse and could still feel the warmth from his skin as she held his hand. Kate stood up and sat lightly down in his lap. She buried her head in his neck sobbing lightly now. His shirt collar wiping away some of her tears. Sawyers breathing was shallow. She muttered into his shirt "Sawyer....I need you (sob)....you cant leave me because I need you (sob).....I love you!"
Sawyer was in a transient state thinking that he was in for another round of shock treatments when he heard the figure approach, but the touch was gentle, and his hands and legs were freed loose from the binds. A soothing voice whispered to him, coaxing him out of the dark catacombs of his mind ("I love you!") Sawyer thought this could be his angel who came to finally set him free. And his eyes opened to half moons. He looked down at the brown wavy lockes below him, her hand on his chest. Recognition setting in wondering if this was all still a dream. With a dry voice he spoke quietly...
"Kate?"
Kate looked up at him through cloudy eyes, a large grin suddenly forcing its way across her face, as one tear fell down her cheek. She let out a choked sob bursting out his name...
"Sawyer!"
Kate wrapped her arms around him squeezing him in a curiously strong bear hug. Sawyer gathered his strength to lift his arms up and encircle her waist. Kate finally let go and brought her hand up to his face thumb brushing across his stubble. She met his eyes, melancholy glare...
"I thought Id lost you"
Sawyers eyes searched Kates for an instant, still wondering if this was true, if this was real, or was he just imagining it?. His lips parted for an instant trying to take everything in not sure what to say, when Kate took the opportunity to brush her soft lips against his. She wanted to be careful not to hurt him and gently started to take him in. Sawyer let out a soft little groan as Kates mouth took over his own. Starting to get his feeling back. A sensation, not like the pain he had felt earlier but a light tingling. They started out slow a few little kisses scattered in and then they went deeper. He was awake now. Kate his own Princess Charming bringing him back to life.
Meanwhile Alex was waiting patiently outside the room. She saw them coming down the hall. She was so torn up inside about everything the strangers had told her. Was it true? Was her mother still alive and living on this very island? And were they good people? The only thing that convinced her to help them was Kates plea to her to see the man she loved. Alex was curious what this love thing was all about. But she knew he wouldnt be happy about her helping them, and ran off before they got to the room.
Kate had her arms around Sawyer again and she was just letting him hold her. So happy to be reunited with him she almost forgot about the plan. A voice from behind startled her...
"Well isnt this a Hallmark moment!"
Kate looked at the man standing across from her, (Zeke) her eyes filled with worry to fear before they turned hard, like a caged lioness. Sawyer took him into focus now as well, his brow becoming all furrowed.
Kate stood up helping Sawyer to his feet. He could barely stand straight. She put her arm around him and looked coldly at Zeke.
Zeke looked to his partner Clancy smiling...
"Guess we know who she loves now"
Sawyer looked at Kate in amazement by Zekes words. Love?
Kate wanting to take action, pulled the flare gun Sayid gave her out of the back of her pants, aiming it at Zeke...
"Let us go, and Ill let you live Tom!"
Zeke narrowed his eyes when Kate called him by his real name. A smirk...
"Go ahead Katherine! Im sure its not the first time you killed a man named Tom..."
Kates eyes glazed over with horror and in that instant of weakness, Clancy had crept up on her other side soundlessly. Sawyer finally snapping out of his thoughts noticed him and tried to warn Kate.
"Ka...."
But he was too late. The gun knocked from her hand fell to the floor. Zeke pulled a needle from his pocket. Kate blocked him from Sawyer ready to fight back if neccessary when she felt Sawyers body collapse behind her..
"Sawyer!"
And moments later, Kate was injected with the needle Zeke was carrying. Falling to the floor next to the man she loved.
Kate woke up from a nightmare. Reliving the day that she killed her best friend and the man she loved in a fatal car accident. If she hadnt run, Tom would still be alive right now. Devastated and tormented, Kate tore herself from these dark thoughts about her past.
Sitting up looking around her now, she realized that she had been placed in a bed. Another bunker room like she was in the night before with Jack and Sawyer but smaller. Where's Sawyer? Kate got up out of her bed. She noticed that her old clothes had been put back on her. How strange. And then turning around, startled she heard heavy breathing from the other room. Her room was ajoined to a separate room. Kate looked around frantically for a weapon, but could find none, save for her pillow. She grabbed it and scaled the sides of the room, slipping in undetected. She could hear muttering now and couldnt make out the words, but recognized the voice immediately. A small sense of releif washing over her, thankful he was still alive. Kate wasnt sure if Sawyer was alone or not. She hid the pillow behind her back to surprise anyone who was tormenting him. Finally stepping into the room, Kate found Sawyer lying on a bed much like the one she was on. She immediately went over to him and sat down on the side of the bed facing him. Sawyer was clearly still asleep, no doubt resting off the exhaustion of whatever they did to him. Nonetheless, Kate was incredibly releived to see him here with her, and seemingly still okay. Kate put her hand on his face, skimming his jaw, and then moving her hands up to his forehead and hairline.
If anything happened to this man. Kate didnt want to think about it anymore. She had already thought too much about what it would be like to lose Sawyer. Coming to the realization, that she would be empty without him. Kate knew that they both would always be the types to act independently and test eachother from time to time, which is why she loved him so much, but he made her feel good about herself. Nothing could make her let go now.
And then Kate saw it. At the edge of his bedside. A letter in a sealed envelope. It had her name written on it. Kate puzzled by this, took the letter and examined it in her hand. Turning it over, curiosity finally got the better of her and she tore it open. Unfolding the paper, she read the note...
Dearest Kate: By now you should have realized that we want the man sleeping at your side for our own reasons. We do not intend to kill him. And we do not intend to kill you, if you cooperate.
James is already on his way. We are cleaning his conscience and If you let us do the same to you, we are prepared to let you live. If you resist or try anything, you will die.
I suggest you take your last night as the woman you know yourself to be now and sleep on it. We will come for your answer in the morning.
Sweet Dreams Kate!
-Tom
Kate folded up the letter now, placing it in her pocket. A pit forming in the bottowm of her stomach. She was distraught by what these people did to Sawyer, although she had not yet noticed the effects externally, she knew he must have had internal trauma. And it scared her to think what they were capable of doing. Were they brainwashing him? Kate didnt know exactly what happened but she knew she didnt want to lose her memory, if thats what cleaning of the conscience meant. Good and bad, her experiences and memory made her who she was. Ironically the only man who ever saw thorough her cloak and dagger routine, was Sawyer. Kate looked down on Sawyers peaceful face now. How angelic he looked. She realized in that moment, that she wasnt going to go down without a fight. Kate only prayed that Jack and Sayid had been able to carry out their part of the plan.
Kate needed to clear her head, and if this was her last night as herself, she wanted to spend it with the only other man, who truly accepted her for who she really was. Kate lifted the blankets and crawled into bed next to Sawyer. She could feel the heat radiating off him. Closing her eyes for a moment, listening to him breathe, his heart beat. Just lying here next to him felt so natural. She wanted to do this when he was sick and Eko first brought him into the hatch, but she was afraid. Afraid of getting too attached. She was creeped out by her hallucination of Wayne. But Kate was not afraid now. She knew Sawyer was nothing like that man and, it had been hopeless to resist getting attached to him the moment they shared their first kiss. Kate smiled to herself thinking about it. And then she couldnt help but reach over him, moving her body closer and closer to his. Placing a smooth soft kiss on his lips. Wanting to relive that memory. The lips she was born to kiss, Kate continued. Sawyer began to stir, a hollow moan, and then he started kissing her back. Seeing Kate through half slits. Still groggy, but, Mmmm, she felt so good. Warm tongue darting into his mouth, Sawyers senses started to wake up. And he could feel, see, and taste Kate now. Still in disbeleif, this is Kate? This is really Kate? Hunger growing, he turned around to take Kate in his arms. Kissing her back.
Sawyer smiled now as their lips parted.
"Guess the only way to get you to kiss me is torture isnt it Freckles?"
Kate smiled satisfied, trying to be cute but wanting more, kissing him back, muttering through his mouth...
"Well its one way."
Sawyer smirked, speaking under her kisses..."Well..I wouldnt....do it(kiss).....for any other girl"
Kate smirked."You better not or Id clobber you" She kissed him again.
Sawyer smiled cheekily, "Is that so?" Kiss.
Kates eyes narrowed for an instant, "You better beleive it Tex."
Sawyer replied, "Well I know youve got a wicked right hook Freckles, and a nasty head butt....so guess Im inclined to agree." Smiling now, mischeviously.
Kate attacked him now with her eyes, pretending to be offended, but she couldnt fool him, His knowing blue eyes met hers...."Come here" Kate said, and she pulled him closer to her.
Sawyer had wanted this so badly for so long and it appeared that Kate wanted him just as much. So why was there a nagging question in the back of his head about how he got here and where the hell here was. Kate looked at him lustfully and he couldnt deny her. They had denied eachother far too much since they arrived on this island. Sawyer knew he had fallen hard for this woman. Now was his chance to give something back to her. Sawyer wrapped his arms more closely around Kate. He could feel her chest rising and falling against his body. Kate kissed him again this time his mouth folding into hers as she began to unbutton his shirt. Sawyer swept his arm up under her shirt, letting his hand rest in the small of her back. Kate began trailing kisses down his neck, collarbone, and torso. The button to his pants finally in site. Kate smiled. Kate came back up to kiss Sawyer, but before she did, slid her hand into his pants teasing him. A slight moan under her kiss. And then Sawyer pulled Kate up with him. He slid out of his shirt. Kate kicked off her pants and underwear and came back to straddel his lap. He unbottoned her shirt, pulling her tank top over her head. Kate began working on his pants now, as Sawyer undid her bra, freeing her completely at last. He kissed her neck and collar bone trailing down to her breasts. Kate felt so liberated. Like she could do anything at this very moment. Breathing heavier. She pushed Sawyer back down on the bed and unzipped his pants, pulling them off along with his boxers in one full swoop.
Sawyer smiled up at her mesmerized by her beautiful and glowing silouette. Her aura radiating off her skin. Never before feeling this kind of passion, desire, and need for a woman. Sawyer brushed his hands along the side of her breasts, sending a tingling sensation thorough her body, sliding them down finally to rest on her hips. Kate bent down to kiss him and then she grazed down below. Kate wanted him so badly. Sawyer, used to being in control, had lost all of it the moment she beckoned him to come to her. He was powerless under her spell. Not being able to hold it anymore, Kate lowered herself down onto him. Eye locking with eye. The sudden contact was electric and Kate felt her whole body quiver. She could see into his eyes like windows into his soul, and Sawyer fell into the abyss of her black dialated pupils. Never wanting to come out. They moved together in rhythym--an out of body experience as the air became fire and fire turned into water. Two broken halves, finally making one whole. She took all his pain away. Sawyer had never let a woman get this close to him before. It was so scary and thrilling at the same time. To see into her eyes as she did his. Sawyer flipped Kate over wanting to take away her pain too.
Kate felt such an intense connection with Sawyer now. She knew she had the kindof self sacrificing, truest of true love for him, and that made this experience all the more meaningful for her. Explosions coursed through her body in tiny ripples, seeing purples and golds and greens. When she finally came off the erotic high she was feeling at the moment, Sawyer collapsed down beside her, sharing the same experience. Skin balmy just like hers. A tender kiss. Breathless. Smiling now.
"Were definately gonna have to do that again Freckles."
Kate smiled blushing ever so slightly. And then she enveloped him wrapping her body around his. Sawyer placed his arm around her shoulders and she looked up at him, smiling. She could really get used to this. Feeling a warmth and sense of peace lying here next to him. Never wanting this feeling to stop. And then like a nagging little pest, she recalled the letter. Grin turning straight. Kate remembered that this could be the end for her. Sawyer instantly knew something was wrong when Kate didnt reply. He put his finger under her chin, bringing her face up to look at him.
"What is it Freckles?"
Kate struggled to make eye contact with him. And when she finally did she forced a small smile, pushing her darker thoughts back, wanting to just think about being here with him, in the moment.
"Nothings wrong Sawyer...Im up for more whenever you are." She pulled herself up to plant another long lingering kiss on his lips.
Sawyer kissed her back, but he felt that she was keeping something from him. He wasnt sure if he should persist or let it or just let it go, not wanting to ruin the moment, but he couldnt help but care about what was bothering Kate. Terrible thoughts ran through his mind. Whatever it was, he would have to deal with it.
Sawyer pulled away, meeting her eyes now...
"Kate! What is it? I know somethings wrong...I mean, this isnt exactly the place I wanted to do this with you, not that it wasnt mindblowing, but I cant even remember how I got here in the first place."
Kate wanted to tell him so badly, but she didnt want to burden him and then realization crossed her face as she heard his last sentance. Worried now....
"What? (Repeating his words) You cant remember how you got here? (searching his eyes now, a pause) What do you remember?"
Sawyer met Kates gaze his concerned look now mirroring her own. Thinking to himself, trying to go back in his mind, puzzled...
"How did you get here anyway Freckles? Wheres Mike and Jin? What happened to the raft?"
Kate looked at Sawyer, eyes glazing over. Closing them breifly. Thinking to herself...
When Jack and Sayid left Kate and Alex, Jack was apprehensive to separate from the group, but Sayid pointed out to him that time was a valueable commodity here, and not one they had much of. Jack decided that Sayid was right and went against his better judgements to stop Kate and Alex from leaving them. Jack followed Sayid deeper into the hatch.
As they headed towards the center looking for a power source or main room, Jack wondered why they had dressed in these rags again. Scaling the walls and hiding from sound, he learned that their disguises would finally come in useful when they encountered a large chain gang of people coming down one of the main hallways. Jack and Sayid covertly joined the group at the tail. Going unnoticed when they turned off in their own direction into a large room with television monitors.
Sayid hit the large button in the center of the control panel and a number of monitors lit up. It was a surveilance room. From here they could see much of the hatch. Most of it was just empty hallways and rooms, but then Sayid noticed a small figure standing outside one of the dimly lit hallways. Sayid exclaimed...
"It's Alex!"
Just then on the camera Alex straigtened up. Someone was coming down the hallway but from their angle they couldnt tell who it was. Alex ducked away quickly turning back into another hallway. Jack watching the screen closely now too asked...
"Where's Kate?"
Sayid continued to watch as two men approached. Jack was getting worried now, they finally came into view and entered the room, Jack verified...
"Thats Tom and his henchman Clancy....(realization) She left Kate alone? (pausing for a second) Sayid, we have to find Kate..."
Sayid looked at Jack nodding his head.
"Yes Jack....we do...But we also have to take care of our part of the plan....We already know that they wont hurt her. They've had her in custody twice and she's barely come out with a scratch...So for now, we will just have to trust that Kate and Sawyer will survive without us for a little while...(looking Jack in the eye) They have eachother..."
Jack flinched at Sayids last comment. And every fiber of his being wanted to go after them, but he knew Sayid was right. Still putting his foot down. A tiny rage of his own building up, he demanded...
It was raining and Sawyer approached Duckett back by the dumpsters. "Hey Sawyer!" he shouted. And Duckett looked back at him. He aimed his gun and BANG, the loud noise resounded inside his head. He got closer to the him " I got a letter for you." Duckett clearly in pain collapsed at the side of the dumpster. Sawyer took out the letter and was confused when instead of a letter, he held a picture of Kate in his hand. Sawyer looked at Duckett again, who was waiting for him to speak. Sawyer didnt need the letter, he knew the words by heart, he was trapped in this recurring dream, one he knew well. Sawyer continued and started to recite... "Dear Mr. Sawyer." The man looked at him confused, " Who?" Sawyer equally puzzled confirmed with him, "You used to go by the name of Sawyer" He asked again" What are you talkin' about?" *barly breathing* Sawyer began to tremble *scared look* Duckett grinned weakly, "You don't know what you're doing, do you son?" The rain fell harder and his face became blurry. As Sawyer began to regain his focus again the mans face flashed back and forth from Ducketts to the one he had seen here. 'That Man' Who was he? Sawyer thought to himself. And then the man spoke to him, blood pouring from the wound in his chest, evil grin..."Dont worry James, It'll come back around."
(Present)
Sawyers eyes shot open and he let out a gasp before he realized his surroundings. Trying to pull himself together. Still breathing heavy he noticed the figure lying next to him. It was Kate. Her arm was loosely slung over his chest, long brown locks covering her face which was buried in the small space between his neck and shoulder. She looked radiant. Sawyer closed his eyes recollecting the events of the evening. Despite the growing tension between them, they took comfort in eachother, and Kate convinced him that any thing that had to be straightened out could wait till morning. They made love all night. Sawyer smiled to himself remembering how good Kate felt. Wondering if this was something real or was she just here with him because she was worried and confused. She sure as hell didnt seem confused last night. He smirked to himself and his grin faltered as he remembered how he had lost complete control with Kate. Sawyer realized the magnitude of the situation, worried that what he felt was indeed more than just a conquest for him. It gave him an uneasy feeling now, like he actually had something to lose instead of gain. Sawyer pushed the questioning thoughts out of his head and looked to the room around him. They werent back at the beach, they werent at the caves, where the hell were they? These others who took Walt had him captive. Where was Mike and Jin? Sawyer didnt like this scenario at all. As good as last night was, he had to get himself and Kate out of here. They werent safe.
Jack and Sayid watched the monitors a little longer. The screens kept turning on and off switching to new locations, but there was no Alex. Jack played around with the control panel and hit rewind on one of the tapes where the room was now empty. He pressed play. Sawyer was seated in a chair and then Kate was in the room. Jack leaned in closer to watch. Sayid had noticed the tape now too. Then Kate climbed on Sawyer and they were kissing. Jack couldnt stand it anymore. He reached to turn the tape off when Sayid grabbed his arm...."Wait" Sayid looked closer at the screen now. He saw a glowing tube protruding from the side of the wall. It was connected to chairs power panel. Jack looked at Sayid curious now, "What? What do you see?" Sayid pointed to the small tube on the screen.
"See that small tube?"
Jack looked closer and nodded, "Yeah, whats that got to do with anything?"
Sayid continued..."That tube contains Uranium."
Jack repeated his words "Uranium, as in the explosive material?"
Sayid nodded. "Exactly...They are using radioactive Uranium to power the electric chair, and possibly even this entire facility....(he paused for a minute) You saw the flash when we were outside the other day right?"
Jack nodded his head, understanding what Sayid was getting at...
"Your saying that was radiation?"
Sayid looked back at the screen now studying it. Kate and Sawyer still going hot and heavy. Jack not wanting to look back. Sayid returning his gaze...
"Yes Jack, I beleive it was."
Sayid was thinking over it all in his head. Tom and Clancy were in the room now with Sawyer and Kate. Sayid started thinking of these people as the enemy. Narrowing his eyes, looking back at Jack...
"You see, that short exposure we saw yesterday was harmless, but you mix uranium with sulfur and oxygen and you've got yourself a pretty dangerous and explosive combination. And we have access to the sulfur."
Jack swallowed hard trying to remain calm during this whole time. Wondering if Sayid had gone off the deepend.
"Are you suggesting what I think your suggesting Sayid? That we go get the dynamite and blow up this place."
Sayid found himself grinning at Jack despite the danger elements involved and the look of shock in his eyes. He and Kate had been on the same page the whole time and now Jack was finally catching up to them.
"Precisely Jack."
Jack shook his head.
"Do you have any idea how dangerous that could be, if that backfired, we could all...."
Sayid cut him off...
"I know exactly how dangerous it is Jack and I also know what Im doing. If we place the dynamite in the proper locations this facility will be the only target we destroy."
Jack starting to feel helpless again, exclaimed angrily...
"Were not doing anything till we get Sawyer and Kate back"
Sayid nodded in agreement. Then they both looked at the monitor as Sawyer fell to the ground and then Kate...Jack concerned started to leave to find Sawyer and Kate. Sayid grabbed his arm, and demanded...
"Alex first! (Jack shook his head in disagreement) That tape is not the present Jack...We must find Alex!"
Jack sighed loudly. He didnt like this, not one bit. Looking back at Sayid, upset for having his arm twisted like this, he replied...
Sawyer looked over at Kate in the bed. She was so beautiful and apparently incredibly tired from the all night sex marathon. Sawyer kissed her on the cheek before he slipped out of the bed. Smirking at her bewitching effect on him. Kate stirred briefly but then buried her head in his pillow sprawling out across the entire bed now. Sawyer smiled as he got dressed. And then reality set in. He had to get them out of here. Sawyer started to look around the room for anything useful that could tell him where they were. He tried the door, but it was locked from the outside. Dammit! Sawyer thought. He turned his attentions to any useful weapons, now picking up Kates clothing from the floor and placing it on the chair to see if he could use anything underneath, when a white envelope slid out of her back jean pocket. Sawyer set down her clothing and picked up the envelope. It had her name written on the outside and it had been opened. Sawyer curious, unfolded it and read the contents...
Sawyer had to sit down after reading it. Looking over at Kates peaceful sleeping body. He couldnt let them do that to her. Pits falling into his stomach as he realized that this is what they had been doing to him. Over his dead body was he gonna let those men hurt Kate. If he couldnt get them out of there then he would have to make them think that Kate wasnt worth keeping. But how was he going to do that? What did they want from her? What did they want from him? Kate must have come for him. They didnt originally want her then. Sawyer put two and two together. They want her cause she wants me...I have to make her not want me then. I have to push her away.
Kate stirred pulling the sheets up to cover her body as she suddenly felt a chill. Sawyer quickly crammed the note back in her jean pocket a dreaded look as his gaze fell back on Kate. Her eyes opened and she looked up at Sawyer now, a small smile....
"What are you doing with my pants" Kate asked Sawyer after she caught him out of the corner of her eye fidgeting with them..maybe pulling on the button perhaps? or the zipper? But he dropped them on the chair just as quickly looking uncomfortably back at Kate. Answering her. "Nothin, I was just cleaning up."
Kate sat up in the bed, sheet draped around her now. Looking at him with a hint of suspicion. She stood up and walked right to Sawyer, looking like a damn sorority girl as she waltzed over. Only mere inches away from him now. Sawyer swallowed hard as Kate got closer. She replied softly, breathing him in. "So it must be the maids day off then?" A mischevious smile. Her eyes raised to meet his now. A wave of familiarity passed over him with her words, but then it was gone. Sawyer looked down at Kate, Damn she looked hot in that thing. Of all the bloody times to grow a conscience, he had to pick now. He looked away and closed his eyes breifly before opening them again, glancing back down at Kate, a mixture of worry and torment clouded his face. He couldnt let her think he was worth being here for. Kate saw that he was trying to keep something from her. She held her sheets together covering up with one hand and placed her other hand on his wrist. Starting to become concerned. Locking eyes with his...
"Sawyer, what is it?"
Sawyer shook his head.
"Nothin (He pulled his wrist from her hand, trying to muster a cold stare, struggling to look back at Kate now, pausing as he pretended not to care)....Maybe you should go on and get dressed Freckles, they are bound to be here for us any time."
Kate didnt like Sawyers tone. It wasnt the reaction she would have expected from him. Not after last night. Something wasnt right. Wondering what it was about she dug a little deeper, her voice stern now.
"Im not dressing anything till I find out why your acting this way!" Kate glared at Sawyer.
Sawyer smirked. If there was one part he knew how to play well, it was the part of the ass. He narrowed his eyes, a slight glint.
"Suit yourself. (He looked down at her nonchalantly, pretending not to notice her growing distress, a smug look) Guess we could have another go if thats what your asking for."
Sawyer flashed a sly smile and Kate started to get flustered. Upset that he would treat her with such disrespect after everything. Anger rising, she turned away from him ready to storm off into the bathroom when she realized that he had been acting strange since she woke up. Wondering if it was the memory thing or the drugs they had him on. She turned back to him and decided to try again...
"Nice try, but Im not falling for your little push away and put up your guard routine. (She got in his face) Whats bothering you???"
Sawyer started to get annoyed now because Kate wasnt going for it. He had no choice but to fire back with the only ammo he had, voice slightly raised...
"You wanna talk about whats bothering me Sweetheart? Well howabout getting tortured for starters. Or not knowing where the hell we are..Or how you got here...Or maybe how you poisoned Mike to get a spot on the raft....Or when you let everyone beleive I was the prisoner when you really were...Maybe thats the kind of person you are? ( He realized he didnt mean that last part, but it was too late to back out now, his voice trailing off, quieter he continued..) or when you never stuck around to say adios!"
A wave of guilt wash over Kates face remembering how ruthless she had actually been with him back then. It was all to protect herself using the only means she knew how--deceipt. She looked at Sawyer through sad eyes. Realizing that the last few weeks of her tending and caring for him had escaped his memory. She stepped towards him once more and placed her hand on his cheek. Sawyer flinched and stiffened slightly, but as she continued to stroke his face he felt his tension fade away once more. Looking down at her now, Kate spoke...
"Your right Sawyer, maybe we dont have a chance..maybe we do...who knows, a tiger doesnt change his stripes right? We can only hope..."
Sawyer had a sudden flash in his mind. He was sitting by a campfire polishing a large rifle with Kate standing across from him, looking hurt and betrayed.
Kate noticed the long pause, he was somewhere else, and she had to find out where that was. Kate brought her hand down now and met Sawyers gaze..."Sawyer....what is it?"
That memory was starting to come back to him now...
"The gun....I had the guns?"
Kate smiled a wavered smile, not liking the memory of her own at that time because she didnt realize he had the power to hurt her the way he did back then, but nonetheless releived that he was starting to remember. She confirmed softly...
"Yes Sawyer...you fooled us all."
Sawyer looked down at Kate now. He recalled that he had hurt her when he took the guns. He didnt want to, but he had to get his clarity of mind back at the time. Yet here he was confused as ever about what did or did not happen and things couldnt be more certain about how he felt for Kate. And that was terrifying to him.
"How long has it been? Since Ive been here? Since we returned from the raft?"
Kate flinched not knowing how to approach this. If it would be too much for his mind to handle. She decided to keep her answer simple
"You've been back for almost 3 weeks Sawyer...You came to us half dead with a bullet wound in your shoulder, and weve been here for 3 days now. They've had you hostage the whole time. Jack and I were let go, but I came back for you, and now here we are...."
Sawyer reached up to his shoulder and touched where the bullet hole was. He remembered getting shot. That was the last thing he remembered before the blackness. Feeling the smooth skin now. It had completely healed, leaving only a scar behind. He muttered "all be damned." Looking back at Kate, studying her face, pausing for a minute, wondering now what made her come back for him.
Kate looked up at him through tormented eyes, and Sawyers face softened tucking a strand of loose hair back behind her ear, bringing his hand back down to caress her face. He couldnt help it. It was like a magnetic attraction he felt for Kate like a moth to a flame. Kates heart started beating faster and she could feel her face flush. Sawyer bent down and kissed her lips. Kate feeling apprehensive herself, but then finding that familiar place where she was most at home returned his advance, kissing him back.
When they finally parted Sawyer spoke...
"Im gonna get you out of here."
Kates lips curved into a partial smile. Countering him..
"Not if I get you out first."
And then she crushed her lips down on his. Both of them lost in the moment. Sawyers mind all a jumble now of thoughts, memories, and ideas...
Jack and Sayid had left the surveilance room and headed down towards quadrant D, the place where Alex was last seen on the monitors. They had no idea where she could have gone, but as they arrived at the room with the chair, they found it vacant. Sayid went to the power source, the green neon tube, and examined it closer. Jack went up to him and studied the object himself. Jack questioned Sayid...
"So you know for sure that this is Uranium? That its radioactive?"
Sayid nodded his head pointing out a few identifying traits of the compound.
"See the way it expands and contracts with the vibration?"
Jack nodded his head. Sayid continued...
"It uses Oxygen to expand....If this was exposed to pure oxygen, or taken out of that tube in here, the entire facility would be contaminated."
Jack shook his head.
"I still think this is risky Sayid, what if it doesnt work, what if they are immune, what if the radiation spreads to the whole island?"
Sayid nodded his head.
"Thats what the lead doors are for. You remember then entrance way and the doors. When I touched it, some of it rubbed off on my hands. Lead is a very soft metal and one that protects against radiation. You of all people should know. Lead is used in the x-ray room. It will provide a protective barrier so that the uranium can not get out."
Jack continued to drill Sayid.."but what about us. If the explosion somehow damaged the doors?"
Sayid nodded his head...
"Thats what our hatch magnet is for. A magnet of that size would repel a magnetic substance like Uranium. They use magnets to control the substance. The door on our hatch read Quarantine. It was to protect the people inside. Our side of the island is safe. Its their side that is unstable. Which in my opinion is why they have been so guarded. If this got out that they could be destroyed, its all over for them."
Jack looked sternly at Sayid and spoke quietly,
"This plan better work Sayid!" Sayid started to nod and had his mouth partially open, just about to give Jack a response when...they heard scuffeling outside the room. Sayid whispered to Jack instructions on what to do to their perpetrator in the hallway should they run into one another. Jack not listening to Sayids instructions glanced back at the man before he stepped forward into the hallway, leaning up against the doorjam trying to be as flat as possible. The person had their back turned to him, but Jack lunged out into the hallway and grabbed them. He quickly restrained their arms with one hand and put his other hand over the mouth. A muffled scream as she was pulled back into the room. Jack recognized her immediately as she was shoved down into the electric chair. "Alex!" There was no need to restrain the girl. She was powerless against them now looking back at Sayid and Jack terrified. Sayid brought out his gun and pointed it at her, demanding..."Tell us where our friends are!!!"
Kate had just been coaxed to take shower by Sawyer. He couldnt think straight with her here. Too many jumbled thoughts and memories swimming around inside his head. He needed to focus. Releived to hear the shower nozzle turn he sat down in the chair. Trying come up with another idea for their next plan of action. Sawyer stood up on guard immediately when he noticed the door handle click and then turn, opening the door. Zeke was there again and this time he brought his friend. 'The man' Sawyer had dreamed about. The man he had seen the day earlier. His name was on the tip of his tongue and Sawyer was a horses hair away from remembering where he knew this person from. Zeke however, broke his chain of thought and spoke, smiling slyly...
"Well James, guess you didnt have any trouble resisting temptation last night, didja?"
Sawyer narrowed his eyes wishing he could pummel the large man into the ground. He was thinking of just plowing through them and making a break for it, but he couldnt leave Kate behind. There had to be some other way. Zeke continued smirking now...
"Dont worry, we didnt stay up and watch all night, we gotta sleep too, but that was quite the show."
Sawyer went to lunge at Zeke when the other man intervened and held Sawyer back. Looking to Zeke now...
"Thats enough Tom, (looking back at Sawyer, a sly grin) Lets just get down to business shall we?"
Sawyer snorted. Looking at the man challengingly, sarcastic...
"And you are??? (Sawyer raised his eybrows and paused for a second) Other # 22?" (a smirk)
The man returned his grin with an equally sly smile.
"Not exactly James, Im surprised you havent remembered who I am actually. Ive known you since you were 6 years old."
Sawyer didnt like this feeling--not one bit. He definately felt like this person was a threat and if he still had his gun on him he would have tried to get a round out on him. This eerie feeling was too much for Sawyer to handle. He especially didnt like people bringing up his past or his name and this man apparently knew him. It was a subject that had remained closeted for many years now. The man continued...
"First time I saw you you were at a church picnic. Your mama was hollering after you cause you were lifting up the girls skirts. They were all hitting you back and she had to come an rescue you."
Sawyer narrowed his eyes and watched the older man reminisce, thinking he must be either a nut case or some psycho. The man went on..
"I was there with my girlfriend and your daddy came late as usual. He never did make it on time to those things. (there was a small fire burning in Sawyers eyes.) I had just been relocated, but your daddy was kind enough to take me under his wing and show me around--introduce me to everyone."
Sawyer glared at him. And fired back sarcastically...
"Well Johnny Appleseed, guess good ol James Sr. was good for something. (Sawyer stepped up and got in his face now in a threatening tone he continued) Does your little trip down memory lane have a point???"
The man just smiled...
"You look just like him you know. (Rage filled Sawyers eyes, he wanted to tear this mans heart out, it hurt too much now, he had crossed that line a long time ago. The man paused and let Sawyer take in his last stabbing words before he went on.) I was with your daddy that day, told him she wasnt worth the trouble she had caused him, told him to leave her... the day he took his life and your mothers."
Sawyer couldnt control himself now, his hand went for the mans throat. Squeezing him tightly, hating him for making him remember that day and for taking him back to that time, that moment. The day that was forever burned in his mind. The day that he lost his parents and his life as he knew it forever. Through clenched jaw, Sawyer demanded from him....
"Who are you???"
The man coughed and choked and Zeke stepped in to intervene now. Pulling on Sawyers arm. Reaching in his vest for the needle. It was a struggle between all 3 men. Sawyer could barely hear the gasp at the back of the room, and then the voice became more clear...
"Daddy?"
Sawyer let go of him as Kate approached them in disbeleif, her eyes locked with the man Sawyers hands were on...it was her father, Sam Austen.
